Really glad I found the part of UA-cam where people with a real eye for art and lost magic are posting. I’m sick of the influencer side of YT where the only goal is to gain millions of followers through click bait and gimmicks. It makes me feel sick inside. Videos like this feel like sipping fresh cold water after living on a diet of flat room temp sodas for years.
Yo i feel it the same. This is something what was really missing. In times where everyone is just trying to capture the best BOKEH and cheap video tricks everyone can do after 1 tutorial is so disappointing to me. Like what the fuck? Is this still art or just bunch of people running with cameras doing the same shit in their neighborhood?
I feel the same way. It can be a lot of pressure for others to create the same content as them as it's the only way to get followers instead of listening to their creative intuition and compromising it.
Really some amazing & clear photographs of Tokyo. A huge city with such a vibe, restaurants, malls and those eye popping camera stores. Visited once and this video makes me want to visit again. That Pentax medium format SLR is a beast of a camera but what good images. Well done.
I was there in september and I felt exactly the same thing.. in tokyo you can find LITERALY everything.. and everything is in absolut perfect condition.. but you pay exactly the same price as everywhere else if not more.
Thank you for making this, I was there a month ago with basically the same idea I walked around the same places you did, unfortunately my pictures were not as good as I would like and I didn’t do much video either, this makes it up for me :)
Could we get a list of perhaps the best camera shops you would recommend? I'll be in Tokyo this time next year and definitely have my eye on a Contax T2 and perhaps a Pentax 67 :o. Thanks!!
Japan Camera Hunter has a list of some of the well known ones on its website, plus some info on each of them. The most important thing to know is that some stores sell all or some of their gear on consignment (and so it may not have been tested, or poorly graded and possibly without returns) This is Contax specialist, and they used to have plenty of T2 a few years back. Never bought from them though, so I've no idea. www.gokurakudo.net/ I don't think I would bother with a T2 these days. Way overpriced. This store is recommended by Tokyo Camera Style www.mitsubado.com/
If you go to shibuya, there is a store to the left crossing from the station. It is lit up with lights that sell like different technology. It will catch your eye. It should be the third or fourth floor that has a huge inventory of cameras. From new to old and I bring my cameras to test the lens. It reminds me of B&H walking in if you ever been to the one in NY. It is about the same price as the US but since yen is like a 92yen to a $1 on some days for exchange, you could get lucky and save a lot. I am going back there in three weeks to eat and planning to visit this store and another camera store in Tokyo.
I used Japan Camera Hunter to find places to visit: - LEMONSHA, SHINJUKU - MAP CAMERA, SHINJUKU - mix of digital and film - CHUUKO CAMERA BOX, SHINJUKU - this one, has tons of cameras crammed in to a small store - SHINJUKU USED CAMERA MARKET, SHINJUKU - wide range, a lot of lenses if i remember correctly - KITAMURA SHINJUKU DAI-GADO, SHINJUKU - LEMON, GINZA - SHIMIZU CAMERA, GINZA - the one in the video that has a huge window display These were the main ones I visited, but i'd recommend checking out the JCH resource for a better breakdown from someone who seems to have visited all of them: www.japancamerahunter.com/2013/05/the-complete-tokyo-camera-shopping-guide/
@@radicaleyemag For anyone looking for medium format, I would recommend; Shimbashi ichi [near Ueno] Nisshin [Akihabara] Fujiya [Nakano] Sukiya [Ginza] MAP [Shinjuku] Lemon [Ginza] Camera Alps [Shinjuku] Shoppers should be aware that Ginza prices are usually at a premium because it's the fancy part of town, and MAP is also at the higher end price wise. MAP's website is pretty easy to use for an idea on prices and stock, and most items have a returns policy. MAP is also hassle free because they speak good English. Some of the other stores can be hit and miss with which staff speak English. Places like Lemon are consignment stores and won't accept returns, so it's important to check things carefully and not assume the price or condition stated reflects what you're buying. I doubt anyone is going to find much of a bargain in central Tokyo [buying film gear], although there's generally a better selection and better condition, including super rare stuff compared to most countries, I guess. I certainly wouldn't buy anything from 'Film Camera Tokyo' in Harajuku because their prices on instagram seem ridiculously high, but they seem to have stacks of Contax T2 or T3 and other premium compacts. For those who can choose the time of year to visit Tokyo, there is also a camera fair held usually three times a year, by ICS, and they also have a fair at CP+ in Yokohama. Prices aren't necessarily lower, but there will be tons of gear from a lot of the camera stores all in one place.
check out yahoo auctions japan! There’s a proxy service called buyee that helps you ship the items for some fee but usually for first time users theres a coupon to waive fees or discount that charge. Picked up my mamiya 6 body for 700 usd with shipping and fees. My canera came within a week and a half. Also spotted a mamiya 7ii with 3 lens for 2k usd on the germany ebay 3 days ago. Not sure if someone swooped on that deal yet.
Man I was just in Tokyo at the beginning of the month and visited a lot of these same spots. Actually made a video about it too! The store Camera Box is crazy. So much stuff crammed in there, you could dig through stuff for days in there. Dope video tho, hope the whole trip was fun for yall.
If I had to guess, I'd say it was actually shot on a smartphone and then just heavily graded. There's several indications from the quality of the motion blur, the depth of field, and the jello effect of the image stabilization that indicate to me that it was shot on a phone.
Really admire these photos. How did you get the exposures so right? Do you use a hand held light meter such as Sekonic? Well done. Those film camera stores are simply amazing...the Mamiya 7 would be my first choice, as I have a Mamiya 645 and it is harder to hold on the go.
I would love to go to Tokyo someday see all the beautiful beautiful colorful things the firecrackers the pretty people and The different styles different than Americans world 🌎😀🥰

Absolute waste of time I wanted to see a video about camera shopping and only a minute of worthless info
thanks for watching

Your channel has been a hidden gem for me, finally the UA-cam algorithm showed me an awesome recommendation!
