I put the grease in the lug with a toothpick. Way less messy. And the wax also gives the head a little lubrication, which keeps the shell round a little longer. So it does double duty. The only issue with the wax is it can deaden the head for a week or so if there is too much wax on the bearing edge. Great video man
Met EMC at the RCC show and it was incredible watching them. Honestly crazy to hear a drumline that clean. Really cool guy and was kind enough to answer my friends and I questions. Good luck on the rest of your tour and keep up the amazing work.
It's tuned so high because the sound that people hear from the crowd is much lower then what you play so to accommodate for that they are tuned higher.
Use "off" (yes the bug spray) and spray the logo on the spock. Let it sit for 5ish minutes then with a paper towel scrub the logo off. You need to put a good amount of pressure to get it off but it'll make it so you don't smear your heads. That's what my techs have me do at Stryke.
Do you know if those high tunings would come out well on suede heads? I'm specifically asking more about Remo's black Emperor suede heads because I've been wanting to try nice and high tunings like that for our quad line but I'm worried about tuning to high for the heads cause I've never tried that high lol would appreciate some help!
Head change EVERY TWO WEEKS? Holy shit. We do a whole season like practice in July and August then football games and competitions and stuff. Then pep band. And we change once a year. Drum heads are expensive
My friend last year got a tenor with a broken head. She asked Mr. Jenkins (our band teacher) if he could change the head. He said the he would fix it later. This year I joined band and I got the same one that she got last year. It's still fucking broken.
Why specific notes instead of the vaguer "intervals"? What happens if a song's key signature doesn't have one of the specific notes? Like a tune is in C, do you not play on the A# and C#?
I always wondered how many ensembles the different branches of the military have. Like how many groups does the marine corps have? Or are you the only 3 tenor players in the entire marine corps?
Yair Salazar it depends on how much money the school (or school district) has for band. Some kids are privileged enough to play drums that replace their heads often and some aren’t. It just is what it is
Came here today because someone on Instagram asked Eric to do a Tuning the Tenor's video. Sent him the information for this post! (Language says is Portuguese!) 7-16-2024
I don't play drums at all, but I am captivated watching you play them because it's a "precision thing" and I'm all about that! I think you guys are overqualified for just 5 drums and you're ready to level up to 8 or maybe even 10. You guys are young and buff ... c'mon show us what REAL MARINE drummers can handle! 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
@@SwimminWitDaFishies That would be super heavy and bad for your back, and quads only have 4, 5, or 6 drums (depends on how many spocks, or the tiny drums you have). It would be pretty impractical, and it would change your center of mass which would make marching awkward. Also, all of those head changes would be such a pain lol
Is it me or are the notes in your diagram off from what you hear on the video? I hear low to high E - G - A# - C# (so same minor thirds, wrong starting pitch)
I'm a sophomore in high school and my director didn't have us unload our drums from our trailer after a football game and now my drum four is flat. I've done the best I can with the other drums, but It's still flat. Does anyone know how to fix that? I've tried tuning it higher but it still sounds bad.
Do you have any sheet music I can use for quads? I can't seem to find any good exercises (especially 8 on a hand) and i would really appreciate it if someone could link me some.
The best heads are the ones that you have on your shoulders because they store all of the knowledge that you could ever use. Use your head kids. Learn something. But don't drum on it tho that would be dumb
Tenor Covers yes. You tighten the each lug the same amount like he showed in the video, and then tune each lug so they match. If you’re looking for a higher pitch, you increase the tension and you release tension to lower the pitch
WARNING: Method not recommended for tuning contras. (I marched in DCI in 1984 and our eight contras were adopted drum techs. My low frequency colleagues and I helped the battery with head changes (up to finger tight) and helped our five non-singing, tone deaf bass drummers get their heads up pitch. (No, like most people they could not hear that low accurately, but as tuba players we could.) This allowed the staff to do all the final tuning. We also were the harness hardware bitches. Lots of deez nuts to tighten up, boi. I think the snares considered the contra players to be indentured servants or something. It was a fun way to sit in the shade while the hornline sweated out basic block marching or brass sectionals. (The battery *always* found the best - or only - shade. Imagine 25 players all crammed into the tiny shade patch of one, scraggly tree in a field in Nebraska.) By the way, we were a Top Twelve corps back then, but with a very low budget, so I remember head changing days happening about as often as Laundry Day, which was around every two weeks, two tours of a total of 32,000 miles and 36 shows. (We also walked to school. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways.) Yes, in the early 1980s we all had stanky clothes and our drum heads sounded like a tonal flabalanche, but technologically speaking our line was using the then-popular Slingerland TDR snares (with the slapshot strainer! woohoo!) and a 36" Bass 5. Ancient history.) "America's Quad Line" - You guys need your own distinctive red and gold teeshirts with that on it. That name is pure sexy. Subbing your new page, guys.
Wow marched Jr. Corps from 1975 to 1980 this video could have saved our quad line from 250 pushups each person over the years for putting on new heads at rehearsal & breaking them weekly cranking em up never ever used wax or was instructed to use wax. Wow
Don't feel bad. Using wax on bearing edges is nothing new, but it's still not widely used or even widely known... and actually this is the first tuning instruction I've seen that gives away the magic trick. Hard wax does a fantastic job of allowing the head to slip over the edge more easily while cranking on it, but on the other hand It also tends to take away "some" of the brightness of the drum (how much completely depends on the brand of drums, condition, heads, and how the wax is applied). If I had to guess, using wax on late 70's drums would have certainly preserved the heads, but they may have ended up sounding like tuned cardboard boxes. On a more personal note, Thank you for keeping the activity going for us later generations to enjoy!
He auditioned specially for the drum and bugle corps that exists within the marines, won the audition, THEN did boot camp and started with the corps afterwards

Tbh EMC doesn't get enough credit that he deserves. His videos are funny and entertaining but at the same time educational (some what 😂)
I would have killed to have access to all this info on something like UA-cam in 89

Eric, this might be the most informative and helpful tenor head tutorial on all of UA-cam. Thanks so much for this.
I haven’t played in drum line for over 30 years and I’m addicted to your channel ! 💯💯💯
Instead of throwing out the heads, could you lend them to our school? lol
That could lead to damaging your tenors. Also depending on how you tune especially high schools. You may pull the head.
Rogue how would it damage the tenors? Those heads look the same size as ours. We also tune almost to the same pitch as theirs.
Just as a tip: most cases of asking for things will warrant no response because it is too troublesome
Love the hardstyle in the background lol
Hardstyle? Where?

We have multiple extra snares or extra quads. So we just change what snare/tenor set you're using unless bass

I really love this UA-cam channel it is so helpful to drummers out there like me!!!!!
Nice Video!!!
Its great to see this vid back.
Awesome video! Is there any way we could get some insight into how you guys tune the basses as well? Say hi to Garrett for me!
Those drums are about 200% higher than I tune my Jazz kit. Insane.
That's how that kind of drum sounds normaly
It's tuned so high because the sound that people hear from the crowd is much lower then what you play so to accommodate for that they are tuned higher.
I hate changing strings on my guitar (Floyd Rose bridges are a pain), but I hate changing drum heads even more 😂
Nah tryna restring a Floyd is more annoying lol
At my HS we like NEVER tune our drums. It got so bad that head 1 was LOWER than drum 2, until I, the mf freshman, offered to finally tune the quads
Wow that is insane
Fun note about white lithium grease: inhalation in an enclosed area can cause sudden death. Stated right on the can.

if they break we still dont change them.
