The most ridiculous use of "world champion" is the Super Bowl, where it is people playing American football in a format that isn't really played anywhere else. I get the complaint that MLB and the NBA are the best leagues, but who's to say the Japanese champion couldn't beat the Dodgers?
ok but... was he wrong? they werent world champions since they didnt play internationally, NBA literally stands for *national* basketball association. not international, national.
Like others said, he's not wrong. Btw, sprinting is a more accessible sport worldwide and that makes it much harder to compete at the world stage because there are more talents. Basketball is only played in certain continents where people can afford sports facilities. Many atheletes call themselves athletes but have zero understanding of sports competition. For example, ask yourself this, why did the Americans and Europeans dominate the long distance events in the early 20th century? The Africans came into the scene in 60s and absolutely destroyed the Americans and Europeans, breaking almost all the world records in less than a decade. Ask yourself why. Another example, why are there many top triathletes from EU and Oceania? Just imagine if many more atheletes in many more countries can afford a road bike and have access to a swimming pool, the sports will definitely become much more competitive. Sprinting is a much much more competitive sport than basketball it's not even a fair comparison.
American football is a sport that is almost exclusively played in America when they could just play the far more interesting rugby, Basketball is only really played internationally consistently at the olympics and baseball is also played mostly in America with a few exceptions like Japan where teams could arguably win in some instances. Also its not like these "world champion teams" havent lost to european and asian teams before.
I disagree with Noah Lyles because NFL, MLB, and NBA are all the pinnacles of their respective sports, so calling themselves “world champions” does not seem out of place. This does not take away from the fact that Noah is a heck of an athlete. This being said, to support track, he did not have to degrade other sports.
