    5:30AM workout! Don't look at it as paying a price for good health, you enjoy paying the price for good health! You actually pay the price for poor health, with diabetes & high blood pressure. Thanks for the video, inspired me.

    I also gained around 30lb in medical school and residency. I was a prediabetic in my last year of residency. Was able to lose all of the weight and get in the best shape of my life over the course of 1-2 years after residency. I now have a home gym-so all excuses are off the table despite a busy schedule. Take care of yourself so that you may be able to take care of others. Shalom.

    It seems that the absolutely punishing schedules of a medical residency program are contributing to doctors, nurses, and surgeons being more likely to suffer these types of health effects. It doesn’t bode well for anyone that our medical professionals feel that they don’t have time to take care of themselves. Good on you Dr. Webb for taking care of yourself. That gym is fantastic, and I hope you are loving getting stronger!

    Recently graduated from nursing school with my BSN and my health definitely took a toll while in school. I was also diagnosed with hypertension and prediabetic. I know the importance of taking care of the chronic disease earlier as an African American. Stay consistent, we got this ✊🏾

    Going through the same thing Dr. Webb. First semester of medical school done and I’ve put in about 30 pounds. Saw the doctor over Christmas and my blood pressure was elevated and so were my sugars. It’s been a month of getting on weight watchers and watching what I eat and reliably exercising and I’ve lost 15 pounds. It feels good to have my health back on track! 😊

    No worries brother! Diet and exercise do wonders. If you do need medicines in addition don't worry. Genetics play a huge role especially as we get older. Great to see you take this stuff seriously though. You're setting a great example for both your family and patients!

    Thanks doc…I also have an elevated blood pressure, and now that I don’t have to have two jobs and go to school, I’m doing all I can to lose weight and to actively find ways to de stress. While the news is scary, I appreciate you sharing this with us. It’s nice to feel that others are with us in our struggles. Let’s kick this thing to the curb!!       True - when I was diagnosed as diabetic there is some anxiety but also some shame if you know you've let yourself go. I've lost 57 pounds the last two years and everything is back in the normal range so if you put in the work the results should show!
      I do appreciate the Doc giving us this glimpse as I think many of us feel like doctors can be these impersonal robots who never have health issues...

    I have PCOS, insulin resistant and was pre-diabetic and taking metformin, the side effects from metformin was my wake up call to change my life. I’m down 40lbs and off the medication, feeling so much better now, getting labs done to see if I have erased the pre-diabetes. Health is wealth, I feel rich beyond measure now that I’m getting my health in order. Gaining a better quality of life and peace of mind from this, I know you will too

    Love love love this episode. I’ve been a life long exerciser. Still have cholesterol problems. Finally changed to trying to be 80% compliant with the Mediterranean diet. Blood work next week! Consistency is key with working out. Working out first thing in the morning is the BEST HABIT you can acquire. You get it done before your day gets off-track! Btw: I get er done at 3am tobe on the job at 5. In the words of my PC Dr…keep up the STRONG WORK!

    Thanks for the video, and for your honesty Dr. Webb!! I am trying to get back to the gym as well, and the struggle is real!!! Keep up the good work, I hope to be doing the same in a week or so (just not at 530 am)! I work as a nurse and am absolutely exhausted by the end of my shift, and I realize a lot of it is my crappy diet and sedentary life style on my days off, and have a second job is not helping (the second job is going bye bye in another month or two!! We can get this done!

    Way to make the change. I faced similar issues. Biggest impact was changing diet. Working out is great, but your can't out-exercise a bad diet.

    Hey what's up Dr. Webb and Happy New Year! Thanks for this very inspiring video! I too struggle with HBP but it's under control with meds and I had weight loss surgery 2 years ago as I was over 550 lbs and I have since lost 220 lbs and counting so I understand fully on how important it is to really try to focus on your health because it's our greatest asset.     Great video. I do a lot of those movements on the Peloton platform. For me learning to do something everyday was a game changer even if it’s just stretching or low intensity cardio. You are right consistency is key and with the discipline you already have from practicing medicine anything is possible for you if you apply it to this area as well. It doesn’t take long to feel the improvement from improved health but it does take a little longer to see it. You are doing great. 👍🏾

    Nurse practitioner here, struggling with the same! Pre-DM, hypertension and high cholesterol.
    I’ve joined the 5 am club, waking up earlier, exercising before work and eating less overall but especially less salt, refined sugars and carbs
    We can do this!

    I feel this, I am in college getting a degree in mathematics -- it has definitely taken a toll on me physically with weight gain, mental health, etc. I just found out I have blood sugar readings in the prediabetic range so I have been watching what I am eating and getting physical activity in daily -- 2024 will be the year I get this controlled, we got this!

    Always been a healthy in shape guy with weightlifting and combat training. Med school is making it harder and harder. Went from 5-6 times a week, to 3…4 if im lucky. And im only a second year in a relationship with no kids. Can’t imagine third year or even residency with a family. Kudos to you doc and enjoy the journey as always.

    As a medical student myself, I religiously track health metrics such as HRV using my Garmin. I would highly recommend tracking it yourself as a measure of stress and well-being. I can also vouch that I feel better, study better and perform better when I am in a training cycle than when I am not. I definitely intend to keep it up throughout my career.

    I know that feeling my brother. I have found Celtic salt to be beneficial as well as an olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and cayenne pepper mixture. Since incorporating this in my everyday routine I haven’t been on blood pressure meds.

    Dr. Webb, hang in there. Small changes over time in diet and activity can make all the difference when it comes to pre-diabetes, BP, and cholesterol. Glad you're being proactive while you are young, so that you can avoid some of the issues in the future.     Nice work Doc I somehow started watching you and your story is quite nice Starting out from the bottom is perhaps the best way to start. We work hard to make it in our jobs and businesses and sometimes we forget about our health i live in Toronto run a business but give priority now to exercise and a healthy diet at my peak weight i was 259 i am now 189 im 55 i jog skip and do cold plunges and sauna regularly i was at my docs two days ago and my bloodwork was really good as for blood pressure i cant beleive my numbers were 116 over 67 and bpm 62 you can have a succesful business and still be healthy good luck on your journey and you are an inspiration to many thank you

    Dr Webb. I also had to make some lifestyle changes. The pandemic raised a lot of concerns for me about western medicine. I started bringing my lunch to work. I exercise almost daily. I get outdoors. I feel so much better in almost every way. You can do it.

    Best thing about growing up knowing how to cook is that even when I was in grad school. I had quality home meals. I couldn't stand eating out cause it was so cost ineffective. I could cook and feed myself 3x a day for a week with $70-100 worth of groceries.

    Medical school and residency especially surgical residency (as that's what I know) can be a very unhealthy period in one's life. There's barely much time left to look after one's self by the time you have met your duties and responsibilities. You end up eating and drinking whatever you can find. So much carbonated and energy drinks just for that rush of sugar or caffeine so you can go again. Then there's the significant lack of sleep. Back to back all nighters. All this adds up over time.
    It's so good you were able to spot the health issues early and make changes.

    Good start to the new year! It's a lot of work to stay consistent and keep the progress going. Maybe a personal trainer will be the edge you need.

    Health while being a student isnt talked about enough. Last semester i was taking my 2nd semester RN program. Being type 1 diabetic, i had two dangerous low blood sugar incident. One time in my bedroom my sugar dropped to 19. My roommate saved that morning. A few weeks later the same thing happened at the gyms bathroom. Fire fighters injected me to dextrose when they saw my diabetic tattoo.

    Neurorads here, employee non partner track. If you’re done with loans, built up a nest egg, it could be beneficial at least to look at a job with a better schedule, or negotiate a better schedule. You’re obviously financially careful and savvy, so if you’re at that point, the economic freedom can buy a better schedule. Easier said than done for us though!! Reminds my 36 year old ass to get a pcp. Love the content btw, been following your journey alongside mine for a few years.

    the truth is all the physicians who are also youtube creators are searching for something that their job does not give them. Creativity is one of them. Medicine can be very mono and depressing I feel bad for all physicians, they sacrifice their lives not just by working too much but also being in field that lacks any creativity and art in it. We as humans need this, that's why we pay so much for painting and that's why one of our favourite things is listening to music.

    I go at 5am which means I wake up at 3:55 am to take care of my pups and get out the house so I can make it there at 5 when the doors open…I clock in to work at 6:45am so I spend about 45 min working out, shower and get dressed and drive. Working out in the morning makes me feel great for the start of my day and when I clock out, I am free for the rest of the day. Surgeries can last all day and the last thing I want to do after standing all day, is go to the gym. lol!!! Great job on getting it done for you.

    Interested to hear what your diet looks like now, as someone who is in relatively good shape (BMI of 22 and can do 3000 steps on a stair master in 30 mins) but still has high BP.

    Love your content! If your interested in medical/sports physiology, Inigo San Millan - coach of a two time Tour de France rider, and he is also a scientist in Colorado has some great content on the role of mitochondria and lactate in training and connection to pre-diabetes. Resting lactate is a great metric to track and can be elevated in pre-diabetes.

    Yeah man also had constant 148/98 blood pressure for years and never gave any concerns until blurry vision, constant migraines and aggressive behavior kicked in, reduced salt intake, exercise and pills helped! It is a silent killer please everyone check you blood pressure and act on it!
