Dr Sumeet Mhaskar, a labour sociologist and professor at OP Jindal Global University, has been analysing non-Brahmin and OBC politics over the last century and how these communities respond to the question of Hindutva and their economic hardship.
In this episode of What’s Your Ism, host Sudipto Mondal and Professor Mhaskar discuss the premise of Maharashtra’s Maratha reservation agitation and the sentiments driving other non-Brahmin communities to launch similar struggles.
As one of the few academics in India to study the economic factors behind the unrest within the socially dominant Shudra communities, Mhaskar applies the Ambedkarite lens to his economic and class analysis. Ambedkarism, he contends, is “misunderstood” to be primarily concerned with caste when it is also focused on class.

(this i wrote in the day this video published, but reluctant to post it, but then watching today's video, i think i should post it.
The common theme or issue, they both not able to distinguish that is Dalit movement is meaning being Ambedkarite, and if so, then is Ambedkarism means Religious conversion for emancipation of Dalit.)
I am actually totally confused about what he want is say or prove. For example, about distinction between Left & Dalit politics's analysis of labour, caste & class, I didn't see his understanding unique or new, apart from famous examples like industrialization & modernism will remove it? When he uses Anand Teletumde examples & Ambedkar's labour party or Gaikwad's slogen etc. it doesn't clear how he is distinguishing his analysis from Anand analysis.
Apart from that all the Marthi & Maharashtra politics has no relationship with his -ism, because it's a comes under common general knowledge.
So I request you to again take his interview & identify & differentiate his -ism from other Ambedkarit intellectuals. What is unique of his analysis which is different from Anand?
On the main question, is Dalit movement is also Class struggle? He didn't gave any new information, which is not in public domain, because as per my understanding caste question itself is a class question, on which he didn't say anything new. So didn't understand what is his analytical distinction from others.

32:00 : Amongst the marathas there was a section which was in the higher-service of the Nizams and they (Moglai/Nizami-Marathas ) considered themselves socially superior to the kunbi (peasant) marathas who were regarded as Shudras as per the hindu varna system. These Nizami-marathas were in minority and hence vulnerable to getting outnumbered in an electoral democracy, so they goaded the kunbis by ascribing upon them the status of marathas so as to increase their numerical strength which later helped them to capture political power. However, the kunbis continued to remain kunbis and only the Moglai/Nizami marathas monopolised the post of Chief ministership in maharashtra using the kunbi vote bank.

I don't know why so called intellectual people are dividing us on the basis of cast.
These dividing politics costs us very much in long term..
As an SC Person with good background financially i think our capabilities are decreasing day by day..
Because mentally we are not capable of doing competition with other cast..
I heard that jews are marginalised by whole world but still they are capable of everything..
Now as SC Person, we are not capable to compete with others.. becoz we are happy with what we get through reservation which kills our capabilities mentally...
If reservation is taken away from us we are not capable to stand with others..

      Tell me something?
Look at the SC representation in the parliament at present. How many candidates get voted from non-reserved constituencies. If it is a free for all then I don't think Sc would find loud voices. Reservations just gives crrtaim people a platform to go further.

      That's what I told...
Reservation gives us a deprived feeling that we are not able to compete with others...
Bas reservation ki wajah se hum seat bhi reserved category hi ki jeet pate hai... Kyunki humari soch hi limited ho gyi hai... Ki hume reserved seat par hi ladna hai...
I saw so many upper caste and obc category person with poor family background but they can compete with us in study , government jobs or even win an election with lower status background becoz their thinking is not like us

My question why do OBCs get reservation. They were themselves involved in inhumane treatment of SCs. Yadavs r super rich, dominant caste, who we oppressors themselves. Now they get reservation! Apart from political motives and vote bank there is no reason for OBCs to receive reservation of any kind. They themselves were the oppressors of dalits and now get reservation benefits.

This has been such a poor series of interviews. Interview ideologues on the left and criticise them from a position that's further left on the spectrum - big whoop!
Sudipto Mondal's interviews have pretty much been an ideological purity test - he's constantly pestering the interviewees to take positions he thinks are consistent with his caste politics and if they don't he smirks for they have failed the purity test.

North India should follow Tamil Nadu .. Due to Periyar, Tamil Nadu successful and the politics puts importance of anti-caste, reservation, social justice, inclusivity and respect towards minorities. Northies should start asking the question why from politicians to top judges, officials 90% are from the brahmins and upper caste? Is the north really follows the reservation? Does the north people read what ambedkar said? How come only 3-4% brahmins in the north dominating the 90% of people? Does the people still believe that British brought caste system ? Isn't brahmins the one who created the Varna system? Why people fall for sanatan dharma which clearly upholds the Varna system? When will people realise that RSS and Brahmins have hidden agenda to continue this Varna system?

27:40; The maratha reservation agitation apparently looks like a movement for reservations in jobs But covertly it’s a movement to consolidate the maratha stranglehold over maharashtra politics by seeking to get political reservations as OBC’s. Mandalisation has resulted in many OBC castes capturing several political positions at taluka and district level which before were the preserve of the dominant marathas.

Ur understanding to so flawed! I can only laugh at it. Hindutva is Hindu resistance, and demand for rights they were denied. Everytime their rights are infringed Hindutva will rise. Just look at Karnataka congress charged our temples with 10% tax, they give imams salary, 200 cr to waqf board. Hindutva will rise against this injustice which perpetuates with congress.
BJP is here to stay for next 50 years, either in state govts or central. I don't see its seat share going down 200 in the foreseeable future.

    • @sameeryadav4333

It is simply not true, Hindutva thrives on Hinduism. Hindutva as an ideology will remain as long as Hinduism remains. But political power might shift from time to time. Hindutva ideology was always common among the mass, but never got mainstreamed and normalised like it has been now.
