Old time rule: Ground shooting, cost you a case of beer! Hen shooting also cost you a case of beer! So after a 45 minutes of opening day hunting their was usually 2 cases of beer that had to be drank while cleaning birds. That was in the good old days, 1970's. Birds were so thick in the fields some of the rosters had to sit on the fence posts.

I wasn't around for the 70s but even in the 90s and early 2000s the birds were thick. Now their numbers are dropping quick. Where they are thick you have to pay 300 to 500 a day to shoot three birds. It is getting sad.

Last weekend I brined grouse breast for a few hours, then grilled them. Insanely good. I bet pheasant would benefit from that type of cooking as well. Great video.

Always love the terminator bird who runs the entire gauntlet without taking a pellet. Looks like you are a little light on the dog power, with land like that I'd happily bring you 4 of mine ;)

@@MinnDakOutdoors One way you could try is to fry or brown it just like you did. Then bake it for one hour on low heat 300°- 325. Keep a 1/4 inch of water in the pan and put a cover on while baking. Flip it once at 30 minutes. I fry the pheasant first in fry magic batter and add 1/4 or 1/3 of shore lunch Cajun to the fry magic. Don't just keep the breast off the pheasant keep the thighs for sure I even keep the legs. You'll be surprised how much good meat is on them too.

Nice Hunt Sam! Glad to see something out of the ordinary!
However, I do not want to be this guy, but.. Please elevate the catch and cook.
I know the meals in general are supposed to be easy for beginners and such but those pheasants are not the only thing in season that go well with birds. Chantarelle's are in season and even Costco carries them by the pound containers. One of thee most simple recipes I've made still to this day is my wife's first meal she asks after any fowl hunting at the beginning of the season; be it duck & goose, or pheasant & grouse.
4 legs and two breasts of any bird, however grouse and pheasant go best with this meal.
garlic salt to season, kinders carmlized butter works well too from costco.
1lb of chanterelle mushrooms, chopped into bite size pieces, brushed and picked free of dirt; you dont have to wash the mushrooms but if you cant help yourself, just cook them longer to get the extra water out.
    2 twigs of thyme
1/4 cup white wine or sherry if you are feeling fancy
    3/4 cup heavy cream
Preheat oven to 425, prepare poultry or fowl and dry with paper towels and season. Once seasoned add to pan and begin a beautiful browning of the skin. Once browned on all sides, remove. Add mushrooms, one of the sprigs of thyme; chopped. And cook until the water evaporates from the mushrooms, which should be 3 to 5 mins, as soon as that happens add your sherry or white wine. Deglaze pan for 2 mins. After that transfer poultry or fowl back into the pot whilst adding the cream and full and last twig of thyme. Put into oven, preferably into a cast iron pot with lid and cook until 160. DO NOT OVER COOK THE BIRDS. Should be about 15 mins, check those temps regularly. Plate with a side of mash potatoes and whatever else fits your fancy. You will finish this dish, I can assure you that.
As for anyone trying to impress a date. You mention a fancy mushroom such as the chanterelle and I can confirm. Your date will be mightily impressed with your cooking skills.

I have a question that someone may be able to answer. I was out Turkey hunting the other day and I was making Turkey calls with a box call. One pheasant was reacting to the call, calling back and coming towards me. Is this behavior normal for pheasant?

I don't like this of hunting line. Too much of "quick draw contest" shooting for my taste.
