as one of the best coaches in the world who is one of the best squatters in the world, you should write a training manual for kids or complete beginners in which you explain step by step how to learn perfect technique over a long period of time without getting injuries, but above all what is necessary and what muscles need to be built before you can even start squats, i.e. if someone doesn’t even have hamstrings or proper abs and glutes. Such a beginner squat manual would be awesome and would help everyone, whether it's a high school kid just starting out in their careers or a senior who is starting out later in life and wants to benefit from squats

I'm so sorry to hear about the lifted that broke his neck. Everything you said about learning technique with belt squats and as soon as a lifters technique starts to break down, don't continue to increase the weight STOP. I've completed with the best weightlifting and Powerlifting coach's in the World, from all the way back in the early 70s. When I started I used a broom stick until my coach( Herb Glossbrenner) thought it was time to go to the bar. Like you said, your not competing in the gym.To many lifters leave their best lifts in the gym. I completed in a little over 300 competitions in weightlifting and Powerlifting , because of my coach's I had very few injuries in my career. My 1st meet was in 74 last in 2015. It has caused some problems that I have now, I don't know many competitive lifter that don't have some back, hip, knee or something along that line after years of competition. Again I'm sorry to hear about that terrible accident. Thank you for bringing some very important issues on safe training to the story.

The spotting at most meets is easily as dangerous, lifters can't dump heavy weights from their shoulders without harming the spotters. We have seen some weird bails when a lifter can't get the weight. Even in meets they should use safeties or chains.

I have a DIY squat rack made of wood beams and and the first thing I made for it were proper spotter arms. It can hold 1000+ lb wihtout a squeak. I take no chances when it comes to safety. The bench I have has no safety arms, so I made some stackable boxes that can be used for many purposes in the gym - I stack them to the proper height below the plates and voila, bench spotters! If the rep fails I just flatten my back, rest the plates on the boxes and slide out under the bar.

For benching I have it set so that I have to lift my chest up otherwise on the descent the bar will bang against the safety bars instead of touching my chest. So if I ever fail I just depress my back as you said and the safety bar will take it.

Something can always go wrong, even with lighter weights, even when you're experienced. You NEED safety arms/straps. Even 225lbs, a weight most advanced guys use literally to mobilize their depth at the bottomy ie sub 50%, is still heavy enough to injure you if something goes badly wrong.
IMO we should be forcing novices to learn how to use safety equipment properly, for Bench and Squat, even if they're only squatting 135lbs.

I told my son don’t touch weights until you can do 200 consecutive pushups. More to test his commitment than anything. So these knuckleheads get together and immediately his cousins start challenging him to try 200 pounds. He tries and of course her tears his pectoralis major in two. He works for a large hospital in our state thankfully. I started lifting with him recently. All I taught him was technique. I also taught him slow reps and breathing. Not screaming breathing. Negative resistance lifting. Sorry I can’t think of the technical term for it. I’m too lazy to google.

For some it's to achieve something that takes a lot of work and a long time to prove to themselves they can do something great. Similar to learning music. When you finally make clear progress you can be proud of yourself.
Lifting way more than you can handle doesn't help with any of those reasons 😔

by the looks of things the guy can squat heavy but some people underestimate what felt light last week might be very heavy the next. I have gone to the gym a few times squatted and the same weight felt horrid and I had to tense for my life to get out of the bottom and this I why I dont do low reps anymore as I cant risk it with my condition of fibromyalgia. I still go heavy but mostly leg press, lunges, hack squat or just high rep goblet squats. it's not worth the risk sometimes and we have to just go lighter if your having a bad week or even not squat at all and work on other movements like lunges or cossack squats for mobility.

When I was fortunate enough to meet someone who had proper squat knowledge, I went bodyweight only to learn proper form.

One of the first things I learned in highschool power lifting is safety awareness. If you can’t manage the weight, you shouldn’t be spotting. TWO egos are to blame here.
I single spotter from the back is what a personal trainer does to help the avg gym members with their form. On lifts like squats where big weight is being pushed for PR, two spotters that can catch and handle that weight is required. Unless they and the other spotters know they can easily manage the weight together, they shouldn’t be spotting.
I don’t know what that guy thought he was gonna accomplish back there. Unless he could stand there Mike Metzger style and catch that 450 in a static curl, he was just in the way

When dealing with heavy weight u need a spotter. Lifters have to be realistic if u know the weight is getting heavy get someone to spot u.

So when Matt posts an educational video or something that could actually help people and make them train smarter and possibly save someone's life that video gets nowhere near the traction it deserves but when a tragedy happens and he shares his thoughts on it it all of a sudden gets millions of views!? That's a weird world we're living in...

How much of an issue is knee valgus while leaving the hole? My knees bend inwards while leaving the hole during my top set, and I haven't found enough conclusive material to decide if I should stick to a lower weight that I can fully control without knees going in.

@@WenningStrength Thank you. I've had the same feeling, as it just didn't feel as stable as doing it with lower weights. I'll stick to weights I can fully control and do reps until I feel the knee going in, until I figure out what's causing it.

I've seen this a few times over the past few days and it makes me sick to my stomach. There is so much wrong with everything in it; why attempt a lift you're clearly not comfortable with in that setup, no spotter arms at minimum, why have a single spotter on that weight that is heavy for you, why have a spotter that you don't trust/know with a weight you're not comfortable with, piss poor bar placement, his stance for this situation was not ideal, not being prepared for a bail, just so much.

Very unfortunate. Our egos, if left unchecked, will cause us to really hurt ourselves. A lot of gym goers are novice weightlifters (including bodybuilders). Also, powerlifting is clearly different from bodybuilding yet people constantly confuse the two because they equate big muscles with powerlifting.
Commercial gyms are not set up to be powerlifting gyms. These gyms are for fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilding. Unfortunately, commercial gyms are used as powerlifting gyms and there are no safety protections.

All of the fault lies with the lifter and I agree with the points made in the video but why in the hell is the spotter trying to bicep curl 200kg, even worse if he's touching the entire descent. So many scenarios where this tragedy could've been avoided.

He could have fallen flat on his face to the ground and survived. You might break your nose or maybe just some bruises but better than a broken neck and death. plate size was designed so that the bar doesn't crush your head. Easily avoidable by not attempting a weight that breaks your form, use safeties. always have a bailout plan you know for certain that will work even if it means a face plant.. don't rely on spotters

How tragic, careless ; and probably even reckless and stupid !
    As a WNPF State Historical Record Holder ;
I think : That first of all, he was trying to lift too much weight.
And beyond that - he should have ideally been squatting inside the Power Rack ; or at a minimum, have had at least 2 spotters - one on each side.
All lifters have to respect the weight & take all precautions to safeguard themselves, at all times.
