I remember watching this some years back in Africa and wondering when I'll eventually get a Visa to come to LA after being denied soo many times. By the grace of God, I'm typing this from Los Angeles, and Just thankful that I am finally here. God is still in the miracle business don't give up...

Tip #1 - Don’t move to LA thinking 40k will get you by. That’s considered the poverty line.
Tip #2 - Have your guard up. There’s users who drive Maserati’s but have 6 roommates looking for their come up.
Tip #3 - You wanna live in Venice or SAMO? Make sure you close your windows. Line of tents ready for a sleepin’
Tip #4 - Don’t leave anything in your car
Tip #5 - You are surrounded by wealth. Don’t let Hollywood get to your head. Don’t be dumb with your finances

    • @Skyerzen
      @Skyerzen 5 років тому +3

@@PrincessTatyanna of course of course.... but they shouldn't. what they are looking for, they are not going to find here. It will be nothing but a huge waste of their time, energy and money. Basically here in L.A. you slave ALL DAY and spend another big chunk of time sitting in traffic just to pay rent.
In L.A., if you go to a festival or public event like the Renaissance Fair, or a museum, etc, you have to deal with expensive parking and impenetrable crowds.
L.A. is NOT a city of dreams.
I had friends (girls) that came here wanting to be models, actresses etc. All of them beautiful on their own right. Some of them turned back disgusted after a few years of trying their best. Some stayed... and became adult entertainers, if you get what I mean... but only for a short while. Once their sparkle wore out, they also left. ALL of them were terribly harassed.
One of those friends once texted me frantically to come rescue her. A "manager" was getting a little touchy and grabby with her. The dude would get angry and scary at the slight sign that she was leaving.
She called me because I ride motorcycles and look intimidating on my gear.
Luckily for her I was with a bunch of riders and we descended on the restaurant/bar where they were in a big group and took her with us. (fun fact: I told my friends not to take their helmets off since we all looked like nerds lol)
L.A. is not a good place UNLESS you have a job lined up and it pays at least 120,000 a year...

These tips were great! I think it's super important to be aware of the cons of moving to LA, but some of the negative comments on how you have a slim chance of making it, etc. are so heart breaking to see. Not for those reading them, but for those writing them. I think if you have that mindset that you have a slim chance of making it, you will definitely never make it. The people making it are the people who push through every obstacle despite the bad times. It's so easy to see the shiny success others have and overlook all the stuff they had to go through to get to where they were at! If it was easy, everyone would be making it!
If you want to move out there and have a dream, keep believing in yourself and work your butt off!

Native Angeleno with some advice: 1) Get a reliable car 2) Move here with 8K cushion or you'll end up homeless 3) Try to have a job lined up--preferably a transfer from another job 4) Get into a roommate situation 5) Make sure you have at least a 700 credit score, because housing is tight.

LA isn’t all that. Lived here all my life. The movies and videos of LA aren’t what they are in real life. If LA was described in three words, it could be traffic, overpriced, and overpopulated. Come here if you want, just don’t complain about the city when you’ve been warned beforehand.

Not the same population per square mile as NYC or Boston.
Only a few places as crowded as DC or Atl.
Don't forget: LA still has fewer people than NYC but Los Angeles County is a BIGGER AREA THAN NEW JERSEY. and the LA metro area stretches into 5 counties and more than 800 localities (towns cities etc). Only place in the west that is as crowded as the East Coast is San Francisco.
Otherwise the west is a bigger area without as many people.
Last I checked the tallest apartment buildings in the country were in Chicago.

Pro tip: Make genuine friends with the long time Angelinos, we help our friends and look out for the neighborhood.
If your down with the brown and speak a lil spanish you can make friends, find work, seek rooms/housing, or double your pay rate.
    Generally being bilingual helps
Ethnic enclaves exist within and on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
There are many opportunities here, just gotta stick it out and make friends.

Living 20-30 minutes from your job in LA could be as little as 4 miles in more congested parts of the city. It's better to anticipate that your commute may take 60-90 minutes each way. I'd actually encourage using the Metro for new residents, especially if their job is close to a Metro station. Living close to friends is also important. I lived in Highland Park and only made it out to the West side a few times a year because it's such a chore, even after rush hour.

just eat mostly in Inglewood and you can eat for $10-20.
    Culver City:
    1) La vegan - culver blvd? You’ll find it- kinda greasy but good
    Inglewood:
    2) Golden Doughneut Ice cream
    11051 Hawthorne Blvd
    Lennox, CA 90304
They have huge sandwiches for under $6 that will probably last you all day. I get the avocado egg sandwich. So many options fat and healthy. They also have juiced vegetables. They can have long lines. Good service. They speak Spanish, English and I think Chinese?
    3) Emma's Snack Shop
    205 S Market St, Inglewood, CA 90301
It’s not just a snack shop. They have every sandwich you could imagine and you can have it your way. $5-6. They also have salads, fruit and veggie smoothies and fruit cups. In addition, they have everything that a normal convenient store would have. Come in the morning and park your car right in front of the door lol. But the food is truly good. Spanish and English.
    4) Little Belize
Little Belize, 217 E Nutwood St, Inglewood, CA 90301- it’s down the street from Emma’s. It reminds me of Belize. It will take some time but it will be just like they serve it in Belize. English, creole.
    6) Hungry Joe's Jamaican Restaurant, 1100 N La Brea Ave #100, Inglewood, CA 90302- it’s Jamaican food. They get a lot of business and there’s little parking but it’s good. You can get just a beef patty for $3 or get a meal and a drink for around $12. English, Patois
    Venice:
    Thai vegan $10
    Santa Monica:
    Sweet fin poke $13
Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery $10
    Seasalt Fish Grill $15
    Wahoo's Fish Taco $12

1). Studio City is good location. Love Studio City! Definitely have to go with the (your) vibes. Love DTLA but didn't like living there. North Hollywood and Glendale are good as well. 2.) 20-30 minutes equals 1 hour in traffic lol -live even closer! 3.) Sooooo true. 4.) Yes, have a car. I didn't ship my car and the bus/train takes FOREVER. Something that would take 20-30 minutes by car could take up to 2 hours. I also did Uber/Lyft but it adds up! Trust me. 5.) Never knew about Discover LA - thanks for sharing! 6.) Vegan restaurants are really good. And of course the tax on that food will do it too! 7.) Yup! 8.) Yup true. 9.) Yup true as well lol 10.) Haha it's so hard not to but eventually I had stopped doing it.

Sure if you go to some uppity lunch spot in west hollywood it will cost you that but right around the corner you’ll find a chipotle for a good meal under $10. Also, the nice areas are expensive to live in, pasadena (very removed from the santa monica and hollywood places) but calm and nice, santa monica, venice, hollywood, etc all guna cost you a lot. The main things that ppl complain about like cost of living & traffic really are not a big deal if u are from another large city. I feel like ppl who complain about these things must be from some small town. For me traffic was no worse than what I deal w/ living in Chicago. We have much better public transportation here though, so you are not forced to drive everywhere. In LA you have to drive more b/c public transportation isn't nearly as reliable, so you deal w/ traffic more often, but it really wasn't any worse than what I'm used to.
I found food, drinks & shopping in general to be cheaper b/c LA sales tax is only 6.5% vs ours being 10.5% (highest in the country). There is no crazy beverage tax like in Chicago so my coffee at Starbucks that I pay $6 for every day here was only $4. There are also a lot of affordable restaurants where you can get lunch for like $10 - you do not have to spend $30 for every meal.
Going out was cheaper too. Parking was easier to find & less expensive. I paid $10 to park in a lot by the club I went to in West Hollywood. Where I live it would have been no less than $20. The 2nd night I actually parked on the street for free. The club itself was also free to get into.
As far as rent, most 1 bds were $1,400-$1,800 in Inglewood & Leimert Park, which is where I am interested in living - not drastically more than where I live now. It seems that it's only way more expensive if you just have to live somewhere fancy, or when you are ready to buy. I can buy a condo in Chicago for under $200K whereas the cheapest properties I saw in LA started at $350K. So when it comes to buying it is definitely more, but as far as rent, taxes & regular everyday purchases like food, drink & going out I found the cost of living to actually be less.

Brittany J People like to focus bashing LA for the cost of living too much. There are much more affordable cities to live in California. Palmdale, Lancaster, Apple valley, Mohave, and Bakersfield are much cheaper places to live in California. There are downsides of small towns too. There are fewer restaurants and places to shop. Heavy traffic is another thing people like to bash LA for. Heavy traffic is also a problem in Manila in the Philippines too.

One thing you need to understand about LA is that everyone is OVERQUALIFIED HERE! If you don't have major degrees, a juicy resume with a shit ton of work history, best you're gonna get is a dishwasher job. It sucks, but that's one of the hardest things I found out here.

You don’t need a car if you live in LA imo. In fact I’d say the train/subway are comparable if not better in terms of time while driving in traffic. To insure my car in LA (it was a loan so I had to have full coverage) it was literally $300 A MONTH. I wound up giving it to my brother. Don’t get a car and use that money to put towards other things like rent or like having a life outside of your car lol. Plus the train is only like $1.75 I think? And it runs from about 4AM to 1AM so you’re not restricted in terms of time and can still have a life.

I say it every time I see these videos move 20 miles out from all the name cities like Santa Monica, DTLA, Venice and you can find a decent apartment and don't have to deal with all the other LA crap. I work in DTLA but live in the South Bay and it is Awesome. Sure I have a little traffic to work and back but it's a trade off. Also I'll tell you this you need to make at least 55k a year to make ends meet and to have a comfortable life if you take the aforementioned advice.

🙋🏽‍♀️ You can also try to find a place that is rent controlled. This way your rent will not skyrocket dramatically every year if you decide to stay at that building which can help in the long run :) a lot of affordable spots in places not mentioned here like San Gabriel, Alhambra, & Boyle Heights + so much more. Also, NOT EVERYTHING closes early & not every meal costs $25 per person 🤣 if you go to a lot of hipster areas (i.e. little “instagramable” coffee shops/restaurants, high tourists spots, or spots that’s vegan friendly lol) then yes.

As a native angleno, I can see truth in many things he said in this video, but this is also an expected outlook from someone who has not explored the majority of LA. There are so many other cities to consider like Koreatown, Echo Park, north valley (Burbank, Sylmar), the list goes on! All the places he mentioned like WeHo, Venice, Santa Monica are extremely expensive and just very unrealistic for many people. Yes, every city has a different vibe in LA. I grew up in the valley and go to Downtown basically whenever I feel like it and let me tell you, if you are looking to move here and you’re on a budget, I recommend looking into central Valley (places like Van Nuys and north Hollywood) these places are also way less congested than the more well known cities and only a 20-30 minute drive from LA. If you want to move here and live the life of influencers you see online, you’ll likely need lots of roommates, which is actually a very common occurrence here.

More: Don't get into any road rage incidents! Avoid those drivers. Burbank is its own city. Santa Monica is my personal fave. Born and raised there! But there's no longer rent control so it's super expensive for a small apt. The 405 is a parking lot (learn the side streets:). Rush hour NB 5 starts at 2:30-3:00pm. On the 10, from PCH, it's almost all day, east and westbound. It does have some amazing restaurants but gas and food is pretty darn expensive. Sales tax is too. But minimum wage is livable. ☺ And almost all red lights have cameras! Be careful! 😮
Beaches- north of Malibu and south of Manhattan beach are awesome! The Newport Christmas Boat parade and Torrance at Christmas time are definitely worth seeing!
