  • We return to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, this time with friends Aaron and Sarah in their Crosstrek, in an attempt to explore and film the area more completely than last time. Some unanticipated changes in conditions make things more complicated than expected. With my focus shifted from filming to just getting us through, the results are not quite the dunes experience I originally set out to capture.
    Here are some relevant links from the video:

      Last year I turned my 08 WRX in for a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Would of loved to have stayed Scoobie, but it just didn't have the options I wanted in a bigger travel friendly vehical with 4WD or AWD options. I would of been the guy saying, "come on little brother you can make the crossing. You can do it."

    This was such an entertaining video Donald! Your camera angles were on point! You'll be the reason I'll be buying a gopro suction mount! It was very nice of the green jeep Cherokee to to help you guys out. A good attitude is contagious and it seems like that got the Jeep crew involved in helping you guys find your line through that water crossing. You talk about the important things and offer information to your viewers, I personally really enjoy video's like this! Keep up the awesome work! You're almost to 1K! You'll be there in no time!

      Thanks Jon! All the camera credit goes to my son who handled the filming. He did all the GoPro placement and other manual shooting. I only shot a couple of the clips in this one. BTW he uses a clamp, not a suction cup. It works great, though it does limit the placement somewhat...he used the door handles, the roof rack, and the light bar. Some of the ultra-low tire shots he just did manually using a selfie stick. I did use @silver_rd1's suction cup mount for one of my trips however and was entirely impressed...that definitely opens up more options for getting interesting angles and I think that would be my first choice when I eventually get my own &$%*! GoPro. A good idea I saw recently was to tether the suction-mounted GoPro with some kind of cord just in case the suction cup lets go.

      Thanks! Yeah, there's a lot of ground there to explore, we didn't even come close, just drove the length and back along the damp edge, but laterally there are endless rolling dunes, "tree islands," ponds, as well as some very challenging marshy sand "roads" through the coastal forest that look interesting but which I would never ever tackle in the Forester unless I was rolling with a couple of built Jeeps with experienced drivers. And there are a few more of these large open OHV areas in other dunes elsewhere on the coast to the north and to the south. I don't quite have the confidence to set out over the expanse of large, purely dry dunes...in the tiny bits we did I can already feel how close the car is to getting stuck all the time. I obviously carry recovery gear but my favorite recovery method is not to get stuck in the first place. 8^D Thanks for watching!

      No idea, it didn't occur to me to track that. It was really only a handful of miles, I'm gonna guess we rolled maybe about 10 miles total on sand, so ultimately it's not a huge consideration. MPGs can't possibly be good though as the deflated tires are like driving on Jell-O™ and anything even slightly uphill and dry, the tires are spinning faster than you're driving. No, while you generally can't put a 15" wheel on these cars, there are a handful of manufacturers who build 15" wheels specifically designed to clear the brakes on a Subaru. Method (on the Crosstrek) and Black Rhino (on my Forester) are two of them; Motegi, KMC, VTX, and a few others also make 5x100 15x7 +15 wheels which will fit.

      Yes, you need an Oregon ATV permit, which is like $12 for two years and good at any of the Oregon OHV areas. You can usually get one at local ATV dealerships (places who sell quads, side-by-sides, etc) though it may also be possible to get them online. A bit of Googlng should sort you out. There's also a $5 day use fee at this (and presumably the other coastal dunes OHV areas) though some other Oregon OHV areas have no fee and just require the permit on your vehicle.

      You're right, I had that exact thought later...I think I NEED to go get stuck, so that I know exactly where the limits are.
      Being able to drive in places like this is rare. It's only possible in limited areas designated for vehicle use, and permits are required to drive in those areas. This kind of completely offroad, off-trail driving is illegal in almost all of our wilderness.
      The flags are required, it's for increased visibility, so everyone can see each other earlier and avoid head-on collisions coming over the tops of dunes.

    Fantastic as always! What do you use/recommend to "air back up" with? Was looking on Amazon but there's infinite options and all have mixed reviews.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  5 років тому +4

      Viair 88p. Going on two years, has worked out fantastically. I went with that after seeing countless recommendations for that particular model. You have to connect it directly to the car battery with clamps, so it's a slightly bigger hassle than a plug-in version, but from what I've read, the 12v "cigarette lighter" outlets often can't handle the power draw of a compressor and blow fuses. The hose on the 88p is long enough that I can just set it up at the front of the car and get to all 4 tires with the hose only, not dragging the compressor and power cord around as well. The other factor when shopping for compressors is duty cycle. All compressors can only run for x amount of minutes before they need to rest and cool down for y amount of minutes. On some of the less expensive models, the duty cycle is so short, and cool down so long, that airing up 4 tires can be a headache. The 88p has a very good run-to-rest ratio, I can air up all 4 without hitting the duty cycle max.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring 5 років тому +1

      #SaveTheManuals i second the Viair 88p. Alligator clips are the way to go! If you have extra cash then onboard air can be good, but overkill for Subaru size tires.

      No curbs out in the dunes! ;^) I would never go this low on anything but sand, I usually run about 22 on "offroad" trails. I actually went down to 14 this time because at 16 last time I felt like it still wanted to dig in too easily. I think I'm going to push it even lower next time, because at 14 it still felt diggy-er* than I would have liked.

    is the crosstreck lifted?

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 роки тому +1

      Yes...I believe they were on a 1.5" ADF lift at the time of this trip. They've recently made some changes to their suspension including lift, springs, and struts. Take a look at their Instagram @pnw_crosstrek for more details (and by digging back you can probably confirm what their previous setup was...pretty sure it was 1.5" but I may not be remembering correctly)

    this is why i always say unless you're going rock crawling on the regular or is something you actively do....why do you need a Rubicon or a 4runner, etc....give me a 2" lifted Crosstrek/Forester/Outback with some KO2s any day. It'll handle 90% of off road, and get me to work without feeling like my as just got kicked 20 times like in a Jeep.

      While I prefer Sgt. SLaughter's brilliant answer, the truth is, it's so you can be seen sooner over the top of a dune. With Jeeps and ATVs tooling around randomly over the tops of countless hills of sand, the flag lets you see someone coming a few moments sooner and gives you a chance to brake or change course. They're actually required in all of Oregon's drivable dune areas, both along the coast and out in the desert - you can't be out there without a flag. I imagine that's probably the case in most dune areas around the country. Thanks for watching!

      Well, I've never driven a Crosstrek offroad so I can't speak with real authority. But here are my impressions. There are a LOT of people running offroad builds of Crosstreks and actually driving them offroad...that makes me think it's a pretty capable machine. Equipped with the same elevated ground clearance and AWD system, and built on the same short Impreza chassis, the Crosstrek and Forester are pretty close cousins. The approach angle on the Crosstrek is not as good since it has that sporty front lip (part of why you see so many of them with their bumpers chopped or customized). I'm not familiar with all the Crosstreks over the years, but the 2017 Crosstrek in this video is equipped with a 2.0L NA engine and the CVT, and seemed to struggle a bit more than my 2012 Forester with 2.5L NA and 4EAT when it was time to deliver maximum power to the wheels for the dune ascents. That, obviously, is a relatively rare and specific scenario. I suspect most offroading Crosstrek owners will readily admit their cars aren't fast, but can crawl around most trails just fine. One other thing I like better about the Forester is how you sit in it...much more upright and truck-like, making it really easy to see in all directions when maneuvering around on a tight trail. The sportier, low-slung cockpit of the Crosstrek - to me - seems trickier to see out of and more, I dunno, insulated from the surroundings; again, that's just an impression. That obviously doesn't seem to be a problem for the multitudes who offroad their Crosstreks. 8^)

      My point of view is that the Forester has always been the most capable vehicle off road among all Subies. It is designed to take its owner anywhere. It is designed for the forest and for the mountains. The engine has more torque, the CVT can simulate low gears, more ground clearance and still weights 1500kg. The crosstrek for me is like a taste of what a Subaru can do offroad. Well yeah people do offroad them cause they have the potential and are relatively affordable. But again, if you want a Subaru in its full potential youd get a Fozzie.
      This is my point view and how i see things. By no means tmother Subies are bad. The crosstrek is a beast and it really depends on what you need and what you want.
      At one i am sure tho:
      It will never let you down!

    Stop the bad music already. It's not information, it's not entertainment, it's just noise, repetitious noise. We're you playing that music track when you were driving on the dunes? No. You would never play that music, subjected to it, you would not find yourself bobbing your head think, 'yeah, I really like that monotonous less-than-a-drum-machine beat' So don't do it others. 3:54 I had enough. Stop.
