Personally I really enjoyed this game and so did the guys I player with, we had it on ps2 and regularly we would bring our memory cards to each others houses to battle together and help level up faster. Digimon World 2 was Bandai's attempt to make a Digimon equivalent of dungeon crawlers around the time. Digimon World 3 was inspired by popular turn based games. And the black sheep that is Digimon World 4 was inspired by very specifically Phantasy Star Online. Bandai likes to take inspiration from other games. And by inspiration, I mean they see something and ask "What if we make a Digimon version?". It's why there's a Digimon racing game, 2 Digimon fighting games, hell even Digimon Survive is just them taking a page from SMT. So with that in mind, how does DW4 compare to PSO? Well, it's like a Digimon version with less story and worse combat. However, it's not the worst Digimon game, that goes to Dusk/Dawn. And whether it's the worst DW game comes down to how much you like or dislike the others. Personally, I loathe DW1 because of endless hard locks, and the whole set time to live(I also hate Monster Rancher for the same reason); so it gets my worst Digimon World of all time, I even rather play Dusk/Dawn. I guess it also depends on which DW game is your first introduction to Digimon. DW3 would probably be the best as a first introduction, followed by DW2. However, between DW1 and DW4, well...DW1 has infuriating hard locks, and you can't do a blind playthrough of it. While DW4 is just, well it's just a worse Phantasy Star Online in every way, except being Digimon so... Btw, while Digimon(generally) don't use weapons, it's important to note that all the Digimon Story games have equippable swords, shields, and other gear to increase their stats. So part of this game has lived on in other games.
I've played and reviewed Digimon Worlds 1-4 and the racing game so I get what you are saying about them just taking other games and going what if Digimon, although I wouldn't have guessed PSO was the inspiration as I've only seen it played and haven't played it myself. I also haven't played any of the DS Digimon games, but they are on my hit list. Whether DW4 is the worst or not really is opinion based but I was mainly going off what I had seen to be the most popular option about the Digimon franchise as well as playing off my DW3 review title saying it was the best Digimon game, once again based on what I have seen to be the most common option. Personally, Digimon World 1 is my favorite of the lot (and I remember liking Monster Rancher 2 as a kid but its been a long time since I played it) but I can easily see why anyone could easily dislike it too. All of these games have some pretty glaring flaws. Also I haven't played any of the Digimon story games yet, but based on the release dates, this game would have been one of the first to add random weapons. Weapons that feel arbitrary tacked on so it was worth noting.
Sorry for the Necropost but the game comparisons are definitely correct, except for Digimon Survive, that game is actually a visual novel with the disguise of being a tactics game lol I thought it was just a tactics game so I got sucked in but luckily I like visuals novels so that was what kept me interested and the reason why I can tell you that it's a visual novel and not smt, is there is a literal difference of endings just based on the route you take as well as a whole character is literally Pinnacle to one ending that if you don't do it properly you'll miss it every time, usually in persona/smt you just gain favor with your allies by playing but the story choices are what get you through it as well as you MUST have them at a certain percentage otherwise you'll get a completely different digivolution/cutscene and everything but you at least keep them all no matter what run you're on so it's just collecting at that point, but it like world 4 are great in their own ways! Sorry bruz didn't enjoy grinding as well as dungeon crawling gameplay lol
This is one of those games that I absolutely hated as a kid that, for whatever reason, went back to as a teenager and got full Stockholm syndrome for and ended up beating the whole thing. It's so garbage in like every way but the aesthetic of that hub speaks to me...
OH NO!!! You've got Stockholm syndrome too!!! I get it though. There's this weird sensation where, regardless of the quality, you just need to beat those childhood games that you couldn't beat as a kid. Congrats on doing it solo!
This is surprisingly the only World numerical total I've beaten and it was BRUTAL. I beat it as a kid and remember having to grind a ton just to get through it. It was monotonous at times but I did it. I remember thinking it was strange that I wasn't able to digivolve until I had completed the game. By then I was just done with it. I will say, there were a couple music tracks that I liked quite a bit. Other than that, Idk if there's any reason to return for a replay.
Yeah, you're pretty right on the mark there. Game needs a lot of grinding unless you're just stubborn like me and my crew were. We somehow beat it without grinding because the Veemon player didn't want to play this any longer than he had to. XD
@@InfiniteComboReviews it might not have been as bad if there wasn't as much grinding and you could digivolve more often to keep things interesting. The idea of an up to four player co-op Digimon World game sounds great. It's a shame this game just didn't quite land. I did play and beat Digimon World Dawn and along with Cyber Sleuth, might be a contender for my personal favorite.
@@ronstarbuck3478 Oh I 100% agree. I love co-op games and I was excited to play DW4. Sadly it just didn't land. My hope is that'll well see another shot one day. I haven't played Dawn or Cyber Sleuth yet myself.
@@InfiniteComboReviews ahh they're great man! I think they hit some sweet spots for the most part. Maybe there's a couple minor issues but I think there's a good selection of Digimon and training isn't really all that tedious. I think both are a little more linear in the sense that I didn't have to think too too hard on where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do. And at least with Cyber Sleuth, there's a couple pretty banging soundtracks too. Welcome To Eden is one of my personal favorites.

9:17 enemy count changes based on player count. Me and my cousin played this game since I owned it on ps2 and the first thing I noticed was a third goburimon in the beginning area that wasn't there in single player (at the first u-turn up to the box that always spawns a hp chip)
I love this game STRICTLY because of nostalgia and nostalgia alone. I’m only watching all these videos because I recently remembered the lobby music and the nostalgia all hit me at once. But yeah this game was TERRIBLE, but it stimulated me and my friends young minds when we were little, we spent hours and hours trying to digivolve and beat the game, only to be let down by both. BUT AT LEAST THE SOUNDTRACK WAS GOLDEN, I recently discovered a playlist on UA-cam Music featuring the music and it has been my new medium for life. 😂
@@FNoteTheVisionary Nothing wrong with liking a game simply because of nostalgia. How you experience a game can easily be more important than quality of the game itself. Though that can't really come into play for a review which a surprisingly large number of people don't seem to get. Yeah I actually had a commentor get upset at me about the music the other day so I found a Playlist and re-listened to it again. I think it's better than I gave it credit for in the video, but the games sound effects really drown it out. Plus they are a bit generic, though that hub world tune is an earworm.
I got this in 2005 and never beat it because of how hard it was. The fact that the Digimon use weapons instead of their own natural attacks came off as a surprise.
The ones that did hate the game wasn’t gamers or put time into the game like most people who like quick games to play this ya had to put a lot of time in
But hands down I love the open world digimon games but a digimon world 5 With great game play and all digimon evolutions and skills would be great!!!! Also I flying mechanic for most Digimon
I thought you unlocked a special digivolution at lvl 16, which you don't need to do a side quest for. Thanks for the review, I'm still looking forward to playing lol.
@@TRDiscordian Yeah. You might be right, but all your levels reset when you Digivolve and we were near the end and refused to grind all the way back up at that point.
There actually is a point to the charge attack. There are two kinds of enemies in Machine Pit that put up shields that reflect your attacks back at you (Raremon and Mecha Rogue 05). In Raremon's case charge attacks bypass its shield and allow you to damage it without poisoning yourself. With Mecha Rogue 05 (the big, centaur-looking one), it doesn't deal damage, but it doesn't trigger the shield either, so you can use it to "get inside" which will most likely make the Mecha Rogue drop the shield immediately (alternatively, you can attack its tail if you can reach it). How the player is supposed to figure this out on their own, I do not know. It also breaks obstacles in one hit. There's also a "shield bash" move that can be executed by holding the guard button and pressing a direction on the left stick twice. It doesn't deal damage, but it can push enemies that are in the way. Sadly, it's almost as finicky to execute as the spin attack.
So I did know about the shield bash, but none of us used it. I didn't know about the charge trick with Minotarmon, but there being 3 of us messed the need for more clever tactics.
@@growasowa3444 I feel like it was designed with the idea that players will play on thier own and then bring thoer files to friends houses for harder fights or something like that.

I remember buying this as a kid for the soul reason to Digivolve and... lets just say without UA-cam this was a impossible feat. I agree with every point made here, this game is a trash fire almost from top to bottom, with basically every poor design decision that could have been made strung together by duct tape and dental floss AND YET, I still have a deep love for it. I come back to do a solo play through at least once a year, getting the digivolutions and maxing out the stupid skills. Idk, it’s like comfort food lol I remember being little, going into Humid Cave and sitting just at the entrance before any enemies spawn and leaving the game on all night just so I could listen to the soundtrack while sleeping. I won’t pretend that it’s good, but it is significant to me
It’s pretty fun when you didn’t know a thing about digimon. I wouldn’t rated it how I would when I was a kid. But it’s definitely wasn’t the worst game I played. The worst was this yugi the bear game for the snes.
It is criminal what happen to the Digimon francise. Imagine if Dark Souls suddenly ditch its combat and changed it to turn based just because it was the current rave. The devs/publisher abandoned their player base.
This probably shouldn't have been a Digimon World game and instead just a standard Digimon game because I like the idea of a coop Digimon game. This just isn't it.
Being a digimon game, and I was expecting that I could evolve agumon back then, I stick with the game for a while waiting for that sweet evolution before I eventually dropped it and here I am finding out about the fact that you don't actually evolve them...
"The amount of enemies that swarm you don't change based on the number of friends you have." That is fundamentally UNtrue. While the type of enemy and the location they spawn in doesn't change, the game multiplies them based on how many players there are. Your own footage showed it with some early areas. The very first area you visit spawns two Goblimon. If you have 1 friend it will spawn 4, 2 friends and it spawns 6, and 3 friends will spawn 8. The individual grouping doesn't change, still 2 per player, but it DOES change the number of enemies you have to fight. If you want to fight less enemies overall, play by yourself.
I just played it almost 20 years later again and i enjoyed it more than back in the day. I understand what to do now and how the game works. As a child i didn't understand anything and had to restart everytime when i died in game lol

Digimon world 4 is interesting, much better than survive or the world 1 remake on psp/vita. I love that they keep trying to change and evolve their games over time instead of being a boring formula like pokemon.
I haven't played Survive or the PSP game yet. I've only played DW1, 2, 3, 4, and Digimon Racing. Plus I'm playing Digimon Digital Card Battle for Nov's review. I get what you are saying (although DW3 basically just steals the Pokemon formula), but the major issue is that if I went looking for another game in the series like Digimon World 4 I wouldn't find it. Even if it was successful. Usually game series follow a style or pattern so players can continue getting what they enjoy in sequels. Change ups usually come with spin offs for that specific reason which fortunately can become their own series like Kingdom Hearts or Mario Kart.
Fun fact: siblings and cousins were all into Digimon, played all the World games and Card Battle and Rumble Arena. We all lost interest in this game except for the youngest 2. They kept playing because they were determined to see the digimon digivolve. They beat the game. We never learned how to digivolve. We assumed there was no digivolution mechanic and wrote this game off forever.
youtubers like this are the reason digimon will never try and make another action rpg or decent world title, us real digidestined know any digimon content at this point is a godsend.
That makes no sense at all. If you tell a company that you love a bad product, they'll keep giving you bad products. Especially if they are cheap. Thats an exect's wet dream. Instead, they could just put the time, effort, and budget into making the awesome action rpg D.igimon game fans want (and deserve) and recieve the praise that comes with it.
This game came out over 10 years ago. This makes no sense at all. A Fan of a series can critique it not just accept anything the brand puts out. What you're confusing is the critique of a game and a personal attack on your attachment with a brand.
I enjoy this game as kid n finished it till very hard difficulty and getting multiple digivolution, though i used guide at that time. I'm trying played it again as adult few years ago, still like it but i hate the grinds and resort to cheats.
Digimon world 4 is simply not a digimon game. Now it has stained the franchise forever. More than anything it feels like this game should've been an original title, but got abandoned, and then remade into this using digimon assets and new plotline.

This is the second review where i hear that the enemy are the same indipendently of player number, but i remember that with a second player i got like 30% more enemy. It was mine impression?
for real though i love the early game, it was probably the sound effects and post game systems for grinding that made it so enticing. although they were poorly implemented and there was no real purpose all the dungeons past dry desert were pretty ass with no redeeming features whatsoever lol it was just cute to play digimon with swords and a long co op game to pass the time our parents didnt have for us yknow
while you talked about many parts of the game that were not up to par you forgot the biggest malus of them all.....the loading screens in this game.... walking through the city once took like 10 mins just to change gear or evolve....if you ever walked wrong that means another 3 loading screens. at least 5 minutes gone. they were HORRENDOUS
Yeah. That was especially bad for me with my awful sense of direction. Though I could have sworn that I alluded to that issue, but it's been a while so maybe not.

@@InfiniteComboReviews It didn't, it was more of an insult to fans. They ruined the game out of greed and made the old game unplayable. There are many videos about WC3 reforged on youtube if you are curious.
Yeah, tried to give this video a chance, but after hearing "it's not great" in reference to the music, I just can't. You can dislike a game and overall not recommend it while still being fair to it's good qualities.
Thats a fair point and I try to do in every review, but thing is that the music isn't great. It's average at best and gets highly overshadowed by the sound effects so it loses a lot of its impact.
I tried this recently. Yeah single player a lot of kiting. World hub is way too huge. You take damage by touching other digimon. Positioning yourself sucks. Your range sucks. Everything is a spam fest. It would be a really cool game if things died in meaningful times and the souls aspect was ripped from the game.
@@InfiniteComboReviews I couldn't even figure out how to get my stuff back cuz I couldn't make it anywhere without dying. If you are going to be a souls like, it needs to be free and obtainable, not GG your 98% progress.

@@InfiniteComboReviews All fair points.
I own a handful of other Digimon games that I just haven't gotten to yet since Digimon as a whole is a franchise I want to review on this channel along with many others so I probably won't get to them anytime soon, but I am looking forward to playing them.@@ronstarbuck3478
9:17 enemy count changes based on player count. Me and my cousin played this game since I owned it on ps2 and the first thing I noticed was a third goburimon in the beginning area that wasn't there in single player (at the first u-turn up to the box that always spawns a hp chip)
You sure about that? During editing I was literally looking at the footage side by side to confirm that it was the same. Maybe its not consistent.
@@InfiniteComboReviews it was very notable and consistent, at least on black border ps2 pal version
Understandable. It really helps to have a group of friends to plow through this game

Digimon: 2:19
If only Pokemon understood.
The ones that did hate the game wasn’t gamers or put time into the game like most people who like quick games to play this ya had to put a lot of time in
Hard disagree. I like long games and we beat this for the review plus I replayed it solo past the first major boss and I still didn't enjoy this game.
But hands down I love the open world digimon games but a digimon world 5 With great game play and all digimon evolutions and skills would be great!!!! Also I flying mechanic for most Digimon
I wonder if we'll ever get an actual Digimon World 5.
I thought you unlocked a special digivolution at lvl 16, which you don't need to do a side quest for. Thanks for the review, I'm still looking forward to playing lol.
No, sadly you don't. I hope you enjoy it!
@@InfiniteComboReviewsHave you tried talking to the DigiLab attendant? Thanks! I hope your time with it wasn't too traumatic.
@@InfiniteComboReviews Yeah, the game definitely feels like it just wasn't designed for solo play.
@@growasowa3444 I feel like it was designed with the idea that players will play on thier own and then bring thoer files to friends houses for harder fights or something like that.

@@growasowa3444 True true. After me and my friends beat the game, I went back and beat the first major boss solo with a fresh character and it seemed much harder. Particularly against hordes.
I remember buying this as a kid for the soul reason to Digivolve and... lets just say without UA-cam this was a impossible feat.
I literally thought something was gonna change after like holding swords and stuff. I was godly hoping. Absolutely dissapointed.
I understand that.
I remember playing this game but when I didn't see anyone talking about it I started to think that it might have been a figment of my imagination.
Saw it on store shelves as a kid and it always sat there in the back of my mind until I played it as an adult.
I wouldn't say worse, but it was poorly made thinking about the solo gameplay and the evolution mechanic, otherwise it's a good game
What would you say is the worst Digimon game?
Being a digimon game, and I was expecting that I could evolve agumon back then, I stick with the game for a while waiting for that sweet evolution before I eventually dropped it and here I am finding out about the fact that you don't actually evolve them...
No, no. You CAN Digivolve everyone, it's just that the process is so convoluted and counter productive that it's not even worth it
"The amount of enemies that swarm you don't change based on the number of friends you have." That is fundamentally UNtrue.
Clearly I didn't explain this well enough. Good catch.

Digimon World Data Squad review is not coming to fight for the podium?
Haven't played it.....YET! But now you have me worried.
Oof. Yeah. I get that. I had to watch a youtube video just to learn how to Digivolve and noped right out of there.

Digimon world 4 is simply not a digimon game. Now it has stained the franchise forever. More than anything it feels like this game should've been an original title, but got abandoned, and then remade into this using digimon assets and new plotline.
