  • Today I review not one but two of the most iconic luxury pilot watches of all time!
In this video I look at the IWC Mark XVIII Heritage as well as a version made in honour of the Miramar United States Marine and Navy Airbase.
After extensive experience with and reviews of Laco and Stowa (brands that have a similar history behind them) the question remains: who makes the best World War 2 inspired Flieger watches today? Join me as I look at the Mark XVIII heritage and Top Gun Miramar to find out!

I have Mark XVIII Heritage and it is very accurate. In first two years it was 0 seconds drift per day. Now it is about 2 seconds, after 4 years. I love it.

I agree! For a fraction of the cost Laco would look the same and performs admirably with its Miyota movement.
I purchased an A type and wore it for two weeks straight.
not even a Seiko on Saturday!
Great everyday watch and unique look.

Just wanted to say I appreciate so much your content and videos. There are so many sub-par watch reviews and videos out there, and all your content is very polished and informative, with a splash of entertainment value. Eg. intros, live chats, watch related travel. Your channel really is an asset to the watch enthusiast community.

I completely agree with your comments, and your opinion on each watch. That heritage is a looker. I really like the Mark line, and I've been in the market for a pilot watch for a while. These were on my short list but ended up picking up an Explorer, which I know is a different purpose watch but I didn't feel like I was throwing a bunch of money away.

Interesting how they lumed the Miramar version. You would perhaps think that they would make the lume much better being that it is named for the (arguably) best fighter pilot school. However, you cannot disagree with the quality of IWC. They have been doing it forever and are clearly a "Top Gun" brand. ;) I do, however, think I prefer the Laco (esp. the Munster type A). The historical authenticity of the markings just speaks to me in some way. I also appreciate the in-house movement of it. These are, without doubt, quality watches. Thank you so much for the work you do!
    Cheers!

I really like the tool aesthetic of the IWC pilot's watches - they're understated, classy and beautifully made. But, for that price point I expect an in house movement.

I recently purchased an IWC Pilots Chronograph ref. 3777.01 and can not take it off. I've tried in vein to do so. It's the darling of my small collection and fits my 7.9" wrist perfectly. Great job on the video TGV!

Great video, I’m a total flieger fanboy, they make up the bulk of my 12 watch collection, I’ve been tossing up between Sinn and IWC for my next acquisition, although at this moment IWC is a little more than I’m willing to pay so a nice Sinn will most likely win unless I find a used IWC at a decent price. On another note, I recently purchased a couple of suede straps in different colours by Fluco, you directly inspired my interest in Fluco, excellent value for money, thank you sir

  • @rvsmairspace6742

One is $5500 and the other $4000. For ETA and Sallita movements I think its too much especially when one can get a Fortis Flieger at a quarter of that. I really like the IWC big pilots but they are $13000... In any case, this was a great in depth review. This young chap makes the best watche reviews on youtube no question. If only he could make more reviews of high end watches that would be great.

I started off on my horological journey in 2009 buying an IWC as I tried to avoid Rolex brand due to bastardisation of their brand. However I realised that I bought my Mark XVI as an expensive ETA, whilst I like it I will not be buying another IWC at such price point. Nice review TGV....hit all the vital points.

IWC makes beautiful timepieces. Of the two, the Heritage appeals to me the most. The Miramar is a bit disappointing for all of the reasons you mentioned in the vid: polished case cheapens the look, that difficult to read red inner track, and lack of full lume. While not a flieger, I find the Portuguese my favorite IWC to date. Thanks for another great review, Tristano.

GREAT video footage and editing on that opening! Love the Flieger episodes and timepieces. One slight correction, MCAS Miramar is a Marine Corps Air Station, not a Marine air force base. When "Top Gun" was filmed, it was a Naval Air Station.

Hi TGV - great review and cool intro! As a pilot I also recommend the Sinn 103 TI TESTAF and Sinn 103 TI IFR which are officially certified aviators watches, even certified to replace the on-board

Maybe they’ll find your interest for one of your coming reviews...
    Have a great weekend

btw - On the use of Red on the Miramar dial; obviously IWC wanted more of a "tie-in"
with "Top Gun" 's Red, White and Blue movie logo, as on the poster, and otherwise shown on the screw-down Titanium back (machined ??? ). The two Navy Fighter Weapons School insignia "patches"("badges" in the UK) I'm familiar with; Red is the prominent color. Also, starting with pilots serving with Chennault; both the AVG (an O.S.S. operation). And later his 14th A.F. A Red Silk lining in a leather flight jacket; instead of the original G.I. brown cotton one, indicated the sign of a seasoned pilot ... Most often, an ACE (5 or more aerial victories).

Wow, lots of negativity in the comments here. Nobody's making you buy an IWC, guys. I got a Mark XVIII Le Petit Prince earlier this year and I love it. Easily my most legible watch and a great size, too. Bought it slightly used for $2.5k. Great value for a watch with this type of build quality and heritage. I don't think you can compare IWC to Stowa or Laco. While I love both those brands, IWC is on another level in regards to quality, finishing and brand recognition. Great video TGV! Oh and here's a snap of mine on a brown Colareb racing strap: instagram.com/p/BmS30JkHKK-/?taken-by=jp_melbs

I can appreciate the irony, yes. Are you saying that's a reason not to buy that watch? That's ridiculous. The partnership that IWC are doing with the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Foundation is helping children in need and IWC has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the foundation oiver the years.

The Mark XVIII Heritage checks both boxes for me of Flieger Watch and Field Watch, with a sprinkle of Vintage Watch feel thrown into the mix for good measure. I'd really prefer it without the date window though. Agree that 100m WR would have been much better and make the watch a pretty killer all-rounder.

Love IWC and love fliegers but I'll never own an IWC flieger until they remove the verbiage from the dial. Authentic fliegers have sterile dials. Great video, as always.

  • @esa062
    @esa062 6 років тому

I quite like the Miramar. That grey dial looks good on that case. I would prefer a non-scredown onion crown and no military references in the back, but those are minor. I think these days blued hands are so common, that it is a plus to have something else. The red hour ring is not very legible, but it's also not needed for anything, unless you actually don't know the hour by hand position.

Like you I much prefer the Mk XVIII. What were they thinking with the red hour ring on the Miramar? I actually prefer Type B fliegers that omit the hour ring. You know what those numbers are anyway; why clutter up the dial (especially in illegible red). I'm not a fan of the mirror finish on a tool watch. Now that the Heritage Mk XX is available, do you like it better than the XVIII?

Your audio/video background is apparent. Nicely done as always. Good background history. Miramar is a great visit if you love jets. A memorable visit. Amazing pilots and an adrenaline experience for the jet fighter fan. The IWC is minimal IMO and could have more action taking place in the dial. Better aesthetics would push it to another level. Excellent research as well TGV, until next time Sir. Best wishes my friend.

At least the SNK809's hour indices are legible at a glance. The Mirimar's choice of red disappears against the grey. Such a poor design choice.

  • @JungleEddie

At any price, my first choice for a pilot's watch would be the Stowa Flieger Klassik Sport. It is a 43mm A Type with a screw down crown and case back for 200m water resistance and a Top Grade ETA 2824-2 movement.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  6 років тому

A VERY worthy first choice. It would be probably be my choice too but in a smaller size obviously and if I wasn't so happy with my Sinn of course ;-)

Unfortunately the 40mm does not have the screw down crown and is only 50m water resistant or I would do the same. I am a one watch guy and I like to go swimming from time to time. As for the review watches, I am reluctant to go with alternative materials in a heritage design. It just seems off to me. I feel the same way about gold Submariners. Your Sinn is an awesome everyday watch but I am not a fan of countdown bezels. If it had a 1 to 12 numbering so I could use it as a duel timer I might go for one.

I enjoyed that. Thanks. IWC Big Pilot is on my want list, though I'd be looking at the larger 46.2mm ones. But then I have a 7.5in wrist that could accommodate such a size. I'd be looking at the IW5010-02 or IW5010-04 with the 8 day power reserve indicator and with the date at 6. Toss up between the gorgeous blue sunburst of the Le Petite Prince or more true to original Heritage Titanium. But I have plenty of time to mull that over while I wait until my budget is that price range.

    holy moly...
for that kind of money, you get all that antimagnetic and antishock tech and then some. for example, you can get a Damasko with an inhouse movement that will outlast these IWCs by centuries with all the insane overengineered tech they put in it.
or you can get a Glashutte Original Senator Navigator, which is superior in every single way.
or, for that kind of money, you can keep it traditional (and still antishock and antimagnetic), you can get a Tourby with a COSC certified handwind Unitas 6498-2 (not only cosc, but also higher beat and more power reserve), with beautiful decoration
or, get the same Tourby with the "base" Unitas (or a Stowa) and with the leftover money you can get a Longines Avigation Bigeye (and you'd have enough money left over for a decent microbrand diver to complete the collection).
IWC have some really cool watches (i'm still lusting after the Portuguese chrono), but these 2 are some of the worst value-for-money watches on the planet. even if i was insanely filthy rich, i still wouldn't even consider getting these

Lusted after some IWC Flieger style watches but couldn’t get past the price... so I ordered a STOWA 41mm with the Unitas Movement instead. Much happier.

Like the idea of ceramic, shame about the awful red inner scale. Overpriced IMHO, prefer the more authentic look of Laco & Stowa. Good review, cheers 👍👍

As we say in the Service ... "Copy all" and concur with your assessment on both watches. I bought a Stowa Flieger "Klassic" thanks to your videos and insight on German watches and I couldn't be more satisfied. In fact, I bought my wife the 36mm version because she loved the looks of the watch, she wears it everyday. Looking to get the Sinn 104 next. I do love the looks of the Miramar strap however I think it would go better with the Heritage. Honestly I'd like to try it on my Stowa Flieger. Does anyone know where I can get a strap like that?

Lovely watches with the sort of brand images most watch compnies would die for. However i do find it hard to justify their prices when they are packaging Sellita movements. I get it that watch manufacturers are not charities, are there to make money, have overheads etc but when Laco and Stowa can make superb flieger replicas and have the same sort of heritage using ETA and Sellita movements manufacturing in Germany for a quarter of the price it's hard to escape the feeling that you are paying for three letters rather than a watch.

Have to love IWC and one is on the wish list but I agree with TGV Laco and Stowa are wonderful more affordable brands. Currently own 90th Anniversary Stowa A Dial and a Laco Dortmund Erbstuck, beautiful done. If you have itch you have to scratch it :).

And I am kicking myself for passing on a Tutima flieger. The remaining one is asking $3k more. Again only used Sub dates and Sea Dwellers for save value holding and market if the future I.e. 20 yrs from now. But I ❤✈⌚ though.

I was just dreaming of the Mark XVIII! Great and timely video. I'd take the Sellita and shrug off the limited water resist for two and a half thousand. I think they'd make a killing at that price point.

Great review Tristano! I‘ve always been a big fan of IWC pilot‘s watches and that Heritage MARK XVIII is beautiful indeed - really love the matte grey titanium case. However the pricetag on both this and even more on the Miramar is hefty. In fact I can get a Damasko for around 1300 - 1400 Euros, which offers the same or even superior technical features and will look like new even after several years of daily use. Of course it doesn‘t have the IWC logo and Damasko is a relatively new player on the market, but does brand heritage really justify the pricepoint on these IWC models?
And yes, I fully agree with your opinion on the Miramar, it’s mediocre lume and the cheap looking ceramic case. I‘ve never understood why IWC only adds lume to the main markers on several of their models, including some of their classic pilot chronos.

    Hi TGV!
Lol that’s a very industrial music of the intro,
    yet cool though. :)
I tried on an IWC this week. White dial, printed black arabic numbers, very similar to this model or just simply the white version of yours. Anyway, I fall in love with the watch inmediately, actually it’s come most close to my heart, than anything else before.
    Model number: IW327002.
I’m not sure if anyone else knows the feeling
when rarely a watch feels like a very part of you,
not just something what is exiting or capturing, yet staying like a good, well used, liked good tool.
I really felt that the mentioned model has gone to me absolutely well, without any doubt or question. So, after my recent Tudor and Sinn my mentioned IWC is definitely my next grail.
    Great review!
    Happy regards: Robert

    Hi TGV
As always very stylish watches from IWC. And as always quite expensive too...
Clearly prefer the “Heritage” model although I would prefer the non-blued hands on that one which would make it look even more as a vintage tool watch. Blued hands is more for a dress watch in my opinion...
Speaking of vintage watches...it could be interesting to see a “Luftwaffe 5” IWC compared to a “Dirty Dozen” ditto now that IWC was the only manufacturer delivering to both parties. WW2 in the flesh...
    Keep up the good work👍

Excellent review as always, Tristano! I’m a big fan of Fliegers, but I agree that I’ve seen a number of them from other manufacturers that are better, especially considering their prices. Particularly the Top Gun model, the red just doesn’t work. I’ve got an Archimede B. Uhr bronze on my wishlist!

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 6 років тому

Nice pair. But, I agree the A dial is the better one. Not keen on the ceramic case and overly modern design and elements of the B dial example. I would prefer a Flieger to be as true and classic as possible. As such, for at least the half the cost, I would prefer a Flieger from Laco. One of their original pilot watches in 42mm (the new 39mm is just a bit too dainty for a Flieger and don't care for the 18mm strap size). I really like the custom faux aged treatment they do and you can buy. They have the history, the original design and proportion (in 42mm scale) and because of all that, they are allowed the artistic license to age their watches accordingly for a very authentic look and feel.

great review! but I like more classic steel watches than titanium or ceramic cases..according to the list of materials from IWC stainless steel is better protected from breakage instead of titanium or ceramic...and 11mm is just too slim for my taste. but great video like always
