- After the delivery and the handover week we're ready to test the boat for a couple of weeks. On the first trip O51 Spekeend joins us towards Rosas in Spain, we continue the next morning to Mallorca.
Nice to watch videos of sailing people who know what they are doing - and what a boat!!
for us it still feels like there's so much to learn but thanks anyway
Don't forget to put in your order for Christmas lighting for the boat. You start with Christmas and then buy more lights to celebrate New Years, then different lights for Valentines Day, and whatever national holidays you celebrate. My mom would celebrate Syttende Mai at the school she worked at in California.
Prachtige boot, goed in beeld gebracht!!
Congratulations guys! Im a big fan since the begining! Its great to listen your explanations now, and the music in this video is superb! Looking forward for the future vids! Safe travel and all the best always from Nico, your Argentinian fan!
Yes Nico you’ve been around for quite some time already. Thanks!
@@CatGreatcircle ❤️. The delivery of the new boat made me cry! Its my dream as well. Thanks for visualizing it in such a realistic way. We will meet One day. All the best!
Living isn't hard, hard is know how to live :D
Beautiful boat! Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I love drone shots of boats cruising thru a (not flat) sea so I can have some sense of how they would feel sailing. Thank you so much!
I’ve been following your videos for a long time, I even came across your L52 while you where in Crete, a few years ago. I didn’t dare to thank you for your videos at the time, neither did I take the time to drop a few lines since. As I don’t live far from LGM, I visited Outremer before the delivery of your boat, and I wanted to thank you for sharing your experiences so quickly with us: your drone images are just stunning, and your O55 looks so gorgeous ! Not only does she fly, but she looks very comfortable at all speeds… Enjoy your time in Mallorca-if you’re not back yet!
Thanks again, keep up the good work !
Yours,
Pascal.
Merci beaucoup, en LGM encore depuis hier soir
The sea is definitely less congested than the highway, then: tonight was dreadful southwards leaving LGM. O55: the fastest way to go from LGM to Mallorca and back in summer ! Fortunately, I was Northbound! Had I known, I would’ve stopped by to say Hi! Enjoy !
Allways ggod vibes watching you sailing, you share kinda calm energy.
I've seen you on many youtube videos, it's allways the same feeling.
Thank you,
God Speed.
Stéphane Filippi.
Absolutely beautiful SY, this Outremer 55, completely different to the former Lagoon 52, which was practical but by far not as performant and attractive. Congratulations.
Fair enough!
Beautiful images of a beautiful boat. Love your films. The boat speed is amazing and in such comfort.
Many thanks!
It is a great pleasure to see you sailing with this superb catamaran, much faster than the L52. We are waiting for the big trips.
This new Great Circle boat, Outremer 55, is really fantastic. I really want to watch the new videos of great ocean crossings made on this boat. Congratulations on this purchase. I already feel traveling together through the videos. Congratulations directly from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Wow!What a dream boat. She’s beautiful.
Great video!! Looking forward to riding along on your adventures.
Stunning boat, real quality, enjoy!
Fantastic. Had to watch a few times. Such a beautiful design.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Beautiful boat! Thank you for sharing your experiences as you become familiar with her.
Congratulations on the new boat!
I have been waiting with great anticipation for your first sail. I hope it was everything you wished for.
As always a very nice video well done 👍 love your beautiful new boat Cheers 🥂
Those lounge seats next to the helms - wow, that looks like an amazing place to relax !
Stunning boat, the living space looks so comfortable and the black sails are fab xxx
These are very good vlogs. Full of useful pieces of information for those of us planning a trip sometime in the future.
Nice first crossing guys!
It's great following you!
Such a stunning boat under sail and quick in the water. You will have many safe and speedy voyages. All the best to you and yours.
Good Luck whit yournew boat !!!
Nice to see your new Outremer 55 sailing. Thanks
The Gennaker is a dream - and the rest is just wow - (looks like you smoked the 51") have fun, thx for sharing and bringing a calm breeze to my desk.
Congratulations so much on the new boat. I just love this arrangement! You pay for the boat, you do all the work and I can enjoy it all from my couch. I still wish I was there though! ;-)) De beste ønsker fra en sofaseiler i Norge.
Tusen takk!
Another great video! I really like the headphone idea it makes a lot of sense, I could imagine how helpful it could be in many situations. I think I will always be envious of that nav station, it’s not only the the display and other equipment but the viewpoint you have, it’s a real control centre. So pleased for you it’s all going so well😃
So nice to see the cat in a more 'real' setting with all your belongings, looking lived in. Also great to see what it feels like in open water in a slightly rougher sea state. More inspired than ever to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for the great content! You're doing a fantastic job for Outremer too :)
Nice relaxing champagne sailing for a first shakedown cruise! Boat seems to handle very easily with just the two of you. Love the boat!
At first we were a bit overwhelmed but in the meantime it’s already getting more familiair and we’re just fine sailing the boat together
Hallo Ihr zwei, Well done, I'm happy for you, you have a really nice catamaran, I wish you a good time with it and I'm already looking forward to the next video .......
Happy you finally have your new GREATCIRCLE 🌊⛵️🏝👙🌞✨🎉🎉👍
Gefeliciteerd, prachtig schip!
nice couple, nice boat, is enjoying the good time ;-)
Thanks for taking us along on your journey. What a stunning boat. Love your colours.
Great to see your dreams come alive. It’s been a long journey watching the Great Circles project come to life. Fun to see the smiles on your faces while sailing. The video made it feel like I was sailing my new boat. Thanks for letting all of us aboard. I’m looking forward to all the adventures.
Hé that looks like Rocky! Thanks mate!
I feel this shortish sail for yourselves was satisfying. A little trepidation initially which is normal of course, when a challenge confronts you, act early, having time to think is wise.
Your boat is looking magnificent and you both are moving well within it.
I enjoy the thoughts you both voice and the subtitles, you are bringing us along.
And the journey continues.
Bons Ventos!
The Portuguese Wallaby Down Under
Beautiful!
Looks great guys. One day that'll be me.
Greatcircle is absolutely gorgeous! I really love it, but I have never sailed, so I don’t have any advice on how to do things. I watch to see people so happy 😀. I have horrible motion sickness from many movements, so nothing under 300 meters for me.
Fantastic to enjoy yourself only. I wait here in Marbella to say good by and good winds in your way to the strait
Beautiful boat
Beautiful sail.
Congratulations guys, so great to see you back on the water in such a beautiful boat. Interesting shots with the square spinnaker. I would think if you look at the polars on a fast cruising cats such as great Circle you would be better using the code D and running the downwind angles. On our 5X this gives a better VMG downwind. Keep the great videos coming locked down in Australia we are living the curiously through your films.😀✌️ fair winds, Bill
We’re still building our polars (and finding out how to sail the boat) so will keep you posted on the dead downwind versus angles comparison. For the trade winds flying the little spi without a main might be an option
Great first sail and the boat is fast! I like that the boat is silent when underway and I hope it stays this way. Regarding the spinnaker - as some have suggested in the comments the problem is that its bottom is quite high above the deck, so the sail has a lot of freedom to move from side to side when there are waves. I don't think that there is an easy solution to that problem. Reducing or dropping the main will probably make the boat even more unstable and there will be more wind reaching the spinnaker, making its movement more violent. And lowering the spinnaker is not great either, because the correct shape for this sail is achieved when it soars up and high, not when it is tightly attached to bows. There are limitations to the use of this sail, and one is sea state and you will probably figure out those limitations after getting more experience with the sail in different conditions.
Lovely film.
Eindelijk de vrijheid... Weer lekker zeilen
Thanks for sharing
Love that shade of red on your spinnaker.
yes it turned out pretty nice, difficult to be sure when you put it on a piece of paper
Cheers to the Flying Dutchies..
Looks like you were having a lot of fun on this voyage.
Sure!
Too cool.
Oh boy! I am first! Fabulous vessel!
Good job 😎!
great build, inspires real confidence to stretch those sea legs
plenty of opportunity for that in the upcoming 30.000 miles
Nice vid. I would think you need a spinnaker pole on leeward to hold the spinnaker, although now it is more common to have a beauprès for simplicity with a different sail shape. Enjoy your sailing.
We use to sail with another cat using a pole and it did work on his boat. We would prefer not to have a pole. So we’ll try to optimise it with the main and/or sail it without the main
Super Boat 🚀
Third, just like your boat, after the Lagoon 39, the 52 , now the third, the most desired the OM 55
Beautiful "De Koffie is klaar" as a kid on my parents' boat we used to sail from England to spend our holidays sailing in Holland...Great memories ...50 years ago! Are your lifelines tight enough? One looked like it could do with adjustment. Great looking boat!
For using the symmetrical spinnaker, drop your main. You will experience higher speeds and easier sail handling.
You lucky people, beautiful yacht ! Tell us about your mistakes and pitfalls so we too can learn.
Yes we always do. One pitfall noted already is the Esthec fake teak. It looks great even if the subcontractor who installed it has room for improvement. But it gets soooooo hot in the sun that we should have taken another solution. The lighter Esthec colour like on 55#3 Zapoli is cooler but we liked this colour better.
@@CatGreatcircle thanks, that’s the sort of info that is helpful for other to know about 👍. Thank you for your video.
When sailing with your symmetrical spinnaker you should just take your mainsail down. It doesn’t add much speed but without it your solar panels would not be shaded so much.
yes this seems to be a good idea and it's made for heavy duty but the question is until what level will the mast be happy with this setup. If you look at the official statements of @lorima only up to windspeeds where it doesn't even make sense to put it out there.
I must have watched hundreds of hrs of sailing channels. You are less flashy and more genuine. Also I do like the fact that you avoid commercials during the clip. These interruptions tear apart the whole feeling and atmosphere, and make many otherwise great clips almost unwatchable. So, thank you for your effort.
I hate those mid-roll adds but when I use copyrighted music it can also be out of my control on my video’s
Congratulations on the new boat. I noticed you had a good selection of downwind sails. Was wondering if a parasailor would work on a cat like this? Looking forward to your future videos.
We had a Wingaker on the Lagoon and decided to use a big asymmetric A2 of a similar size on this one and a smaller heavy duty symmetrical one
Well done and great video.... You have an vacant hull that could accommodate a guess ... I'm available, just saying of course !!
😎 you mean the hull of Tina and Benjamin?
Beautiful yacht guys...I noticed on the vid that in the short waves there was a lot of porpoising happening...what was the cabin ride quality like..
The short waves aren’t any fun on this boat either but the movement is more limited and there’s no noise coming from the interior
What an awesome cat! Quick question - at the Nav station you have an LG monitor. Is that connected to your B&G wirelessly or is it directly wired into a multifunction screen?
It’s directly connected with a hdmi cable (or is it an hdmi cable when you’re in France) to the port cockpit plotter
What a beauty, but the red spinnaker locks very shacky, also thought about parasailor or wingaker?
We had a Wingaker before and decided we don’t really want it anymore. Not a lot of those sails survived the Atlantic crossing
Just wondering why you chose the downwind gennaker out of LGM as opposed to the A2. Wind angle perhaps or baby steps with the new boat. Great story telling
We bought the A2 later, the idea was to have a bit of overlap between code 0, gennaker and A2 in case one of the sails breaks during our world tour.
👍👍👍👍🍾
Thank you for the information, it will surely be useful to us. how many days did it take you to travel from the BVI to the Azores?
15 including 2 days drifting at zero knots waiting for the 85 knots depression to pass north of us. Staying on the southern side as you’re planning to might be wise depending on the period when you’re going to cross. On the other hand, the forecasts for a couple of days ahead are normally pretty reliable so you can also look for some wind with an potential escape to the south in the back of your mind
@@CatGreatcircle thank you!! fair winds and followings seas
Hopefully in the future cameras can accurately portray the size of the waves, they look smaller than actual.
At those downwind speeds I was waiting for this comment " the captain wants to water ski". How about booming out the main to help fill the spinnaker.
Congratulations guys. This was a great video and I’m so jealous you are up and running. I still have 19 months to wait for my Seawind 1600. I absolutely love that huge LG screen. How is that configured to to your B&G system? Is it a PC or something?
Hi David, the LG is just a monitor with 2 hdmi inputs, 1 connected to 1 of the BandG plotters in the cockpit and the other to my laptop for editing. Works great.
@@CatGreatcircle Congrats - boat is looking terrific. I was also curious about the B&G Display on a regular monitor - excellent idea. Just to confirm there is an HDMI out on the B&G Plotter - is that correct.
Correct
Looking pretty smooth sailing! How is she handling overall? Any major differences from your old boat to the new one?
We have to work harder as there a more sail changes. With the Lagoon we often had to choose a course that suited our code 0
@@CatGreatcircle Cool good to know! More sails means more options though??
Good Day! And a Good sailing for your team!
You change a few boats. And as I can understand you got a lot of experience in sail. Can you tell your opinion about SILENT YACHT 55 - solar catamaran - because it's almost at the same budget as a new perfomance catamaran.
Silent yacht doesn’t have sails or? Our cat is already silent enough 🤣😎
@@CatGreatcircle I mean that averege speed with sails on a week distanse - is almost the same as on solar catamaran (as manufactor told)
That's why I asked. Maybe you looked or research that type of catamaran?
Hallo wie habt Ihr das mit dem Bildschirm gemacht? In dem Film (7:27) sieht man das Ihr auf den Plotter bzw. B&G System zugreifen könnt. Was benötigt man dafür?
Plotter, Bildschirm, HDMI Kabel und BandG Control device
Hi, congratulations on the new boat. We have a Lagoon 52 F. and I wanted to ask you where did you put the additional diesel for the crossings on your Lagoon? How many liters could you carry? Thanks in advance.
Why would you need extra diesel, you’re already carrying 1000 liters…., the thingie on the frontside of your flybridge is a mast, you can hoist a big cloth up there usually called a sail
@@CatGreatcircle I hadn't thought about sailing, thanks for the advice 👍🏻
@@meolo64 a transat on a 52 will take 16-18 days, on one engine you use 5 l/h to go around 6 knots when there is no wind at all. In addition you will probably use 5-7 liters per day for the genset. It took us 16 days with 13 hours of motoring so we ended up with about 850 liters on the other side. You really don’t need additional diesel
@@CatGreatcircle thanks, in fact I was asking for the return from the Caribbean
Which route would you follow? To the Azores in the right period should be a little shorter even and from the Azores to either Portugal, France or the Uk is only a couple of days to a week. The weather might be less consistent but still I don’t see a need for extra diesel
Schitterend, gefeliciteerd! Ik zie dat jullie de Franse vlag(getje) nog voeren. Hoe gaan jullie de NL registratie regelen? Kadasterman laten komen? Vr.groeten, happy sailing! Rogier en Sisca, sy Waterval
Nee blijft Franse vlag met NL vlag in top
You mentioned that the size in a harbour is "a little bit scary". Which is why many opt for a smaller cat, like 45 or 48. Could you pls elaborate on that topic. Thanx Oliver
Hi Oliver, I think it’s not the size it’s more the way the berths are setup in the Marina of LGM. There’s very often a decent 90 degrees cross wind on the outer pontoon P and the spot at Pontoon Q can be challenging as well. Wouldn’t matter a lot if we still had our Lagoon 39 here.
In addition we’re always on anchor, we don’t like being in a marina anyway, but therefore we’re also lacking regular practice
You have gone from a catamaran designed, perhaps with comfort being a higher priority than performance, have you noticed / missed anything yet from your 52S that the Outremer cannot provide, larger cabins for a start. Later on I will be curious what your comfortable speed will be on a ocean crossing and how that compares with the 52S.
As always stay safe and keep having fun.
Hi Glen, until now we didn’t miss anything really. We have to be a bit more careful with the tender compared to the massive Highfield 390. It looks like the ocean crossing averages per day will be between 225 and 250 nm instead of 190 - 200
@@CatGreatcircle With, perhaps, a few more smiles ....
If you leave some slack at the top of the symmetrical It should handle the waves better without collapsing.
So lower, pull the guys tighter?
Maybe try to reef the main a bit when flying the spinnaker
Ha! Drop or reef the mainsail when using the symmetrical, would be my advice.
Yes we did that on the way back from Mallorca with just a little bit of wind. With more wind it’s a comforting idea to be able to get it down behind the main if the wind suddenly increases
@@CatGreatcircle feels safe, but increases risk of gybe... there are better ways to depower the asym?
@@circumnavigation9386 yes probably even rolling out the jib will help
And then there is the returning discussion of whether the forces on the mast are ok without the main. Difficult to judge as the official statements seem to be focused more on responsibility than on reasonable maxima
It looked like you were pointing to much into the wind for the spinnaker to work properly and your main sail was sheeted in all the way. The cut looks to be a down wind sail, not a reacher. If you have enough aparent wind than you can point higher and sheet in quite a bit more but then you would have to probably switch to a reaching sail so the luff doesn't luff.
TWA was 164 degrees as you can see somewhere in the 13th minute that’s not really an option for the gennaker
Does The Sailing Family have the same brand of catamaran? Theirs is good for racing, but they are a family of five from the USA.
Yes they have the same brand
Maybe a wisker pole
Are black sails less UV proof?
That might be true. For the DFI sails it should be ok during our 3 year trip, but we have to be careful with the D4 of the Code 0. On the L52S we had the same and we had holes in it within a year. We left it always up at first without a cover. Now we take it down after every use and we have more different front sails.
Not really a sailor but scientifically minded. I feel like the bottom corners of the spinnaker were too loose and tied too far aft. Need to tension the bottom of the sail horizontally. That may be easier if the halyard was let out so the base of the sail is closer to the deck, or maybe there is a lower attachment point for the top of the sail?
So you see it is just physics! That’s exactly what experienced sailors told us
Why is the boat pitching so much?
It might be because of the waves
The sea state always looks a lot smoother on video. See the motion of the fishing boat? The 55 looks fantastic, looks smooth and fast. Wish it was my yacht.
We have only one life, so take advantage if you can. The cost must be high, but nobody takes any money with them in the final exit. So that's irrelevant.
first
Are you flying the french flag on your new boat?
Yes we have to for the French leasing
.....looks like a lot of service repairs...??
As far as our experience goes every (brand) new boat will have a list of issues. For us the most important thing is the dedication and speed of the after sales service to solve the issues. So far we only had minor things and Outremer directly dealt with them.
To be fair the service of our previous Lagoon dealer Nautisch Kwartier was also excellent.
