Hey folks - I just created a new step-by-step video on using PhotoPills to Plan a Milky Way image that is updated for 2020: ua-cam.com/video/YKRNAPIRQtU/v-deo.html if you want to check it out. It just focuses on PhotoPills, whereas Part 1 of this Milky Way series goes into more detail about all aspects of Milky Way planning.
Yup, you were right. There are a lot of videos about Milky Way Photography. You are also correct that you actually explain this so I actually understand. To top it all off you actually explained PhotoPills better than they do in their 60 minute video. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the high compliments, Joe! Glad you found the info to be helpful. Took me forever to figure out PhotoPills, but I'm so glad I finally did! Very robust.
At first I found PhotoPills confusing. I am a relative newbie to photography. But taking the time to read the articles, download and read the ebooks, watch the tutorials and try practical shots, paid dividends. So worth the investment in $$$ time and energy. Plus I have never had such prompt, detailed, passionate support from any app of any kind as I have from the guys at PhotoPills. Eg Same day detailed reply to help me actually plan a super moon shot due in just 48 hours! Best value app I’ve ever come across. Thanks for adding some more clarity though. Great video. For the record the guys at PhotoPills freely acknowledge their expertise is more in the technical development - less in the instruction - and are reshooting a lot of their videos in response. Can’t ask for much more than that IMO. 🙂
On the strength of this video I purchased PhotoPills. Still to plan first shoot but learning toward an old abandoned RAF base. Wish me luck. PS subbed to you too. Brilliant channel Thank you
@@voicesfrombeyond1631 Trial and error is the best teacher. There are so many variables like clouds, light pollution, moon and many surprises like the police showing up wondering what you are doing stalking around a park after dark. Good luck.
This video should be part of teacher training curriculum . As a retired teacher and an amateur landscape photographer i was begining to feel stupid and finding it difficult to grasp this astrophotography . Everything about this tutorial top notch. Thank you and well done.
As a Rutlander now living in CO I'm envisioning a trip to include the Milky Way using some old barns etc in the composition. Good to get your confirmation that VT is still dark enough for such a shot. Great video.
When I first started Photoshop I remember trying to do Composites and I had these tutorials and I had just learned photography I was still learning my exposure triangle. I mean I was as green as the grass on a hot summer day. But it took me I think like 2 weeks which is comical because I used to be an electrical engineer, but it took me 2 weeks to grasp the concept of a layer and a layer mask. And finally somebody did a tutorial with two sheets of paper and explained that the top sheet of paper is like the layer and if you were to draw through it that's the mask. It was something so simple they gave me that haha moment. I know his teachers we can kind of overdo it when we explain things and sometimes it's just good to simplify things. But, I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to make all these videos. I used to have a UA-cam channel myself and I know that it's very time consuming not only to shoot the videos but to do the editing process and you always run into a hundred problems whether the phone rings somebody knocks at the door your computer freezes up and crashes and you lose all your work. It could be a hundred things and these things do happen. But thank you thank you thank you for taking the time out of your life and your day. Time is the most precious thing in the world and you give it up to help us out. I don't want to say thank you for that
My gosh. You hiked 4 miles in total just to show us how to plan these things... Hats off to you. You are such a passionate person. Thank you so much for all these
I have watch almost all milky way photography videos but didn't understand anything , now this makes me understood everything. Very informative and thankyou so much.
I agree with the follower that said you explained how to use PhotoPills better than their own video guides!I tried and just did not stick. Love your enthusiasm. Thank you very much.
I've had PhotoPills on my phone for 6 months and it always gave me the heebie jeebies, closing the app in disgust. This is by far the best tutorial out there and I will watch it again and again until I get it right. Well Done Brenda!!!
Thanks so much, Dennis! I'm doing a series on how to learn PhotoPills (the basics, sun, moon, etc.) if you want to learn more: bit.ly/PhotoPillsFridaySeason1
Watched this last night. You explained Photopils perfectly Brenda. Better than anyone else that I have seen. Going to do some Milky Way shooting Mother's Day week. Probably watch this another 10 times. Thank you. Scott.
@Nick Ferdinande My suggestion is pick a brand and stick with them. Ultimately you should consider lens selection and pricing. It's hard to suggest anything without knowing a budget but don't forget, people have produced incredible astro photos long before we had these fancy digitals. You don't need to spend a million dollars to get good photos. Find a local camera shop or an online place like lens rentals and rent a few bodies from different manufacturers and see which one you like best. If you're really wanting to focus on astro, don't get a crazy high mp camera. 24mp is just fine. The more dynamic range the better. I'm using a Sony A7Rii which does decent. If I were to buy a second body, I'd probably go for the 24mp A7iii.
Thank you for this video. I found it very clear and concise for planning milky way 🌌 photos. I've used the app a while now and very comfortable with being able to place a moon over a given subject and have got some lovely full moon photos over water towers etc. I learnt all that from yourself so obvious channel to come back to for milky way planning. Thank you very much for the brilliant videos you made on photopills.
This is just about the best tutorial about photographing the Milky Way - in fact, probably the best series pertaining to astrophotography - that I’ve seen in the past five years. Outstanding! Most video tutorials are more about selling than teaching, but this series goes into considerable detail in a well-planned, logical sequence. It’s easy to follow, simple to understand, and it’s not packed with a lot of self-serving hyperbola and nonsense. Thank you for the excellent presentations. My congratulations: I’m impressed! Well done!
Thank you so much for such a great explanation on how to use Photopills. I downloaded the app the other day and trying to watch their videos is a little difficult, but you knocked it out of the park on how to use it. This app is great and so are you! thanks again.
Thanks so much for this video. I got photoPills 6 months ago and never understood how to use it. Your video explains it perfectly. I just purchased a new lens and am going out to shoot my first MilkyWay this week. Cant wait to try it out
So far, after watching maybe a dozen videos on PhotoPills, I lucked into your video. Your delivery is great and it was easy to follow your video with a few stops to go back and watch a section again. I feel like I can now start using the app, there is so much content in this little app it is overwhelming when you don't know where to start.
THANKS! This is really great - BEST explanation I have found of Photo Pills for the purpose of planning for the Milky Way photos (although when following along, I could not get the gray concentric circles and little white balls etc to show up at all - must be a setting elsewhere?). **EDIT** Found it: Gotta tap the Milky Way ICON (not the photo one) on another top panel. This whole little 1-2-3 series is terrific -- Thank you, Brenda!
Thanks. I was introduced to PhotoPills just yesterday. It’s an exciting app. Your introduction was very clear and useful. I can’t wait to try it out here in the Southern Hemisphere.
That's great - I'm glad it helped! I'm just in the middle of creating a series on how to use PhotoPills, called PhotoPills Friday, if you want to check it out and learn more.
This is by far the simplest explanation of Photopills on the planet. Well constructed, thought out presentation and demonstration. Cant believe you hiked 2 miles for us. Thank you so much, and great use of the word "Buggers" A right good Scottish word for all wee fidgety things. Where is your Milky Way photograph?
Haha - glad I used "buggers" correctly! :) And very glad you enjoyed the video and PhotoPills explanation. I show a planned MW shot in Part 3 with a short timelapse, if you want to check that out.
I watched all 3 videos---Thanks Brenda for all of your advice and time. It gave a Milky Way rookie like me a shot at success my first time out which will be soon.
Big Thank you Brenda!!! Learned a lot. Have been using Photopills for some basic stuff but after going through this tutorial I will be using this app for planning my Milky Way shots. Keep up the good work. Stay safe and take care :)
Excellent and very helpful video. You are absolutely right when you say there are not many videos talking about "how to plan" an astrophotography night.
Stumbled upon this recently and learned so much. This is one of the most comprehensive tutorials for someone who has never done astrophotography before. If I get a good picture in the coming weeks, it will be thanks to you!
Hey, this is the best tutorial / information one can refer to who is new to both Photopills and milky way photography. As you rightly mentioned the app is robust but not easy to understand and navigate. Thanks to you who made it simple to understand. Cheers!
OPS - You are so wonderful to share your info. I'm INSPIRED!! We're planning a Fall Milky Way photo shoot and we're prepping using alot of your wonderful advise and camping attire. Please keep on KEEPING ON!! Love it. Love. It. ALL.
So glad to have found you, Brenda. Your explanation of Photo Pills is so very helpful, and I can understand your conversation a whole lot easier than the nice gentleman from PhotoPills. Am looking forward to the other chapters in your series.
Hi Brenda, Your tutorial was perfect. I did have to pause, and back up and re-view a couple of times, but that's what's great about UA-cam. I am getting into the Milky Way game a bit late in the year, but I"ll be ready to roll in spring thanks to you. I've also started following you on Instagram. Super explanation. Love Vermont. So much more in photo pils than I ever realized. The two white lines are a bit confusing. But the elevation and azimuth and time of rising are invaluable. 😀
You rock! I'm going on my 1st Milky Way shoot at the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado for three nights of camping, and you just helped make it successful for me. Thank you so much!
Just a quick point, just because the app shows a full moon it doesn’t mean there is no shot to be had, the moon could well set early or rise late and open up an opportunity for a Milky Way shoot. Great video, another sub gained.
I just loved it. First I thought what the hell was this app, but the more I dive in it the more interesting it got. Thankyou for this amazing series. I learned alot 🙏
Happy to help! And I'm doing a series on how to use PhotoPills in more detail if you want to check it out further: ua-cam.com/play/PLJTYzXcZmD3inopm-ACkBpE3OtsrEJgkl.html
I just purchased Photo Pills and BAM! a whole world opened before my eyes! lol It will be very useful on my trip to the Outer Hebrides, Scotland in August. Thank you Brenda :) Claudia, Italy.
Awesome! If you want to learn more about PhotoPills, I just finished up a whole free video series on how to learn the app called PhotoPills Friday. Here's a link to Season 1: bit.ly/PhotoPillsFridaySeason1
Hello Brenda. I downloaded PhotoPills and it looks an excellent App. Your 17 minute video took me closer to about 45-60 minutes to watch as I kept going back and forth following the app and the delivery was a little fast but still good. Don't get me wrong your explanation was pretty good my 1 major critique is with the date. When you press the moon image in the planner the date in the bottom right changes but you can't go back unless you slide the moon phase at the bottom and that takes ages, I did find out how to reset the date though. I ended up in March 2019 and I couldn't figure out where I went wrong. Minor critiques are explaining that you need to press on icons in order to activate them get to the same screen as you. Looking forward to Geminids this weekend (UK). Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
Genial. Fantástico vídeo. Great, fantastic video. It is wonderful to know that there are people in another part of the world, that we share the same hobby. a very warm hug from the Canary Islands.☺️
Perfect timing Brenda! I just got Photopills a few weeks ago and played with it some while we were in Colorado Springs. I kind of figured it out but because I knew I wasn't gonna be able to get a milky way shot where we were staying because of the lights anyway I told myself I'd figure it out later but you just showed me how and I'd just like to say............Thanks!
This was really useful for a newbie to night sky photography and Photopills like me. Thank you for a very clear and intelligible guide - the best I've found.
This is a really great video, I've had Photopills for a while but didn't really understand how to use it properly until I watched this. Thank you. Great job.
You're very welcome! If you want to learn more about PhotoPills beyond Milky Way planning, I'm doing a series on how to learn the app called PhotoPills Friday: ua-cam.com/play/PLJTYzXcZmD3inopm-ACkBpE3OtsrEJgkl.html.
Thank you sooo much Brenda - I'm a landscape photographer in Iowa (Fairfield) and just beginning using PhotoPills. Any additional videos other than your own applying to PP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again - great video series. Joseph
Glad it was helpful! I'm putting together a short video series on how to use PhotoPills since so many people found the tips in this video helpful - so stay tuned!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video - I learned a lot, and appreciate the insight into using the PhotoPills app; it makes a lot more sense now - well done!
I absolutely loved this series! By far the most comprehensive (you've thought of everything!) and easiest to understand tutorial. Best Photopills tutorial I've seen as well. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with us - you're a great teacher, Brenda!! Now to watch all your other videos! x
Frank in Kilkenny south east of Ireland. Just beginning my outdoor night photography adventure. Thank you so much for the wonderful Video. Keep up the good work.
This is just a great video. Not only taught me how to use PhotoPills for exactly what I wanted (new moon, shooting tonight), but I love the hike. Thanks for the maple syrup tips :-)
Hello Brenda, I have been a photo buff for yrs & recently retired so I have time to explore different shots..Night shots have been on my radar so I have watched your videos & planning my Milky Way Adventure..I bought PhotoPills app & you do a great job explaining..I live in NW Phoenix so I will have to drive a bit to get out of the light pollution..I am working out the details now for my future shoot..Kudos to for your efforts..Thank you as you explain very well..Just my $0.02 Ken

I’ve only just now discovered Photo Pills and your channel. Thank you so much for the in depth instructions! Your videos are amazing!
I watched all 3 videos---Thanks Brenda for all of your advice and time. It gave a Milky Way rookie like me a shot at success my first time out which will be soon.

Excellent and very helpful video. You are absolutely right when you say there are not many videos talking about "how to plan" an astrophotography night.
Very glad to hear you enjoyed it and that the video was helpful!
Stumbled upon this recently and learned so much. This is one of the most comprehensive tutorials for someone who has never done astrophotography before. If I get a good picture in the coming weeks, it will be thanks to you!
I hope you do! May you have clear skies ahead!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a clear, understandable way!
Yay! Enjoy and that's for making my day!
Your explanation was better than any other.
Thanks for the detailed information and the interesting videos.
Will keep following.
Just a quick point, just because the app shows a full moon it doesn’t mean there is no shot to be had, the moon could well set early or rise late and open up an opportunity for a Milky Way shoot. Great video, another sub gained.
Thanks! And I totally agree.

Best explanation of photopills I have seen on the internet. I love your illustrations and keep doing this Brenda Petrella.
Awesome video for Photocells planning thanks
Great explanation of one way to use Photopills, which is an awesome, but somewhat complicated, app. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful, Rob!
Thank you, thank you. I love Photo Pills, but I hate their videos. You explain Photo Pills much better in your video.

Very helpful. This video is brilliantly done. One I keep coming back to. Thanks so much 😊❤️🏴
Best demo of this app I have seen, much better than fotopills own videos. Thank you for sharing this with us.

This was great and awesome to see some Vermont wilderness. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!

Fantastic vídeo Brenda!
Thanks so much for checking it out!
Great tutorial. Very clear directions. Thanks
Just getting into photography. Purchased Photopills. You've almost certainly saved me days or weeks getting started with the app. Thanks!
That's great news -- more time doing photography, less time pulling out your hair ;).
Excellent tutorial, Brenda...thank you!
Terrific! I'm so glad! :)
Just getting started, your video was super helpful, thank you.
Many thanks for explaining this Brenda, I'm now ready to do some Milky Way photography of the south coast of England.
