Yes items are safe in any form of storage. In fact nothing despawns in this game. Keep in mind that if you have meat or flour, veggies, any rare food items, store them outside so that they degrade more slowly. Other tips: make yourself a pair of improvised crampons. Ice won't break as quickly and your sprain risk decreases. Once you start finding sewing kits, keep your clothing repaired at all times. I typically don't let mine get below 80%. One animal attack is all it takes to destroy your clothing and then you are in serious trouble. Same goes for tools and guns. Old man's beard lichen is your friend.
the "drop" is for dropping a decoy for when wolves are chasing you, if you have meat on you it will drop some when you click the "drop decoy" hand icon
You can daisy chain torches that you pull off the fire it does lower the duration of the fire by 10mins per torch just pull one off put it out pull another one off then Before it runs out toss it on the ground and pull out an unlit torch you'll be able to light it off the one you dropped long as it keeps buring. You can start a fire in the bottom of the dam in a burn barrel. If you follow the train tracks back the way you came you'll see a cabin to the left call camp office it has fire place and work bench. There's also a cabin in the left corner of the map called trapper cabin also a great place plus a gun can spawn there. Explore the map much as possible mystery lake is a really good beginner map plenty of resources and there's fishing you can do on the lake if you get a pry bar or hatchet some fishing line and hook. You can craft line from cured guts and craft a hook from scrap metal. Stones are great for distraction purposes against wolves and you can hunt rabbits and birds with them. There's tons of looting to do in the game explore explore explore don't let fear hold you back.
You can set up camp fires in the train cars and lay down sleeping bags there if It is getting dark and you are cold. Also once you start a camp fire you can take Torches. Try not to use all your flares they are useful to scare away Wolves while you try to find a building or car to get into to get away from them. You can also speed up the cooking helps get the sun up while you are waiting. Also do not burn books until you read them there important to read and improve your skills
Hey Floppy I’m pretty sure that when you was searching in the dark on the shelves right beside the doors just inside the Hydroplant that it had said Lantern that you looked over. You had already found Lantern fluid and in your inventory I believe. Hopefully that’s helpful. ❣️

Floppy, please get the Far Territories DLC (on sale right now) and do a play through. This game is a masterpiece. Torches are your friend in many ways, you can craft them at any time and can pull them from a fire. Black wolves can be warded off by lighting a torch (a flare if the wind precludes using a torch) and then choose a rock from the radial menu - aim the rock at the wolf (do not throw the rock) and hold your aim, the wolf will charge but will veer off yipping at the last moment. When searching for loot look everywhere, underthings and in every corner. You can use any storage that you find as your own storage. My list of things to get as quickly as possible (besides good clothing): cooking pot, knife, hatchet, prybar, bow and arrows, distress pistol and flares for it. Do not waste the distress pistol flares, save them for bear/ moose encounters. My #1 goal when starting a new game - weight managment - I want the large backpack, a moosehide satchel asap. You can get a weight carrying boost by staying fed (meter doesn't run out) for 72 hours. Stay fed and you keep the bonus indefinitely. Predators are more aggressive at night and even more so during an aurora event. You can level up various skills. NEVER FORGET YOUR BEDROLL BEHIND - ask me how I know... With 15 sticks and 5 cloth you can build a snow shelter - good for example when lost in a blizzard (can save your life) Good luck and have fun, hoping this will be aq long series!
Just found ya over the holiday, keep up the long dark content, love it! I have over 500hrs in and honestly it's beautiful and punishing, always an awesome challenge and tons of fun to see new folks discover it! 🍻
This game is amazing when you play it for the first time and you have no idea where things are, after 2200 hours i pretty much know within a few seconds which region i am in, but the game is still super fun and challenging for sure.

Love how unforgiving and brutal this game can be! This particular environment and frigid biome does not hold your hand in the slightest in any aspect whatsoever! This game does not give even a fraction of a f*** about you and your fighting will to survive regardless how hard you try! This is an extremely challenging and chaotic fight for survival and self preservation aimed towards your chance at survival! That being said, this is just merely a suggestion but if you want some good tips and tricks for surviving through "The Long Dark", Neebs Gaming has a very well done and sometimes hilarious playthrough of this game. It's worth a watch or in your case maybe a skim thru as to not spoil too much for yourself, I guarantee you will learn things you previously weren't aware of about this game! Can't wait to see where this journey takes you in this "kick you when your down" fight for survival!

This is not true. Food items will despawn in storage at 0%. Clothing won't and is safe in storage.

You can crack the safes. You'll get better man. Be careful in buildings with wires down when a Aurora hits the wires will fry you

The flares are also good to keep wolves away. And I think the raw meat you carry makes you attract the animals

Yes please play a lot more of this also make sure the water says potable you have to melt the water first then boil it till it’s drinkable.
