      How to capture milky-way in a little light pollution? What's the proper setting?

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  4 роки тому +1

      Book a plan ticket to a dark spot. It doesnt happy. That's why it's called light pollution unfortunately. Maybe try a light pollution filter. But it depends how bad your area is.

      Hi! Thank you for this video but I'm still confused.
      I'm so new to this I don't fully understand.
      Do we really need to buy an additional lens kit to get good results?
      I plan to photograph the night sky with xt3 as well as the northern lights along with us in the subject .
      Would that work?
      Also your links are down like the fuji best night lens link.

  • @1972Russianwolf

    Just an FYI, The focus ring on that lens isn't mechanical. If you get your infinity focus during daytime, switch to manual focus, turn the camera off and remove the lens. you can then twist the focus ring all you want it won't effect the focus. When you get to your site, Attach lens, power on and you are ready to shoot.
    Your tape may only confuse you if you depend on it and the ring gets moved while in your bag. you would need to realign before powering the camera back on, or you will move your focus.
    The tape trick works wonderfully on lenses with mechanical focus rings (meaning they change the lens focus with or without power).

      Dearly noted thank you so much :D Dont use this lens much for night photography usually only manual focus lenses

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  4 роки тому

      Thanks nate I am glad that youve enjoyed it and hopefully learnt something!
      I would using a second shutter speed at f3.5 at 18mm. Then, depending how much light was around from the moon an iso value of 6400.
      The longest shutter speed you can do is 18seconds before the stars move, thats why I suggest 15seconds then if its to bright reduce the ISO value :)
      Hope this helps, email me if you ever need further advice :)

However, what I would recommend is going out on a 30-50% moon this will help bring some light into the image and help you light up the foreground. Only way I am sorry Night Photography depends a lot on the type of gear you have. Goodluck

      Hey, ahh not 100% sure as I have never used it. but I would head out and try it out! Go out with say a 40-60% moon and this will help you light the foreground up naturally and not increase so much noise :D

    Waiting for my xt4 to arrive today. Photopills app closest option appears to be xt3. As there is no option for xt4 should I click xt3. ? At the moment I can only use xf 18-135mm F3.5-5.6. I guess I will go for 18mm @ F3.5. I haven't done astrophotography before so it will be interesting to see how I get here in London 🙂

    Hey Matt, did you stack these images together afterwards? I'm intrigued how you got your final result with you in the image? I'm presuming you didn't increase your depth of field? Was the subject (You) slightly out of focus?

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  4 роки тому +1

      Nope, I didnt stack anything. True the human (me) is not perfectly sharp and in a more 'professional' way I would be stacking them. I will get in more detail about this on future vlogs. this was just more basic :D

      @@matthewstorerphotography Thanks for the reply! It's not often a popular UA-camr actually responds lol.... So in your final image, have you left a light on to paint yourself into the image or something or does the camera just pick up with the headlamp on alone? I'm sorry if I sound like a complete novice but I'm afraid I am!
      I've seen images of night photography with foreground illuminations and reflections on lakes etc but whenever I've done anything in the dark I've had to light paint it into the image so it's baffling me how people get a foreground and other subjects other than the milkyway etc!

    Hi there - just came across this video and it was great . I really enjoy doing exactly this; but I am in a budget. My current dilemma is upgrading my camera - I’m currently debating between a canon rebel and the 5d mark ii. Any advice please ? Thanks in advance

    Hello Matthew, great video. Absolutely love the detail description. I am currently on a canon eos rebel sl3 kit lens which is 18-55 f/4-5.6. What should be my settings to click such brilliant images like yours. Thank you for your help mate. Cheers!

    Thank you so much for that video! Noticed it accidentally in the feed and now subscribed and watching other videos :) I am really new to cameras and stuff, I am basically at the start of my journey, and seeing that you can get that even with a kit is so encouraging!
    I have Canon 80D with 18-55mm kit lens, so I definitely want to give it a try now! Just need to understand where and when I need to be to see something like that :) still struggling with understanding that :)
    Thank you so much, fantastic video!

    Hi, Matt, I have a Nikon D5600 with the standard kit lens, and I have a Tamron 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 The kit lens is 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 .I have started to shoot the milky way since this springtime. I get some noise in the images sometimes. I do not do hardly any editing, not familiar enough to do that except an occasional edit with Nikon NXD free editing that I use. My question though is what and HOW do I figure out for my camera the 500 rule?? A neighbor friend also mentioned a 400 rule to use also?? My Nikon camera is cropped?? Do we have to use 1.5 in the math?? At some point would like to purchase a full frame camera, with a 2.8 lens and wide angle like 10mm. Would like to know the math on how to get the 500 rule.
    Thank You So Much. Cheers. PS> We live in Northeastern Minnesota, next to Lake Superior. I did have taken several hundred images so far. Very exciting.

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  4 роки тому

      Super nice mate! Yeah the 500 rule would become 10mm x 1.5 cop = 15mm then you can use the 500/15mm and it will get you 33.33 seconds for the shutter speed. But using a new rule it gets you closer back to 22 seconds. So I would shoot around the 20-30 second (unless you have a remote to use 33 seconds) and this should be ok!
