2016 Colorado Rifle Elk Hunt with Randy Newberg (S5 E6)

- Randy Newberg has waited 20 years to hunt this elk unit in Western Colorado. Having applied and failed 19 times, the 20th time was a charm.
Unfortunately for Randy, this year was unseasonably warm in the west, even at 9,000' in Colorado. This extremely warm weather has the bull elk in deep holes, as to be expected with post-rut and late season public land elk. Just how far the heat would push elk into the canyons was unexpected.
This hunt was worth the decades of waiting. Lots of bull in bachelor groups, taking refuge in these public land canyons, gives Randy many options to choose from.
We've all heard the old axoim, "Once the shooting stops, the fun is over and the work begins." Never has that been more true than in this hunt.
This is exactly as the episode aired on Sportsman Channel in 2017.

Steve Rinella put it best. "There are two types of fun. The type that you are enjoying yourself in the moment, like a roller coaster, and the type you are absolutely miserable in the moment." I don't know about you but I don't remember the last time I was at an amusement park, but I can tell you twenty plus stories about being cold, wet and tired. Each one of those instances were a blast now that I'm sitting on my couch. Take care and nice bull by the way.

Perhaps the best hunting video overall I've seen. Bar none. Blood, guts, determination.... it's all there. In not so many words, it's the end goal that matters. Often with no easy way to get there. Whether for hunting, or a major life challenge. Amazing!!!!
Love this video. Hard work on public land makes a trophy on its own. The way this was documented is astounding. It is not for the weak at heart.
You need a TV show of your Hunts Randy , it would be the biggest show in History .
Love these videos! Good grief I can’t stop watching, it’s great to see what most of us public land hunters go through. I just got my first Elk in New Mexico and the work and preparation that is required made it all worth it. At times you get down on yourself but as you said “it’s a mindset” that gets you through.

Randy the worse pack out i ever had was in Alaska packing this moose out of a swamp in a valley that was 1300 feet.
I regretted it every step of the way up and back down and back up.
But when it was over what a feeling of accomplishment i had. One of the best Hunts i have ever went on.
I really enjoy your video's because you add the stuff that others leave out that is a part of hunting and i am really loving the Hunting episodes day by day that you have been doing Thank You!!

Do you know what makes your vids the best? You use 1/3 of the episode showing the pack out... That's the full hunt you don't see with most other productions. BTW great shot & a kudos to your camera man too!
Thanks. It was one of those hunts where the pack out needed to be part of the story. The camera guy, Marcus, also carried loads of meat in addition to his camera gear. Lucky to have great people working for me.

Great video! I watched this video last year prior to my 2023 Colorado muzzleloader hunt in unit 61.I cashed in my 29 preference points to get a muzzy tag. I ended up killing the biggest my biggest bull ever. The terrain was similar to that in your video. It was a great hunt. Passed up a lot of young bulls. My 61 year old legs were like rubber by the fifth day when I killed my bull. We were 2.5 miles back in and could not get horses to the bull due to recent rains and steep terrain. The pack out was a labor of love.

I turn 40 here in a month and hunt Colorado Elk every single year...and I've never worked as hard as you did on that kill...most people have probably no clue to what it's like walking in those conditions but I do...well respected and congrats on that sweet 7point

Randy, what can I say another great video and hunt under your belt. Conditions are not always good for hunting so you have to make the most of what you have eh? I think that's why I'm addicted to hunting too, never afraid to take on the worst of conditions; that's what makes for great memories IMO, and the shot when and if it comes!....excellent stuff to watch esp when I turn 96 and after...thank you! Cheers to you and your team! Nothing wrong with dying doing something you love! He's down ( my buddy) nope he's up, nope he's dead good stuff, elk gods are following you!

This was a VERY good video and hunt. You most certainly paid your dues, IN SPADES in EARNING that bull. I felt for you on every step up and out because I've been there myself. Don't know how may times you can hear it but, I certainly take my hat off to you (and Marcus as well). I can see some of the motivation for this hunt seeing as how you waited nineteen years to be drawn. If I waited that long, and was physically able....then YEP, I'd do it too! Thank you for taking us all on this adventure with you. I love watching ALL of the hunts you post. The best to you!!!

Great Video Randy, Love your show. Congratulations on the successful hunt. We hunt the same units every year. Very Rough Country, but if your willing to battle the rough terrains and go where no one else will, it is well worth it. We have had many successful hunts near this area. We will be one Unit North of where you are at here starting Nov. 4th. 2017, maybe we will see you out there some time. Good Luck.

Hey Randy, I love this video because it’s right next to my family’s and mine’s private land. You was about 1.5 miles east of ours. I’ve been on that ridge many times. And done the same thing whew it’s work. That one trail is called snow shoe trail. My grand father ran cattle along that trail and I’ve pushed cows on it too. You’re a great hunter to go the extra miles to get it. Love seeing our area on video. Great job my man.
You know the pain of that location. Your Grandfather is a badass to run cattle along that trail. That is the worst elk extraction of my life and hopefully I never have one similar to that.
My dads been blessed enough with a 1st season and a muzzle tag in that unit and it’s unbelievable the amount of oak brush and big bulls that you get to see! Such a fun hunt! I get to go again this year with a friend for muzzle! Can’t wait!

@@johnmorley6663 successful, but… my buddy shot without really seeing horns, took a rag horn opening morning, had a swarm of giants around, shot first bull to come into calling. I think he was waaay too overwhelmed with it all. Hahah fun morning

I don't know who's telling Randy he's below-average and things he does. This guy is one of the most sensible level-headed grounded people I've ever seen and I hope I get to meet him someday. I've been a Trapper and Hunter all my life. I've been around people like him almost my whole life. People who are not like he and I are not the kind of people that I enjoy being around because they are lost inside

Well Randy I’m 59 and I’m going to give it a shot this year 3 Season Colorado. I have hiked around 500 miles trying to get in shape again. I hope to get a Elk. I have not been lucky yet. Yes here is Hiking and there is the mountains and nothing prepares one for the grades and the loads.

Great job Randy! All that time on the computer scouting really paid off? I'm thinking this might be GMU 2 but All Colorado public land is nasty country. Your lucky to be only 52 which puts you a full 10 years younger than my Colorado Carnivores, and nearly two decades younger than me.
And so for us the answer to getting any game especially big bulls for us is horses. This was one your best elk hunt videos!🎯

I was in Colorado that exact season last year (2016), up in the White River National Forrest. You weren't kidding, not a cloud in the sky let alone one single snow flake for the entire season. It felt like late spring. It was crazy. Made for difficult elk hunting. What's the saying? A bad day elk hunting is better than a good day at work.
I've hunted many decades and never had a November that was so hot. Hope we have better conditions this year.
Randy, if it weren't for the type II fun then I wouldn't be doing it! Hoping to get into some of that this year.

good job Randy. watching your videos i have decided to try for a WY or ID archery elk hunt next year. i get one almost every year on a diy public lands wilderness rifle hunt in UT. i would love to try an archery elk hunt w/o giving up that hunt hence the out of state. keep up the awesome videos. btw i had to start boning out the elk this year i am too old (48) to hike that extra weight out, my butcher would never take a boned out elk tho.

Randy....You are not below average on probably the majority of things you do. I am 58 years old and I can read people pretty good. You may not be the smartest (Nor am I) , but you're are tenacious and smart.
Tenacity and determination are required for below-average folks like me.
Have you ever thought about getting a couple of college interns to help with production and pack out? You convince them it's valuable experience and they do it for next to nothing. It's just like when my dad LET me clean all the fish we caught after a trip to the lake. Awesome video as usual.
We surely have thought about it. I just need to work on that idea.

You inspire me to hunt Bulls in sanctuary areas. I always shy away from taking a bull in nasty areas because I hunt with horses and pack out my elk meat on horses. I know some sanctuary areas Incould never get my horse to haul out that elk and I don't have a pack to haul out that big of an elk.
Could a guy have got a horse to that elk in Colorado that you killed? It looked very nasty with the oak brush and terrain. Typically we have 6 to 7 miles to haul out elk in the backcountry where I hunt in SE Idaho so I use horses exclusively. I just cannot pack out an elk 6 to 7 miles. I guess I'm not as tough as you. Now I haul in a pack frame to pull out an elk because you have inspired me to shoot a bull in a nasty sanctuary area. Thanks for these awesome videos and stories. You are my favorite.
That terrain was too steep for a horse. Most places we shoot them a horse would be a great asset. I'm too ignorant about what it takes to keep horses, so I don't own any. Good luck this year.
how good does the meat hold up after being out for 2 days like that in the warm climate?

You know, from one from Koochiching county to another, I'm LAUGHING FOR YOU about this hunt. I've lived for nearly 26 years in S.W. Colorado, type II fun is what I do. If I had 19 points on the line I would pull the trigger on that one also. I get the pref point every year and hunt elk 3rd season, on public lands on an O.T.C. tag.
The elk having the last laugh is priceless 😉

Hello! Enjoyed my time! Opening day 10 minutes into sitting in my spot I found to hunt a cow elk came within 20 yards of me. No cow tag😣😣😣. 1 hour and 15 minutes later...a very nice cow elk came to my mud hole I was watching at 10,300 feet...again no cow tag😣😣😣. I have 3 minutes of video of her! The rest of the week we did not see anything accept mule deer and black tails...accept our last day we climbed up to 11,300 on a very gnarly trail in the truck then proceeded to walk from there to find our hunting spots for the day...we ran smack dab into 2 nice bull moose!!! Tgey were majestic!!! I hope you are enjoying your hunt!!!

Randy, I'm a new subscriber. Love your videos. Especially since you harvest elk off public lands, because that's what I'm interested in. Hunting with outfitters is way outside my budget. I really would like to know what scope you're using? I really like that you mentioned how you had information how to adjust your scope for that steep down grade shot. This is new to me as well. I've been looking at a Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16x44 30mm tube. Do you know anything about this scope?
I use all Leupold products. They dominate the rifle scope category for a reason. In this hunt I was using a VX-6. I also have VX-5, VX-3i. All of them have the Leupold CDS system that allows you to range, set your dial, and shoot.

It's funny we always tell ourselves in the moment we'll never do it again, then find ourselves doing all over again next fall =)
Shhhh!. I wish that was not the case, but having failing memory and elk addiction, I would probably shoot him again if given the same chance this year, even in the same canyon.

Just to get an idea of the work involved, what was the elevation difference between the truck and bull, what was the distance between them, and how long did it take for just one trip from the bull to the truck? I see a lot of land I would like to hunt, but want to be realistic about how much work it is to get a bull out of steep country.
It was 1.400' of elevation. Horizontal distance covered while scaling these was about three-quarter mile. It was steep and miserable, but made for great memories.

Man what a hunt, I agree about shooting more than once. I don’t hunt elk, but if it’s a trophy buck and he gives a good second shot, I’ll shoot again.

Both. Apply for tags and if you don't draw, buy an over the counter tag.

It cooled by putting it in the shade and wind. Overnight it got down into the 40s, enough to cool meat thoroughly if left in the hills.
