There are two rumors about where the name of the Bebek neighborhood comes from. The first of these, Fatih Sultan Mehmet sent a sergeant with the alias "Bebek" to protect the area. The other is that a prince who saw a snake while he was walking in the garden of the sultan and after that his garden and got scared, was called baby by the sultan so they called it baby garden.
So, after compiling all of the meanings of Bebek listed in the responses, I think I have it; A soldier who had the nickname baby because he was afraid of snakes, was sent to this town where two land masses converged. He enchanted the people there because of his precious looking eyes, so they elected him mayor and named the town after him... Is that right? ;)

Arnavutköy translates to ''Albanian village''. Armenian is ''ermeni'' in Turkish, not arnavut. The origins of the place are not well known. But evidence suggests that there was a village of albanian namesake even in about 16th century. Ottomans used to put a lot of foreigners in certain areas and called it their village. Polonezköy(Polish), Çerkezköy(Circassian) and so on. All of them are regions on their own right, these days. Armenians used to be quite urban back in the day. They were not villagers of sort. More townsmen than villagers who came to the city. Bomonti, for example, is renowned armenian neighbourhood in İstanbul. About Bebek, the legend has it that women started to called the place ''Bebek'' because of a handsome man who used to live there. But I don't know. Probably has some other, rational reason. Turkish is a weird language, almost any word has soma alternative meaning. The word kurt, translates to Wolf, and a worm at the same time. The reason for this, is that the old Shamanistic belief that speaking the name of something would call it to you in real life. So in order to avoid being attacked by wolfs, they used a name for an insignificant thing, such as worm instead of ''Börü'' the actual word for wolf. It stuck and a lot of things have such meanings. Bebek probably meant something else that I myself don't know, and the name stuck because of that. Istanbul has a neighbourhood Küçükçekmece, which literally translates to ''Little Drawer'', don't think too hard on it. We're like astronomers, not very well on naming things. You'd find the whackiest nicknames in small villages in Anatolia though.
And the castle you saw, is actually a citadel. Built by Mehmed the Conqueror to block or at least restrain the naval activities on the Bosphorus, two years before the Siege of Constantinople, in 1453. There is another citadel, the Anatolian Citadel at the opposite side of the Bosphorus. Built by 4th Ottoman Sultan, who initially launched first real attacks on the city, back when Ottomans were just starting out as conquerors. The name of it is Rumeli Citadel. Rumeli means ''Roman lands''. Turks used to call the entire Anatolia ''Rum Diyarı''(Land of the Romans) then after it, they started to call the region from Bosphorus, including the regions of modern Macedonia, Greece of Mora Peninsula, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and such. So that castle, is the start of true Rome, according to Ottomans.

Döner means whirling in Turkish , like whirling dervishes , döner is very old Turkish food , even in Ottoman times sellers used to sell döner with wheelbarrows , döner spreaded to the world from Turks , the other nations like Greeks , Armenians , Arabs just imitate Turkish döner with differnt names or with the same name.

Arnavut means Albanian not Armenian you can Google It and köy its usually added to the neighborhood "meaning Albanian neighborhood" so who ever gave you the information it wasn't correct.
Hi, I would like to make a correction as to where the name Arnavutkoy comes from. You were mistaken when you said Armenian people were brought. It is actually Albanian people from Bulgaria and Greece region. The word Arnavut is also meaning Albanian.
please after travelling EU countries, the best idea is to eat at 5 star hotel restaurants instead of local people's eateries. Turkish prices of 5 star hotels are similar to cheap cafes' prices in EU countries. For 20 euros, one can get 200 grams of pure meat meal and rice in the hotels. Those Istanbulites look like arab sects with turbans and veils on all the time near the bosphorus promenade.

I am an admirer of your vlog and the philosophy you live your life by. I just have one request though. There is small problem with the way you edit your videos. there is a tendency to race through some parts very quickly, and spend a little too much on the other. it breaks the spell of what i believe you are trying to put us in - vicariously live it through you.
I have no problem with constructive criticism but I this is extremely vague. Could you tell me which parts in particular you are talking about? It might not be a problem with editing but the filming as we don't film long enough in some places and too long in others. Of course this is all subjective but I am happy to take the comments on board but I can't really do much with this 😊

What does the word "Doner" mean ? We just call them Yiros (Greek version) here in Adelaide, Australia as opposed to the Turkish Kebab.
Dönmek is the infinitive of ''To turn'' in Turkish. Döner just means something roughly ''Turner''
@@subutaynoyan5372 Great ! Thankyou !
@@canparem2710 Whirling kinda means to rotate around a bit irregularly, though. Not the same
@@subutaynoyan5372 , döner le , turner ne alaka , turner tornacı demek , turning de bari , atmışsın kafadan , turn de filildir , İngilizce dönmek demek , ama döner sürekli bir eksende dönüyor , tıpkı dönen dervişler gibi , yani whirling veya rotating doğru tanım , yani yarım yamalak İngilizcenle sallamışsın , bir de beni düzeltiyorsun , zaten ben sana cevaben yazmadım , ama sen bana cevap vermişsin nedense.
Arnavut means Albanian not Armenian you can Google It and köy its usually added to the neighborhood "meaning Albanian neighborhood" so who ever gave you the information it wasn't correct.
Thank you for the cheap but fantastic idea! I added this bosphorus walk to my list. And I know I shouldnt, but I will try this dirty food. :D :D

Hi there,
Just a quick note(arnavutkoy) meaning is Albanian villiage ,not armainian
You guys rock 👊👊
By the way...it's not the ocean you were describing...just the Bosphorus strait!

Thanks for the tip!
Did you explore the Besiktas central area? I stayed in that area for a couple weeks earlier this month.
How was it? Do you have something to recommend, maybe some seesighting?
Hi, I would like to make a correction as to where the name Arnavutkoy comes from. You were mistaken when you said Armenian people were brought. It is actually Albanian people from Bulgaria and Greece region. The word Arnavut is also meaning Albanian.
please after travelling EU countries, the best idea is to eat at 5 star hotel restaurants instead of local people's eateries. Turkish prices of 5 star hotels are similar to cheap cafes' prices in EU countries. For 20 euros, one can get 200 grams of pure meat meal and rice in the hotels. Those Istanbulites look like arab sects with turbans and veils on all the time near the bosphorus promenade.
hotels makes enough money let locals make some to and you can’t really find a good local foods in the hotels
Nice video beautiful bebek
She is always so cute. I love how literally literate she is ... sorry Alex, but she is always talking about the culture side while you are always having just fun out of the whole thing, but I love you guys !

Amazing Istanbul. We went to visit last year with two of my best friends. The people and the food weren't good but I just loved the vibe of the city.

How did you get to Arnavutkoy - bus, tram?
pronounced mahn-tuh; notice the undotted i. with dotted i it would be mahn-tee
Of course this is all subjective but I am happy to take the comments on board but I can't really do much with this 😊
but where did you get your necklace?!
As we know the size doesn't matter! 5:15
Arnavutkoy means Albanian village
I just come to watch Emma
Nice voice amaa
I think sometimes the spices get too over powering an the meat too greasy
Very nice and good videos. But the area you mention Armenian Village is not Armenian but Albanian Village. ARNAVUT Means Albanian.
