The first time I heard this song was in the clip of Kelly singing it at the American Idol series finale. As a girl having no father growing up really in your life it really affects you. And it's hard to really describe if you did have your father growing up. It's like you always feel like you weren't important enough for him to stick around all the time and you always feel like you weren't important enough or you weren't worthy enough to have your father's love. Then he tells you he loves you but you feel nothing and it is true my love isn't free it has to be earned. It's like when I heard it was like someone finally understands how it feels to be left by your father. It's just a great song and a great cover also.

I understand why my father is away. It's a need for the family, but the emotional effect to a daughter that barely had any positive affection from them is just torment. Always asking if I was/am anything to them, to him.

I was adopted by my aunt and uncle. My bio mom would have the audacity to call every now and then, have literally a 30 second conversation with me then want to talk to my aunt to ask for money. She lives back East, when we went to go see her about 8 years ago she literally looked through the blinds and refused to open the door. That was the final straw for me. Now she has me on Facebook, I video chatted with her once, but I don't really have much interest in having relationship with her. My bio dad at least puts in effort but he lives back East as well and isn't capable of taking care of his kids. It's unfortunate when the people who are supposed to love you the most disappoint you.

I loved this, this touched me in a personal way. My father AND mother abandoned me when i was 2, and know, 20 years later my father contacted me and said that it was all my fault and that he think he was a good father for me. Luckily i ended up in a family that loves me.

This song makea me cry everytime because about 18 years ago my dad abandoned me and never came back. My step dad took the place of my dad and I could havenever ask for anyone else but him and the sad part is that I wanted to go see my dad and ask him why he didn't want me but he died and I never got to tell him that I forgave him for what he did. But I forgave him in my heart 😥 💓
Just know none of that was your fault because it's not. Your birth parents decided on that. You did nothing wrong and didn't deserve that. Your birth parents are the one's to blame for what happened. You didn't ask for that to happen nor did you do anything bad for that to happen. I know you ended up with a family that loves you but still.
I'm so sorry, my bio dad has always tried to be there the best he could but he's an alcoholic and loves on the East coast. My bio mom on the other hand was a mess, she recently contacted me this year trying to pretend like nothing happened. I'm grateful that I have a loving family

this got to my heart.... my mom abandoned me when i was young and then my dad not long later, i was left with my nan and didn't see either of my parents for years..... and 2 years ago i found the most amazing guy ever who makes me feel more loved than either of my parents ever did..... this was beautiful, love this song, love kelly clarkson and love this cover

I remember when they first posted this, before I knew how much it would resonate with me. My dad was abusive and neglectful emotionally, and now that my parents divorced and all the ugliness came to light, I’m just here learning to be a man on my own and wondering why he never wanted me.
I’ll be better. Whatever it takes, I’ll never let my family wonder if I love them, if I’m blessed with a family of my own.

The thing I find so impressive about this is actually the video! The singing is very good too, but I love the creativity that this video displays. I would love to know how to make something like this.
They always do very creative videos, but on this one I really didn't like it. Don't get me wrong they did an amazing job, but this is an emotional song and I would've preferred to see them singing with raw emotion without any edits or collages

I relate to this song so much, my father stopped contact with me at 12 and im glad he did, as he wasnt a nice person, he was a negative person in which is why i have negative thoughts about myself, but my stepdad came into my life and helped me become the person i am today, i am 20 now and i wouldnt be at university if my father didnt stop contact, thats the only thing i am grateful of him for

My dad has left or family to many times I don’t have enough finger to count on. Kelly’s song really hit me because when I heard this song it wasn’t just about my dad it was about my friends and and my old life. Their cover is amazing I really loved it they seriously need a record label.

I listened to this when it was just a few weeks old, as I was clearing the garden of weeds. When I lived in my small home town. Since then, I've moved to a city. I've started a school I love, studying what I'm interested in. I've gotten new friends. Wonderful friends who are caring and funny and loving. So much has happened in two years. And I'm so glad to be back here now. Thank you for this video and the memories it's keeping for me.

I never heard that song before but I love it!
There's so much I want to say but let me just cut to the important ones. Kurt, your arrangement (especially the piano track) is so up there at the stratosphere. And the audio mixing...flipping skillful and ACCURATE. You couldn't have picked better sound effects. Just the right amount were added too. You picked the right vocalists to carry this song. I'm not a fan of Sam Tsui but the way he let the emotion and story to guide his vocal stirred something inside me. I could go on with the video as well but let's just say everything was nailed to perfection.
