How true. Also commercials weren't as obnoxiously long either. A 30 minute show with adds were like 27 minutes. Now? 11 minutes of stuff I'll never buy any dam way! Lol
The foul-tempered Southern sheriff is a trope going back to 50s B-movies..."you ain't from around here, are ya boy?" The pilot episode of Route 66 had the Corvette guys running afoul of a Mississippi trooper.
This commercial was filmed in Carlsbad California. Right next to a private boy's school. Myself and several other of the young men from the private school went over to watch them filming the commercial for this brand new great looking car. The car that you see in the commercial did not have an interior in it at all it had one incomplete seat for them to drive it off and on a trailer. Ahhhhhh sweet memories of my youth.
I remember watching these when they first aired; there were a whole series of commercials by Chrysler with the 'Country Sheriff' type of character, they were hilarious to us then!
Drove one for several years. By the time I drove it, it was all ready a rust bucket but I had the Mopar Clubs insurance on it. Stated value on the books, it had a clean title and that's what restorers wanted, went for good money. Lucky the guy who bought it had the K frame assembly for the Hemi for it. Made for a nice restoration and conversion!
They played this first Saturday afternoons on college football. I about fell off the couch laughing when I first saw it. "Boy, yuna heapa trouble" became a law enforcement meme in the '70's in Florida.
Bought a 2012 SRT8 but would trade it for this. I had a 67 coronet r/t with a 440 in it in 74 but sold it for 600 measly dollars in great shape! Thanks for the great video!
i never understand y ppl sell a car they love. what, it had some expensive repairs? talkin a couple grand for repairs or tens of thousands for a new 1? how much money did u really have to spend in the first place? 3k for repairs vs 30k for new car? y not save 27k and keep the car u love???
Got a 1970 Challenger in 1974 but the cheap version. 318 c.i. 2 barrel carb, single exhaust. 17 second quarter mile, WooHoo! 17 mpg wasn't bad for the 70s. I loved it because it looked cool & handled well. Also never stranded me unlike two 90s Dodges I had.
Proof that the term "boy" used in the south in those days was not racially discriminatory. It wasn't exactly a term of respect, but it was used for anyone !!
@@williamjackson5942 Your example is a pretty good one. So do you agree that use of the term by a 68 year old man referring to a 20 year old male is not (in and of itself) racist?
@@williamjackson5942 sir I’m from Tennessee you only call young men boy you call people older than you sir or ma’am. No mater the race or color is a southern thing.
I was lucky enough to be a Mechanic at a Dodge dealership in 69 and 70 and actually got to drive some of that stuff. You could put Hemi Heads on the 440 back then pretty cheap too. I love this car.
I grew up with a ‘70 Challenger R/T convertible, 383 magnum, slapstick auto. Candy apple red with white interior and top. That car flew and had the best lines.
Southern cop has a big 1970 Plymouth sedan with a 440/727 Torqueflite....: probably can hit 150mph. Can give a good run for the money vs... just about anything. Both cars can deliver speed.
I used to love that commercial when I was a kid growing up in Maryland but then I moved to Texas as a young man in real life that This Is How They really treat you down in the South especially if you're black
Imagine going back in time and picking up 10 or 12 cars... "I'll take one hemi cuda convertible, one hemi cuda coupe, a hemi superbee, gimme a 440 superbird, how about that 429 mustang there, yes, the GTO, put that in the cart, COPA Camaro? Can you carry that out to my vehicle for me? Thanks"

I remember this like it was yesterday, ended up buying a 1972 Challenger with the 318 engine,50 years later I ordered a 2022 Challenger Scatpack, Widebody, Shaker Hood with the 6.4 Hemi Engine, it puts a smile on my face every time it’s started.
What kind of soup did you use? Hope it wasn't creamy corn chowder, that's just a bad soup. Now, if you used an italian wedding soup, that's a solid choice.
Old Sheriff Joe Higgans. Always loved this car when it came out and especially the Plum Crazy color. Couldnt afford the insurance on it at the time which was JUST under 4 figures a year because of my age, NOT my driving record. Ya' All Drive Careful Now Heah... In a Dodge was Sheriff Joe's tagline I recall.
Hard to believe this is 51 years ago. I didn't have no Chrysler products as I had a 65 mustang GT with the 289 hi po. But my friend did have a duster 72 340 it was pretty quick. Good old days.
We used to get up and go to the refrigerator when commercials like this came on. Now we watch them for hours on end on UA-cam.. LOL!
lol👍

@LA Ryan Not if I had to take a massive dump. That was always priority one.
Checkm8king2: I remember those commercials with that police officer.
Now you know where Buford T. Justice came from. Smokey and the Bandit for you little ones.
Jordendog what I was thinking.
Jordendog that’s who I thought it was in the thumbnail lol
Perhaps, or they got it from J.W Pepper from Live & Let Die (1973) came out before Smokey and the Bandit (1977)..
The foul-tempered Southern sheriff is a trope going back to 50s B-movies..."you ain't from around here, are ya boy?" The pilot episode of Route 66 had the Corvette guys running afoul of a Mississippi trooper.
And Chief Bill Gillespie
Can't beat the classics
Lol oh yes you can.the muscle cars of today put those old ones to shame with drivability and horse power .like the Dodge Hellcat just as an example.
@@duanerichardson5405 modern sports cars that are trying to be muscle cars are ugly as all hell, the classics look the best for sure
The new Challenger doesn’t look bad. If you’re thinking of an ugly car, look at the Charger.
Amen!...
Can’t beat that look, smell, or sound
Premium gas was 28.4 cents a gallon back then.
Minimum wage at that time was $1.60 hour. You got 5 gal of gas for one hour of minimum wage. in 1970.
Bobby Jo Cowpoke yes my dad was born that year
Also it was?
displayfireworks1 now it's 4 gallons on minimum.
More importantly that gas was leaded!! Not like the corn water of today!!
"careful boy , I'll book you for sassin' a law officer"
I was waiting for the Delivrance line "You got real purty lips, boy" lol
@showlogicprod Why are you Arguing with them, Get thru the problem and then go to court. You can not win by Arguing.
Now THAT's how to make a commercial!
I know, right? Not the wusses that represent dudes today.
Everyone sounds gay these days
As a kid, those Sheriff Joe Higgins Dodge commercials were a must see.......loved them! 😎😉😎
if only I was around in those days
"You're in a whole heap of trouble there, boy!"
“I’ll book you for sassin law enforcement” had me laughing out loud so hard! 😂🤣
What a fantastic muscle car!

I miss the 1970s. Everything was so much simpler then. For instance safe sex just meant having a padded headboard.
Or setting the parking brake
Padded🤣😂
I miss the 70's too. Safe sex for me was easy cause the only one I ever had sex with in the 70's was...me!

"I suppose that's a reconverted lawn mower motor" LOL! 😂😂
MOPAR TO YOU! X💖
I have that lawn mower engine in my Equinox
Awesome commercial! Funny and witty. Unlike the pathetic and idiotic commercials we have to suffer through today!
Baby boomers went from acid rock to acid reflux lol
They’re all the same, either a car driving though an empty city, or a truck driving through an empty desert. No imagination or humor.
Seems the Movie "Smokey & the Bandit" got it's ideas from THIS !
yeah there was definitely some influence on Hal Needham
I thought the exact same thing from the very beginning. Good Call. Great commercial.
*Joe Higgins* played _The Sheriff_ he was also Nils the Blacksmith on *The Rifleman*
A friend's dad was a deputy sheriff and he got to meet Joe Higgins at a law enforcement event here - Mike said it was very exciting to meet him.
For many of us growing up in the NE, this was the stereotype of southern law enforcement we were convinced was the case everywhere down there...
Awesome. I’m so glad people still have this kind of stuff from old recorded vhs’s.
That car is more awesome than the camaro in that year, i love chevrolet, ford, and dodge, but i think dodge is #1 ( my favorite car company).

Yes.

“Boy, you in a heap of trouble!” 😂😂😂
"Boy you're in the heap of trouble"
Crazy how my grandmother was able to have three of these tells you how the economy was back then.
"Boi you in a heap of trouble"
just like in the pixar cars
Gotta love the time capsule of this video very smoky and the bandit.
Back in a simpler time. Love it
I can't stop watching this.
I remember when gas prices went over 99 cents and they had to sell it by the half gallon because pumps didn’t have the extra digit.
@John Hill , I'm thinking it was around 79, possibly because of the Iran hostage situation.
Just watched an episode of Sanford and son where the actor playing the deputy here was a police sgt.
everytime i see this car, its like i fall more in love with it...its my dream car
The Challenger owner are clean and he lets the 440 do all the talking.i just like that attitude..
