  • In this video, Dr. Webb reacts to Dr Death - a former Texas-based neurosurgeon, maimed dozens of his victims and killed at least two. In 2017, Christopher Duntsch, aka Dr. Death, was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty on multiple charges and is currently serving time in prison only to be eligible for parole in 2045. For two years, dozens of patients Duntsch operated on suffered injuries or impairments - some victims were paralyzed, while others suffered severe nerve damage and had to endure chronic pain. One of his friends and patients underwent spinal surgery only to return from the procedure with a broken vertebral artery.

It was crazy hearing the chair of neurosurgery at my home institution say some surgeons hes worked with shouldnt be allowed to peel oranges.
I'd be curious to see your reactions on some episodes where they talk specifically about some of the injuries and "errors" that happened in the surgeries. 100 cases or not in residency, some things seemed like things first year medical students would know not to do.

Definitely distorts the view of Neurosurgery/Neurosurgeons. I’ve been fortunate to have 2 very different but very good neurosurgeons in my life. Lots of spine surgery can be mentally draining on a patient but good surgeons do help. Lots of patients fail to understand that doctors aren’t magicians or miracle workers. The best ones understand and have empathy for their patients. If you have to go through any type of surgery your first duty as the patient is to find a surgeon who you trust.

Scary stuff! I’ve been really lucky to have only had good experiences with the ortho surgeon I used to see for my scoliosis as a kid. He was an older man named Dr Zimbler from Boston Children’s. He was so kind, and never even had to operate on me! We did PT and bracing and that prevented me from needing surgery which was exactly what I had hoped for. My mom told me recently she saw he had passed away. Really grateful for all the good docs out there, definitely need some systemic changes to prevent bad ones from harming people. I’d imagine it’s also tough because there’s a shortage and need drives desperation :(

I was curious about MD/PhD combos and this doctor popped up. Dutchess worked under his PhD for a long period after school but then took up medical surgical practice as he was deep in debt and surgery paid more. The wiki article on this guy is as frustrating as it is fascinating. Hospitals passed him off to other hospitals to get rid of him.

The awful thing is that while this case made headlines, this has been happening for years. 20+ years ago, some insurance system were set up differently. In some cases, patients were not allowed to pick their surgeons, they were assigned one and had no choice. If that surgeon had the contract, that was your surgeon. When it was like that, really poor surgeons were allowed to butcher one patient after another, and still practice, because they held the all-mighty contract. Mine forgot to tighten the pedicle screws, which gradually backed out into the nerves, causing permanent nerve damage, and a failed fusion. When I refused to allow him to hack into me again, I filed extensive paperwork to have a second opinion. The 2nd opinion neurosurgeon was shocked at how archaic the surgical methods the bad surgeon had used were. I then found out that the reason the bad surgeon was still in business was because he had a federal contract. He did all the neurosurgery for Pelican Bay Prison, so some big industry insurance carriers had given him their surgery contract as well. That is just how it was set up, patients received terrible care and there was nothing we could do about it. I was in my early 20’s, that surgeon disabled me for life, and there was literally nothing I could do about it. The standard in my state for medical malpractice at that time was either proving malicious intent or willful negligence. Either are incredibly difficult to prove and incompetence did not meet either standard. He lost his license a few years later, but the damage to me was already done. I have lived in various levels of a nightmare since then. I had to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, trying to maintain some semblance of peace and quality of life. There’s nothing else I could do and the terrible surgeon was allowed to continue being terrible for multiple years after he botched my surgery. He faced zero consequences for the substantial harm he caused me and to my future. He permanently disabled me and my insurance company paid him to do it. He received over a half a million dollars for my surgery alone, which is the equivalent of a cool million in 2024.

Sure am glad Dr. Death didn't do my spinal fusion surgery.... Pretty scary! I totally agree that there were failures on many levels that allowed this surgeon to continue and affect so many people in a terrible way.... Wonder how much money that surgeon cost the hospital in malpractice lawsuits....

I work with spine suregons for a living. Thankfully, almost all have been outstanding. None have been particularly dangerous; however, some are more technically skilled than others. The vast majority give patients realistic expectations about what results to expect, communicate well with the entire OR staff, and recognize immediately when a change in the surgical plan is necessary to maximize patient safety. This Dr. Death is such an outlier. Think of it this way: how many docs are given life in prison because of their gross incompetence and nefarious behavior? Makes an interesting TV series but is very far from the norm.

This is very sad. Wish doctors would also look into increased all cause mortality for last 2 years. Primarily affecting younger people in countries with lots of safe and effective going on. There must be some curiosity? Maybe there is curiosity but no courage. Wish doctors would get back to critical thinking, own their profession and truly advocate for their pts.
