3:47 There I am down there, seeing 4014 move for the first time! I looked at other footage of Granger, but this one takes the cake! And a big boy cake at that! Excellent footage.
Brilliant video, gorgeously filmed. Kudos to Union Pacific for the outstanding restoration on Big Boy and giving all of us rail fans the opportunity to capture this majestic locomotive in HD and 4K for posterity.
The light, the time, the angle and the event! This is picturesque at it's finest. Very, very well done sir. I think to most railfans the "Big Boy" is the paramount of trains. And even non-railfans can enjoy this shot utmost, for obvious reasons. This scene perfectly encapsulates everything that was and is so romantic about steam locomotives. The distant whistle and the beautiful white smoke is the icing on the cake. I'm in Love!
We live in an insane time with literally the best of both worlds the most efficient diesel electric locomotives and yet the worlds biggest steam locomotive all on the same tracks no one is history has gotten this it was either one or the other we get both!
Thanks, the sunrise was also perfectly timed. If you watch on the top right in the second shot you'll see the sun starting to peek out from behind the cloud. Couldn't have asked for better timing.
Amazing, truly beautiful. Such a shame that power line wasn't in the way, but I'm sure you tried to get a spot without that. I have yet to see 4014 in steam and I can't even imagine what it must have been like to be there, seeing and hearing this. It's almost haunting with the images and sound!
Yeah, the power line was unfortunate. I could have set up further down the hillside to avoid it, but then I wouldn't have been able to get the receding shot over the other side of the bridge. Also I arrived only about a minute before I started filming.
This is the same feeling aviation lovers get when they see a b-29 super fortress, they just like nothing will ever stop them it looks like if a nuke dropped right next to it, there would be nothing but a few scratches if that
Yeah I was absolutely thrilled as the sun came up from behind the clouds just before it rounded the curve. I knew right then it would be the best shot of the trip.
I so agree with you, I can't get enough of these videos, such an awesome train,so haunting and absolutely magical, gives me goosebumps and makes me teary-eyed (in a good way)
I'm pretty sure I shot this with the Panasonic Leica 12-60 f2.8-4.0. You can tell because it remains mostly in focus during the zoom. My other zoom lens the Panasonic 14-140 f3.5-5.6 would have gone way out of focus when I zoomed.
Pure beauty of steam era... Both engines are running well, so maybe sometimes uncouple backup diesel loco to get footage more realistic like from the gold era of railways. To have all train looking like in 40's or 50's.
What do you figure the temperature was when you shot this? It looks and sounds pretty cold. I saw 4014 by itself last July and it was an awesome experience. The smoke from the stack was mostly dark gray and black, no white like this.
The UP experimented with converting a Big Boy to an oil burner back in the 1950's, and quickly returned it to burning coal because the burner wasn't capable of filling the firebox with an even flame. It's likely that 4014 is slightly down on power from his coal burning days but it could still probably pull a mile long train on level track. They put both locomotives on this train because of the plan to have them meet head to head in Ogden for the Spike 150 ceremony, not because both were needed to move this little train.
Thanks, if you'd like I can send a higher quality snapshot from the original footage which I edited the power lines out of. I shot this on a Panasonic GH5.
Believe the diesel is there to power the cars. Otherwise they would have to have a generator car? And just in case something went south they have it as a back up to get it off the mainline in a timely manner.
The diesel was there primarily for dynamic braking, and also for backup if there was a problem with the steamers. That said, Ed Dickens apparently stated that the diesel was used to reduce the load on the steamers a couple times during the trip. They want to break the Big Boy in slowly to ensure it has a long service life.
Odd reason to come to this video, considering no mention of the whistle was made in the title, but if that's your only take away I don't know what to tell you.
This video deserves to have over a million views
But amazing people on earth are not in millions..
Wow that scene is picturesque!
Yo its CraftyFoxe himself!

This is, by far, the best "big boy" video I've seen so far. Stunning.
MAJESTIC, ! ! ! No words to cover how GRAND this event was.
The Union Pacific Railroad and their Steam Crew are nothing but CLASS.
That's a beautiful video shot of the hole train with the beautiful sunset daylight.
They’re like brothers getting to play together. 844 was only under steam so he didn’t have to feel bad. Such amazing machinery.
Absolutely stunning. Brought a tear to my eye watching these old beasts
Glorious aren’t they ❓
Brilliant video, gorgeously filmed. Kudos to Union Pacific for the outstanding restoration on Big Boy and giving all of us rail fans the opportunity to capture this majestic locomotive in HD and 4K for posterity.
Two very beautiful machines
Great capture of these two engines.
Wow! you made a grand event even better with your great camera work! Thanks for sharing
The whistle on 4014 is stunning and absolutely perfect. Makes me smile every time I hear it.
The light, the time, the angle and the event!

I'm in Love!
These early morning shots, video or still, with the purple steam against golden rays just make my jaw drop. Painfully gorgeous!
absolutely beautiful shot! Well done
Absolutely amazing and atmospheric , a massive well done 👍🏻
Better than any contrail in the sky. Big Boy just doesn’t fail to impress. Beautiful video. Thank you so much!!
The greatest horsepower to weight ratio of any train of all times.
Simply amazing. Awesome footage!
Nice quality video capture. Thumbs up!
“Pride of a nation, a beast made of steel!”
"Big Boy makes its way, KING OF THE RAILWAY!"
4014 taking the green! Phenomenal videography, I’m beyond impressed!
Very well-chosen location and superb filming. A still from 2:59 would easily be good enough to be in next year's UP calendar!
It is epic. Two giant steam locomotives double heading a heavy excursion train.
That really is a thing of beauty right there!
its in such pristine condition, looking even better now than in the 40s/50s!!
Absolute perfection! The west roars again!
Oh what a gorgeous hunk he is!!!!
We live in an insane time with literally the best of both worlds the most efficient diesel electric locomotives and yet the worlds biggest steam locomotive all on the same tracks no one is history has gotten this it was either one or the other we get both!
Awesome video! Steamers in the sunrise...doesn't get any better than that!
The lighting, composition and exposure are perfect! You made the entire train look like an enormous set of remarkable brass models!
Thanks, the sunrise was also perfectly timed. If you watch on the top right in the second shot you'll see the sun starting to peek out from behind the cloud. Couldn't have asked for better timing.
Poetry in motion. Great video.
an absolute epic scene!
Only one word comes to mind: MAJESTIC!!
Pretty symbolic for Big Boy to start really doing work on this trip during a sunrise. It is indeed the dawn of a new era!
Nay, it’s the dawn of a long forgotten era coming back to light…
This Is Beautiful The 4014 And 844
Awesome job!
What a great vantage point! Great lighting! bravo
Beautiful footage
Amazing lighting, great video. Greetings from Germany
Ste Fan you said it
Such a awesome video, I love it.
Thanks Steve, I was pretty thrilled to catch the shots I did.
Wow absolutely incredible camerawork! Thank you so much for sharing this, it really is an amazing thing seeing 4014 roll across the prairie at dawn.
This spectacular footage is excellent for lowering blood pressure. :D
Excellent video, I was mesmerized the entire time!
Right so was just sweet looking
👍absolutely stunning 👍

Ultra Fantastic video!
There I stood almost beside you ;)
Greetings from Germany
Great shots!
That is a beauty. Great work!
It's really amazing. BigBoy in bigger nature. Deep impressions. 🇺🇸👍👍🇩🇪
Incredible footage, Aaron!
Thanks! Much more will be coming, I probably have an hour and a half of footage.
Great photography
Looks straight out of the 1940s. 👍🏻
Magnificent footage!
that is a nice train
This is the same feeling aviation lovers get when they see a b-29 super fortress, they just like nothing will ever stop them it looks like if a nuke dropped right next to it, there would be nothing but a few scratches if that
Very Awesome video :)
What a Beauty!!!
Awesome footage bro!! Can't believe the amount of views for such great footage!!! It's all good it'll catch some steam!!...lol..
Thanks, I hope so!
That is literally once in a lifetime footage...
Yeah I was absolutely thrilled as the sun came up from behind the clouds just before it rounded the curve. I knew right then it would be the best shot of the trip.
I so agree with you, I can't get enough of these videos, such an awesome train,so haunting and absolutely magical, gives me goosebumps and makes me teary-eyed (in a good way)
Turns out its actually a ghost train
But that whistle from far away sounds abit spooky
Incredible take on the most iconic shot of the trip. What lens are you using here? I noticed some zoom.
I'm pretty sure I shot this with the Panasonic Leica 12-60 f2.8-4.0. You can tell because it remains mostly in focus during the zoom. My other zoom lens the Panasonic 14-140 f3.5-5.6 would have gone way out of focus when I zoomed.
@@NorfKhazad Very cool! Thanks.
The closest I've gotten to riding the 844 is helping to replace the cab door on her sister up 833 at the union pacific museum in ogden.
Great Video!
thanks for my new desktop wallpaper
You're welcome, it's my wallpaper too actually.
Easily, steam video of the year! stunning footage!..and that's coming from a Black," woke" Hip Hopper, whose never left "The Bronx"
You're the man for dropping a comment 😂🙂
This is such a beautiful video, really captures the american west
Most amazing video even seen. Beutifull cinamatogaphy . You deserve.... you deserve 🤔deserve 🤔🤔..don't know what is that called..
Pure beauty of steam era... Both engines are running well, so maybe sometimes uncouple backup diesel loco to get footage more realistic like from the gold era of railways. To have all train looking like in 40's or 50's.
I believe that's where all the electricity is being produced for excursion services
The Big Boy is coming to Chicago July 27thru29😊👏👏
What do you figure the temperature was when you shot this? It looks and sounds pretty cold. I saw 4014 by itself last July and it was an awesome experience. The smoke from the stack was mostly dark gray and black, no white like this.
I think it was around 55 degrees. That's all steam condensation.
i only see EPIC FIRE BREATHING SHOOTING OUT FROM #844 and why DIESEL TRAIN there to assist i want raw power from both #4014 and #844
I don't know, but I've got the impression that burning oil may cause a lack of power. These machines were able to pull miles long trains...
What a way to began your reemergence as a train photographer! Great imagery and welcome back.
Btw, I assume there will be more UP4014?
Oh yes, much more. I have over 200GB of footage to edit.
ARE THEY GOING TO COME TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST????
less smokes, less fun
Fantastic footage, thank you. I have a new desktop wallpaper :) ... What camera are you using to capture the video?
Thanks, if you'd like I can send a higher quality snapshot from the original footage which I edited the power lines out of. I shot this on a Panasonic GH5.
Feel like no one‘s talking about 844
Is that Chris Paetow down there getting that prize winning shot just as the sunlight touches the train?
No, he is in the video though. He's hiding behind a rock just before the bridge.
Nice!...... x1,000,000
Just putting along
Why is their a modern locomotive?
mostly for dynamic breaking and backup if something goes wrong
For once it actually looks as if it is doing something! I asked many times if the diesel was pushing, no one answered.
They want to break the Big Boy in slowly to ensure it has a long service life.
and in reality the diesel ( 3rd locomotive) is pushing the 2 steam engines
It's not, it was only used for dynamic braking.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Watched this for the horn only one short blast at 2:20 not worth it!
Odd reason to come to this video, considering no mention of the whistle was made in the title, but if that's your only take away I don't know what to tell you.
