- Lee Davis’ sermon emphasizes the urgent need for "missional alignment" in the church, using Blockbuster’s decline as a cautionary tale. He illustrates how Blockbuster failed to adapt, leading to its downfall, paralleling this with the declining influence of Christianity in North America. He warns that unless the church refocuses on God’s mission, it risks becoming obsolete.
Davis shares sobering statistics on church decline, highlighting that only 1% of churches are growing by reaching lost people. He argues that the core issue is misalignment with God’s mission-believers focusing on church growth rather than kingdom expansion.
He presents four ways to align with God’s mission, based on Acts 1:
1. Focusing on the Kingdom - The church should prioritize God’s broader mission of salvation rather than institutional growth. Jesus and the book of Acts center on the Kingdom of God, not just the church.
2. Depending on the Holy Spirit - Just as Jesus told His disciples to wait for the Spirit before starting their mission, believers today must rely on the Spirit’s power rather than human effort alone.
3. Witnessing to the World - Every believer is called to actively share the gospel. The mission is not passive church attendance but active evangelism and discipleship.
4. Committing to God's Mission - The church exists as God’s instrument to bring redemption. There is no alternative plan-God’s mission requires full participation from His people.
Davis challenges the congregation to evaluate whether they are truly aligned with God’s mission, urging them to shift from a church-centric to a kingdom-focused mindset, ensuring they actively participate in spreading the gospel.
