Define NORMAL. After 40 years of Living with a TBI Traumatic Brain Injury, a Coma for 5 weeks, plus a Concussion 6 years ago & a Stroke last year, I am a Survivor/ Warrior. My Physical Reactions & Speech may be slower, but I have relearned Everything, including not just Walking & Talking, but also Breathing & Swallowing, things most people take for granted. I need to PROCESS every single thing that I SAY & DO. That means I don't just HEAR, I LISTEN & figure out what the Words mean, I SEE, but I need to think of WHO & WHAT each scene is, what it Means & what I should do with the new information! Life can be very difficult. I am often misunderstood. Pre TBI, I had been a Teacher, in fact I had been on my way to school, when my car slid on snowy/icy roads. Only a Garbage Truck was out on the bad roads & the Driver went for HELP. I had returned to Work, as a Substitute Teacher. That was so difficult, but gave me HOPE. Therapy has been ongoing for decades. I may Learn one new Skill, only to have something else Lacking, so I have continued with mostly Physical Therapy. I have also had the Privelidge of returning to College for a 2nd Degree in Special Education. I learned so much about the "New Me" & how to use shortcuts to complete the many Tasks, which I do Daily. I am still learning about Life with a TBI.
