I remember incredible rains in 93. I had some kind of leak in my very old car that I could not afford to replace that used to have an inch of water in the bottom when I would come out to drive to work. I lived behind my landlord and he had a drainage system in the yard that led to a cistern with two pumps in it. 10 days after the rain stopped that year, the pumps were automatically still coming on several times a day to drain that cistern.
And speaking of tides rather than the river, I attended a lecture several years ago by a professor who specialized in studying sea levels around the world. He mostly just talked about the principles involved, but at the end, somebody asked him to be honest and give his advice. He said I have one word for you: retreat. I don’t know how people ride on the water going to be compensated, but it would be nuts to keep trying to preserve a lot of these places. The professor said the biggest problem that he saw was that the people who make the decisions are not interested in facts.
