I had the pleasure of seeing John Denver in a small concert in Louisville Kentucky shortly after the Album "Poems, Prayers, & Promises" came out. It was in the fall of 1971 & my wife and I were newly married. The concert was held in an old movie theater & was not well publicised on the radio. I had been listening to the album since it first came out so I convinced my new wife to go with me. When we arrived there were hardly any people in attendance. Our seats were in the 2nd row center. By the time John came out to perform there were only about 300 people in the entire theater. After he did a couple of songs, he came down to the edge of the stage and sat on the edge & talked to the "crowd". He said he wasn't disappointed because this made the concert more "intimate". He then invited all the people in the distant "cheap seats" to come down front and just pretend he was performing in their living room. It was perfect! It was the best concert I ever attended. He sang a couple of songs just sitting on the edge of the stage, then moved to a stool & played every song from the new album & a bunch of others. He was funny, charming, and genuine. I was a John Denver fan forever after.

My wife and I saw John at the Saenger in New Orleans, shortly after "Calypso" was released with Oliva newton John's haunting background vocals. John came out wearing a Hawaiian print shirt and white pants. He had no band with him, only a few guitars and a reel to reel deck. When he sang "Calypso" he played the reel to reel which had Olivia's background vocals on it. It was a simple, no frills concert which felt like John was singing only to us, even thought the Saenger was jammed packed. Truly a concert to remember...beautiful sweet memories.

John Denver honestly was a song's best friend! A brilliant lyricist, composer/arranger, musician, multi-instrumentalist who loved the earth with passion that very, very few people possess. He was a huge advocate for animals/animal rights and cared greatly for the environment. It isn't so much that he spoke out about the things he was passionate about but he didn't just talk the talk....he walked the walk and proved it constantly!! We lost an incredible human being when he passed away. Lucky for us, he left his music and his charities with us. He was one-of-a-kind for sure! His voice is so strong and pure...I never get tired of listening to him sing, His perfect pitch and vocal control are on a completely different level. May he RIP.

John Denver wrote songs based on compassion, and feelings. He wrote songs from the heart. I watched him perform in person, and was quite impressed. Sadly he passed away tragically and his legends still lives on in the works of accomplishments that he has succeeded quite successfully in life. He will always be in our hearts, and in our minds as we journey onwards in life.

Don't want to ruffle any feathers, but I noticed 11 dislikes, which tells me that the general public knows absolutely nothing about good music.
I'm not saying this because I'm a John Denver fan, because I don't own a single one of his recordings, however he was a talented "Artist" who sang, and wrote, with his heart and soul, and that's what great Artistry is all about.
So John Denver fan or not, it's a no-brainer not to recognize this guy was a great artist.
Furthermore, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't good. That's what the uneducated musical numb skull believes.
If I like it, it's good, and if I don't like it, it sucks lol.
But the reality is that you're no more qualified to judge music then you are to critique an open heart procedure, because you know nothing about either one.
So to the 11 who couldn't appreciate this, it isn't about if you like the tune or not, because if you don't like the tune you don't have to listen to it or buy it.
But since it's an artistic endeavor, why can't you just appreciate it and simply recognize it as good work just because you don't like it?
You may not like liver, but your friend might, so does that make liver bad?
I can appreciate the fact that my friends like liver even though I don't. So dislike all you want, but it's because you're uneducated listeners as opposed too deep thinking people who have the emotional depth to appreciate a man emoting from his soul.
You're the kind of people that would give the Sistine Chapel a thumbs down, but give Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup can art a thumbs up, just because you like it lol
I wouldn't classify myself as a John Denver fan, but I would say that the man was genuine and talented and I can appreciate these performances for what they are....
Heartfelt, genuine, and very well performed.
So RIP Mr. Denver, because you graciously left a part your soul here for us in your music.
    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I fell in love with John Denver when I first heard his voice. Then I discovered that he wrote the song "leaving on a jet plane" which was the anthem of every kid raised in a military family. John Denver was an Air Force brat which teaches you how to move politely among people of different nationalities, stand up straight, have a firm handshake & respectfully call people sir.

Denver's interview is so natural and heart-felt. It's fun to just listen to the conversation, on top of his good performances. But you know what else? Johnny Carson... Great host and interviewer! And in all the breaks... THAT BAND! Holy cow. Nobody even mentions them, but they are really tearing it up in the commercial breaks. This was when real talent and entertainment were on television.

We went to a concert of his at red rocks during this Tour . He put on 3 nights of concerts . The last night we were there , he had sent his band on ahead to the next stop on the tour and did the whole concert with just him and his 12 string guitar . It was a amazing . Didn’t feel cheated at all . Just beautiful!

This was such a GREAT video to watch. It makes my heart very sad when I think about him not being here because he was such a strong influence on my life growing up. There’s nothing like playing his live album (LP) with all the audio artifacts. The CD copy of that album sounds perfect but the old LP is what drives the songs home for me. Namaste Brother John.

Colorado is most def the most beautiful state.... I remember the first time I saw the Rocky Mountains. My friend and I were driving there and as we approached Denver I couldn't see anything and thought "Pfffttt...", and then BOOM, I started seeing them very faintly and they just grew and grew and grew.... Took my breath completely away...

Not to detract from the conversation about the amazing and beautiful John Denver, but I was thrown out or Pat O'Briens with a few friends. We had a couple too many hurricanes and I tried to join the piano player playing bass and he didn't care for that while a friend of mine hopped up and stage and said he was "cutting a rug" maybe it was the same piano player.

I grew up loving music there were few singer and bands mostly I liked certain songs but not the bands my family loved John Denver I loved most of all his music and anytime he was on TV I was right there in front. I learned to play guitar playing his songs the most . friends would kid me and a girlfriend I had calling us John Denver and Beth middler because of the songs we would sing . John sang in my key or I learned to sing in his I don't wich but I could hang with him most of the time there were few songs that I couldn't reach that key with him he had such range and carrying power now in my 60 I sound like a croaking frog but my love for his music still stands l love finding your post's his music still takes my back to my youth finding the beauty in songs and the memories of home
