    I was born in Kosovo. I moved to Sweden as a child. I'm lucky that we spoke albanian at home with my parents. With my siblings we talked both albanian and swedish. Sometimes we mix it, and that's terrible.
    The challenge will be to teach the generations that come after us to talk albanian. It's a very beautiful language and should never be forgotten.
    I choose to write this comment in english so more people can understand it.

      There's always been a presence of Albanian speakers since antiquity in what is called Greece. Even Herodotus says that Iliryan/Epirotes tribes lived all the way to the Ambracian Gulf or Arta today. So, it was a "migration" within their own Illyrian Peninsula.

      Well we have concrete evidence in records of Albanian migrations (groups of thousands at time) descending towards Athens and the Peloponnese around the 12th century upon the request of Catalonian/French/Venetian rulers to act as mercenaries in abandoned fortifications along the seaside. After hundreds of years, this population became a distinct component to the overall identity of the region. As to the ancient origins of Albanians, it's clear that there is an ancient Greek component, as well as Thracian and Dardanian elements. The Illyrian claim is more tricky as the area attributed to Illyria is vast, I think it's better to frame such discussions with specific Illyrian tribes that Albanians could have plausibly descended from. And from what we know from sources, Illyrian tribes did not view themselves as a collective and maintained diverse practices of worship.

    @4:37 Fan Noli served as Prime Minister and regent of Albania for a short while, but he was Archbishop, Metropolitan and founder of the Albanian Orthodox Church and the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America..
    Also, they don't have to be three "theories" because different groups of people moved into that area for different purposes..
    It is well known and documented that the Byzantine Emperor Kantakuzenes moved a group of Albanians there from the North Albania to re-populate an area hit by wars and epidemics, people able also to defend it from imminent Ottoman attacks.
    Another group there, I have read, connect themselves with builders from Kolonja, Albania area that were brought to build the Selimiye Mosque, of the great architect Sinan (born Joseph) they settled in Zaloufi, still albanophone - when you say "shqiptarke" that's typical for Kolonja/Korça 😊

    The same way an Arber from Greece is confused about the term Shqiptar, I also used to be confused until I come to realize that being Shqiptar does not have to do with ethnicity.
    Shqiptaria is an ideology, it is not an ethnicity.
    Albanians never stopped being Arber. My great grandfather was an Arber, why did i stop being an Arber and got transformed into Shqiptar?
    That is because Shqiptaria is an ideology. It came as an idea from the Arbers of Italy during Albanian Renaissance.
    Shqiptaria was a philosophy that was born at the times when a nation divided between Abrahamic religions needed a common element. Arbers of different religion (orthodox, catholic, or muslims) had to have a common belief in order to distinguish themselves from other nations.
    Turkey used islam as pillar of its foundation, other Balkan countries used orthodoxy and catholicism as pillars of their countries foundations.
    Albanians invented the notion of Shqiptaria, which was an idea of including all religions and accept each other differences in the name of Arberia; which later on become to be known as Shqiptaria.
    So in other words, i am an still Arber that believes in the philosophy Shqiptaria. Being a shqiptar is like a lifestyle, is like choosing to be a stoic, or a buddhist, or practitioner of a certain religion.
    The phisolphy of Shqiptaria includes many elements in itself, one of them is the heritage of Arberia which includes the language, traditions, history, common background and many more.
    Hope this help:) keep up with the good work!

    • @roolentodd395
      @roolentodd395 2 роки тому +5

      You are mistaken. Albanians started calling themselves Shqipetare instead of Arbereshe long before nationalism/Albanian Renaissance. It was a natural evolution of the ethnonym over time. We have plenty of evidence of Albanians calling themselves Shqipetare before this. Shqiptare replaced Arbereshe in the late 17th/early 18th century.
      This is why the man in this video, from Thrace, says his people call themselves Shqipetare in their dialect of Albanian. They were no where near where Albanian nationalism was happening. They didn't suddenly change their ehtnonym.

    • @TheAldo20011
      @TheAldo20011 2 роки тому +2

      "The name Arbën/Arbër is an ancient name of a nation and people and is even older than the names shqip, shqiptar, Shqipëri, and Shqipni, which dominate today. In Albania, this name is alive from the South to the North.
      Regarding the expansion of the national name, it can be said that this name had an expansion of geographical use in the 14th century. It is thought that this name was expanded all over the country since the Skenderbeu era, by evolving from a tribe or province’s name to a national name of the country. This name was also taken by those who were ousted to Greece and Italy in the 14th and 15th century, who did not recognize the name shqiptar, Shqipni/Shqipëri, etc., which is seen to be younger and born or generalized in Albania after their displacement. [4, P.65]"
      "The words Shqipëri and Shqiptar are attested from 14th century onward, but it was only at the end of 17th and beginning of the early 18th centuries that the placename Shqipëria and the ethnic demonym Shqiptarë gradually replaced Arbëria and Arbëreshë amongst Albanian speakers in the Balkans."

      @@roolentodd395 I am not sure to what evidences you are referring to, but the first historian that recorded Albanian history in Albanian language is Marin Barleti, and in all of his writings Albanians are either called as Arbers, Macedoninas, or Epirotans. Shqiperia was not invented as an idea at middle ages, and Barleti does not mentioned it in none of his books.

    • @arberia8951
      @arberia8951 2 роки тому +3

      @@TheAldo20011 You can speculate and come up with many other theories about the origin of the term "Shqiptar", the point is that the reason why Shqiptaria was embraced as an idea it was because it was used as a philosophy of unification.
      People did not start to call themselves shqiptar just because they wanted it and thought it was cool to do so.
      It was through Albanian Renaissance that writers in Arbersh communities in Italy, and other colonies at other countries in Balkans started to come together and develop the ideology of Shqiptaria.
      Albanian Renaissance started to develop at those times when speaking Albanian was considered as heresy in Orthodox church and haram in the High Porte.
      That was the time when the underground newspapers and writings started to use the term Shiptaria alongside with the one of Arberia.
      Shqiptaria was a term that was embraced out of necessity in order to unify a nation divided by different Abrahamic believes.
      I mentioned in the comment above, that Marin Barleti never used the term Shqiptaria in none of his writings and that is an indicator to me that Shqiptaria was not a know name during middle ages. Even if it was around as a term, it must have been of small significance, because if it would have been important, Barleti would have mentioned it at least once.
      I still believe that Shqiptaria it is just an ideology, Albanians never stopped being Arber. Yes we are Arbers that believe in Shqiptaria, but people of different background can also become Shqiptar if they embrace its philosophy language and tradition. Bottom line Albanians ethnicity is Arber, mainstream ideology that they follow is Shqiptaria.

It just means that we adopted to the new name like the rest of Albanians. Even here you will find people that try to separate themselves from Albania and out emphasis on our identity as Kosovare and even prefer using the ghegh dialects..but yeah we dont really take them that serious.

Simon, Albanian speakers in Thrace are not Arvanitis but Albanian. They are recent migrants from south-eastern Albania that migrated during the 1700-1800s. Greeks call all Albanian speakers in Greece Arvanitis out of insecurity, even Albanian settlement next to the Albanian border are called Arvanitis, to "distinguish" them from Albanians even though this label is incorrect. The label is only correct for Albanian speaking communities that settled Greece during the late middle ages.

    • @zjarr6279

      @ Well re-watch your own interview, he calls his language Shkip, a proper Arvanitis would not say that because they separated from the main body of Albanians before this new concept entered the Albanian consciousness, so the word Shkip would be alien to a real Arvanitis. The Thracian community are not decedent from Arvanitis linguistically or blood, they are literally immigrants from south-eastern Albania, two-three centuries ago. They are not a branch of Arvanitis. This label on them is a political maneuver. You should not be using the enemies language or give this abuse of the term your support. Greek policy in general is to not even acknowledge Albanian speakers in south Albania as Albanian if they are Orthodox. This is clear cut and consistent act of bad faith, you should not support this artificial wedge they created. Your guest's cousin Fan Noli, established the Albanian Orthodox church, not the Arvanitis Orthodox church, take a guess why.

      @@kateinnyc The term Epirus exists since antiquity as a Hellenic (Greek) kingdom. So Nothern Epirus is the part of Epirus that is not part of modern Greece. Im not saying Greece must take over southern Albania of course, Im just explaining the term.

    Dy and di is not different. Dy is standard language that we learned at school, while di is southwest (himare, sarande, gjirokaster) and northeast (diber). Also gjysem gjisem. Y is rarely used in southwestern Albania in spoken language. It is one of an endless list of "corrected" words to standardize the language.

      How do you mean by it’s not different? They are different phonologically speaking

      @ I mean they are both Albanian and still used depending on the region. So saying that in Albanian it is "dy" is wrong. It is both dy and di, regardless of which one a small group of "linguists" decided to adopt for the official language.

      @ARBËRESH TV what he means to say is that people from southwest Albania or Chams pronounce two as "di" instead of "dy" so people who are acquainted with these dialects know what they mean
