- A brilliant interpretation of the Academy Award song "Over the Rainbow".
An almost sacrilegious audience cough right before the last melody note was digitally removed.
Performed in Tokyo 1984
Jazz is like an ocean. You dive in and you find gems in the sand and the waves are warm as it crashes over you, never hurting, always caressing.
Wow. That’s an indelible comment. It sure is!
Как красиво вы написали !!! ❤
When you do get out of your comfort zone and the waves get too big, you can always swim back to what you like. Nothing wrong with enjoying what you like. There's so much jazz out there.
One of the most beautiful definitions of jazz I've ever read! Thank you for that -- it warmed my heart!
😮
We all can hide behind the fast notes, tricks, but to play this way, it takes master skills, and an honest noble heart.
For me, this is the best interpretation ever, at least for this song. I’ve listened to this a thousand times, and never enough. His classical training comes out bursting through every fiber of his body, caressing every note with sincerity, humility and vulnerability. Which is pretty much what good playing is all about...
😂Fast notes, tricks!! 😂. The good notes at the right time with the right intentions and sensibility, no hide only the truth!! Oh yeah!! The music loves you as strong you love the music Mr Jarrett and thanks for all!!
Yes!
I'm in awe of this performance. Restraint elegance with the touch of a master pianist.
Who ever can say more.. Just wonderful 🌿
I can't.
I’ll never forget stumbling across this performance circa 2008. I was a high schooler about to join music school. I had never heard anything so hauntingly beautiful. Jarrett masterfully dissolves the line between simple and complex harmony until the pure essence of the music is all that remains. This is my first time revisiting it in many years. It feels like saying hello to an old friend.
This fell a bit flat for me. There are much richer harmonic possibilities here.
@@prometheusrex1Interesting comment! Take two singers performances Patti LaBell and Renée Fleming..Patti on a fourth of july Renée at a venue(sorry l can't remember)in Washington District of Columbia.Keith Jarrett continues conjures enchantment
@AGoodVibe : I feel every word you say here . One of the most beautiful moments in jazz music 🎶
@@prometheusrex1I think he was trying to stretch the average listener’s ears while still holding them in the safety of simplicity. I enjoyed it!
This is one of the most moving things I’ve seen. And his performance is not theatrics, it’s absolute delight at the sound of music. Anyone who loves music, especially the piano, knows this beautiful feeling.
Keith Jarrett is the most sensitive, free and musical performer I have ever heard. His Köln concert recording made me want to play the piano, which became a pivotal point in my Life for 45 years ! Thank you Mr Jarrett.
Really good
Sure
Same with me, if it wasn't for listening to Keith I would never be a pianist. :)
Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for taking us there Mr. Jarrett.
Keith deserves great global recognition. For me he is one of the best composers in the world because to improvise in that way you need to be a great composer of melody and harmony. Thanks Keith Jarrett.
Yes he only let the right Silence betwen note searching and finding an expression of beauty he want to GIVE. And we receive all his Magic moment. Expression of PEACE LOVE and sweet lighted courageouse woman tolove you catwoman was the great. I Hope you are allright. You have got the eyies. And i saw all the boat.
Love this, thanks V for this masterpiece ❤️❤️✌️✌️👑👑👑 , this is soooooo relaxing 😌😌😌!!!!!!
I played this for my sister before she died. It still haunts me after all these years. Thank you. God Bless. 😂

Just enormously grateful... Hope he will recover from his stroke
I loved, really beautiful Performance
I didn't know about the stroke.
What happened to him?

This man plays from his heart and soul. So beautiful.
From our heart and soul... Makes it all one.
I think the brain is involved somewhere. Specially in the case of such an intelligent musician.
@@BethanyLowe8773 not anymore. The movements of the hands are directly connected to emotions. Of course, after a very long period where the brain was trained to do such a link.

So incredibly expressive. I come back to this often and it never gets old. With all the bad news these days, it's good to remember we have this...humans capable of such beauty.
This moment of pure musical ecstasy should be compulsory study in every music school in the world. Keith Jarrett evolves in a world apart as a pianist and composer and has left an indelible mark on the minds of many musicians. As a flutist and pianist, I can simply be in awe of such incomparable talent.
Me and my cousin flew to the Montreal Jazz Festival a few years ago to see him live... One of the highlights of my entire life.
This is one of the most beautiful renditions of any song I have ever heard. it made me so happy, I smiled all the way through..and teared up a bit. Keith is a national treasure.
As Bernie Taupin said "How wonderful life is with you in the world" dear, amazing Keith Jarrett!
A genius. He truly goes to “another place” when he’s playing.
Sending healing thoughts, gratitude to Mr.Jarrett. Such a brilliant artist! I’m so grateful we have these videos and his recordings. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️
HEALING IS A SELF FULLFILLING PROFECY WHEN KEITH TOUCHES IVORY with his mind, body, soul & heart for others, & their sense of listening on earth.
Dynamics is what truly tells the story of a song. This guy is one of the best storytellers out there.
Brilliant comment, thank you!
There will never be Artificial Intelligence that can create this, much less overcome it. Every time I listen to this Genius improvising I verify that life is not absurd.
Not the way they’re building it now… but at some point there might be
Love the sentiment, but yes there will. This an better.
You don’t know anything about artificial intelligence their potentional. Why are you assuming that artificial intelligence can’t have emotions. It depends on what they sense and feel.
Yes well, maybe you are right but it is not the same; These emotions are artificial and in truth they may be calculated with great precision and created with infinite possibilities, but they will always be artificial; never natural. It's a matter of taste, and I also don't believe in artificial intelligence, for me it's just automated and mechanized statistical management.
@@orlando4166 you think to highly of your senses. your world can easily fall apart when you start being open to conce[ts that conflict with your world view. your opinion is very subjective and is not based in reality in too how much is experienced. your world is unique to your perception and i think you romantize the concept of an music human player too much. i get that. but you have to understand that its sound and if AI can find the frequenties that we humans can't even hear and is able to calculate a music piece from that on millions and million and millions of possiblities and experiments of human reactions to frequenties. i think it could be music that you would believe a human had made.
Piano playing is an art and a craft, a beautiful song is a magic to the senses, both rendered together is a blessing to all listeners. A glimpse of a different fullness is here to urge us forward from life's negativity. Jarret's perspective is always welcomed it's refreshing
The complete symbiosis of a musician with their instrument.

Lol. The piano is beautiful but not living lol. Dude's just a good pianist.

You are witnessing the Ikigai of Classical Music and Jazz. Some of us have trodden a difficult path just to get to this realization. I always thought that I was too emotional to play well, but you brought me back. Thank you Keith.
One of the most beautiful melodies ever written performed by one of the greats. Can't go wrong! So beautiful!
The most striking thing to me about this is his restraint. He was so tight with his choices that it brought the whole score to sharp, high contrast focus. Sublime really.
SUBLIME
Nathan A Lane Exactly
@@heldon17 capitals 4 enthusiasm & agreement
What he is doing in the quiet bits, is planning what the rest of the improvisation will be. Lol
Sublime-ish. I mean,it's not like it's up there with a p.p.p.(piece of pianistic perfection),like "Eugen Cicero-Exercise" for example.
This is the best piano version, that I've ever heard of this beautiful song. Thanks for the upload.
Keith Jarrett's performance is absolutely stunning: gracious, technically advanced yet playing in a soulful jazzy manner, that touches my heart at its core- simply the best

How often in a lifetime can you hear something you’ve heard countless times before, but hear it anew for the first time because of the brilliant emotional import of an inspirational interpretation?
Behold such an auditory experience…
never fails to bring tears to my eyes...there is phrasing and then there is Keith Jarrett
When a musician, an artist, is one with his/her instrument and allows the music to be center stage… we are changed. This is the brilliance of Keith Jarrett. Thank you is completely inadequate.

I haven’t seen...or FELT this clip in probably 25+ years. Such artistry and depth of feeling. Words mean next to nothing to express what this does to me. Never forget...Keith Jarrett
Never liked this song, but he is making it the most beautiful piece. So much feeling and new interpretation. Just blows me away.
God bless this man. And the person that introduced me to him.
Brian Cox?
This is a piece of music that you mess with at your peril but Keith Jarrett breathes new life and insight into it. Truly inspired performance.
When somebody is something you know you'll never come close to being but learn to sit back in a corner and accept it and appreciate what they are. This and Overjoyed by Stevie wonder, 2 of my all time fav songs regardless of genre. A prodigy, bordering an almost psychotic level of genius, took a great song and left it great. A constant "pulling you in" with zero disappointment. No machine gun of bebop lines to make me think too hard. That's the genius of this to me. Thanks Mr jarrett
theshipissinking no Overjoyed, yes, because it was recorded somewhat later in his career, it is missed by many for being one of his two or three greatest compositions. if you said his best i wouldn’t disagree with you. but could anyone else ever perform it better? Doubtful.
Kelly Gleason maybe, in a different way, Jacob collier.
@@AndreasDelleske that is a really good call, geniuses all.
@@AndreasDelleske Jacob is definitely a genius... But as a musician, the piano in particular, he can't hold a candle to Keith... Jacob, has alien levels of understanding, but he doesn't have this thing that can't be described... But Keith does.
@@_aje You're demanding from Jacob that he has Keith's age? I'm pretty sure we find music and art more beautiful as we have heard it often, in different moods. Wait until you have heard works of Jacob more often... I won't compare them. But Jacob opens a world, similar to Bach. Jarrett shows us how beautiful the "old" world still is and there is nothing wrong with either of them.
As He lie down, pull back, frown, cry and laugh, and play with all his soul in each note, we cry, laugh, hold our hearts, and relax together.
Kim Taehyung brought me here. thank you for this song that comforts us during this time. Gwenchana ARMY. We will be okay till 2025 💜
In some mysterious way, Keith Jarrett gets inside a ballad, makes love to it, like no other pianist I have heard.
Great Performance
I call your mom ballad and she calls me Keith Jarret
Possibly the best instrumental version of this song I have ever had the privilege to hear.
Gracias Tae como siempre!! ❤
Started seeing tears come out of my eyes upon hearing this tune by Keith.
The effect his playing has uplifts my spirit
It's a special experience to watch it while drinking a beer at the end of the day.
This is so beautiful. Almost impossible to imagine that this was somehow improvised. Listen to the ending, the last top note in perfect balance with the bass note. Genius.
I've listened to this performance so many times, and feel anguished that I may only click 'like' once.
He's meditating, stretching his hands, body, neck, fingers using piano that creates beautiful sounds and massage my ear👂
that's where this Keith Jarret hype is all wrong. Just compare him to Oscar Peterson who is 100% superior to Keith Jarret. Dont get me wrong, they are both great players.
I feel so blessed to be able to listen to his gift
My father was a big fan of classical music. Presumably due his influence, I still stick to detailed expression and performance. Your play is genuine jazz and your every single touch is that of a master of classical music player's who practiced hundreds of thounds of times for a single tune to deliver what a music has to be heard. I still, and will remember the moment you overwhelmed me with your music a dozen of years ago. It was an unforgettable momment. I stood up clapping about 100 feets away from you but it seemed you already broke into my heart. You music lives in me, and it will. Cheers, Keith.
Mr. Jarrett is not a musician that plays music on the piano. He plums the depths of the emotions the composer experienced when he or she created the piece. Mr. Jarrett absorbs all the feeling that was invested in the piece to the point where he becomes the music and then; using every iota of his heart and soul, he expresses those emotions through the piano. Committing 100% of his being to the process, he provides us with a masterful performance every original composer would likely be proud of.
I’m so grateful I got a chance to see Keith Jarrett play a solo piano concert live before he stopped performing. It’s now a core memory for me.
Les notes de Keith Jarrett résonnent dans ma peau en prise directe. Une musique à fleur de cœur d'un pianiste magistral. Rare et précieux. Merci infiniment !
I am listening it because of having news telling his stroke from the media. Since late 1970’s I have been fun of his music. We all miss his performance of recording and concert with great thank. Hope healing on him and his family.
I saw him perform at Avery Fischer Hall in NY C/Lincoln Center in the 1980's, and he performed this as one of his encores too. Memorable.
I find myself wondering what the 180+ people who gave this a “thumbs down” heard...
Walter Hayley: This form and level of musical beauty was just WAY over their heads.
It's sort of like film critics.........they are "wanna be's" disappointed at their inabilities!!
They heard nothing.
No empathy and no attention span long enough to actually enjoy this blissful performance.
Deaf Souls
I have always been a fan of Mr. Jarrett. His ability to play a melody goes to my soul. When I first heard him play "Be My Love" I couldn't stop the tear in my eye. He knows the lyrics and plays to them. A truly gifted musician. His playing influenced me like no other pianist.
The genius of this arrangement. If you did not know the lyrics you would still get the message. And to those of you who do not play an instrument, this man truly knows his craft.
Taehyung's Ig? Beautiful melody
This is one of those ones you can listen to a thousand times
I hope that he gets over knowing that he had a stroke. A man of such enormous talent. But he can find comfort in knowing what a gift he has been to the entire world. Thank you Keith Jarret.
how he voices chords and spins the melody...amazing!
I bought the Koln Concert when it hit the music (record) stores. When I need, transcendent, I put it on and marvel at this man's ability to construct a melody...ON THE FLY.If you don't have it in your collection, you should. I wonder how many noticed the total lack of written music notation and pity the 197 who cannot appreciate genius when they HEAR IT! I'm also glad that he didn't "scat" sing over this,as he has over too many of his recordings. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you Keith. Life is grand. You show its splendor!
absolutely gorgeous. This is what having total expressive control of an instrument means.
How many times I saw this video I already don't know. In all of them, like it was the first time. Bravissimo!!!
Vraiment, vraiment beau et d’une douceur. Du pur bonheur de détente!
Koln Concert is my favorite! A master and a genius of his craft! God Bless Keith Jarrett who worked so beautifully through his graceful fingers! 🙏
To me, Keith Jarrett is in a class of its own. Jarrett is not playing like your usual pianist. He plays music inverted: instead of playing the notes, he uses notes to mark the space in between them. You can feel it: it expands and contracts. That's why he is so focused on dynamics: to accentuate that what he doesn't express. Only a true and original genius is capable of something like this. I just feel so darn lucky to witness this. Go with God, Keith.
Love you comment Pimp, much to ponder there.
@@tedl7538 Scarl to you...

He learn with Miles. The real music is silence...
"to accentuate what he doesn't express"? Lol no. All that exists here is what IS expressed.
In the future...other young and talented musicians may come along....but there will never be Another talent like KJ...this man has so much soul....so much love for music...there are no words to explain what happens when he sits at the piano...you just have to listen...and enjoy ...in wonderment....the mould has been broken...KJ you are a one off!!

I have listened to this man since the early '70s and was fortunate to see him live in San Francisco around 2006 or so. I love when he can take a standard and really bring out the absolute maximum of the original song and you can then see why many of these standards are so great.
Perfectly sublime. As tears fall from my eyes....
One of my favorite "close your eyes and immerse yourself" musicians. Wish the video didn't cut off the final reverberations of the last chord.
Close your eyes and you won't see him looking like he's about realease one on the dunny..
La primera vez que escuché esta pieza por este increible pianista quedé petrificado. Trasmite una emoción que parece de otro mundo .gracias gracias por existir .
Al igual que My song con jan gabaret
Quite likely the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. It is a great loss to the entire world that this man is no longer able to play. I hope he has other creative outlets to express himself with, as it's clear he has so much to express.
I just heard Mr. Jarrett lost the use of his left hand after 2 recent strokes and believes he'll never be performing in public again. Although i've heard some crazy stories about him accusing people of interrupting his performances, there is no doubt the man is extremely gifted and effortlessly molds melodies and harmonies as a sculptor would with a piece of clay. I wish him the best and hope he can recover from this tragedy.
There are some priceless stories...I know of one told to me by one of the great musicians alive today...amazing story
Beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song
Really good
Brilliant! It is truly staggering what humans are capable of.
The beauty of the instrument, the melody, the player, the recording, the harmonic choices, the interludes which only take you deeper into that chasm that is a Keith Jarret's music.
If ever one played his instrument towards the heavens, to please not just man, but God, such is this beautiful expression of the human spirit.
WOW!!!❤️😍 taetae!!! Thank you!!!💜💜
I love this guy, absolutely LOVE the way he plays, don't even mind how he uses his entire self to express the music. What always detracts, for me on a lot of his music, is when he starts making sounds. I always kind of look around to see who's humming to the tune and really get distracted. He does make mouth sounds on this one, thank you. It was lovely!
I agree. I don't buy his recordings because of his humming and other sounds that are totally distracting and annoying..
I listened to one of his albums for the first time years ago. I was terrified. Thought someone was in the house moaning. Made me laugh when I realised. I dont mind it, it's him.
It used to annoy me too but after some time i was able to block it out in the same way you block out airplane sounds if you live close to an airport
