@Pallavi after I learn from my doctor that my condition was neurological connected, I stay focus more on my mental health, I should say, I focused more on the possitive sides of my life, instead of worrying too much about my condition.
I noticed that everytime I am happy and more relax, my voice sounds good, but when I think too much and worry about everything especially when it comes to my problem, my voice sounds so bad..
It maybe sounds weird, but it is true, I noticed that I have voice when I am happy, I can even sing, but can't talk properly.
Voice rest can be a big help also, so minimize talking.
This is just based on my personal experience..

Thanks everyone for their input. I wish more people understood what we experience I have mixed SD complicated by surgery. I appreciate that in times of stress my voice is affected as my job which involves hours of speaking a day. What I would like to see is a move away from saying "relax and you will be better", "it's all in your head". Each person has their own story.

I can relate to this... people hardly understand our situation... the first suggestion they give is seek a doctor for help... where I have almost tried every single specialist... that's all they could advise....not bothered about people now....just worried about the future and stressed about the challenges we face in day to day life...hope somehow our life gets on track again.❤️❤️

im 19 and i suffer from this, i got it when i was 15, and ive struggled with talking so much that ive become extremely silent, i used to talk a lot to people, but now i almost never speak out loud. My voice suddenly breaks and is fades when i say words that include the letters "a,e,i,o,u,m,h" so its hard for me to say "hello" because the h,e and o will dissapear and people just hear wierd creaky noises while the two "ll" are perfectly sounding... i am so embarressed, i cant read out loud in school, cant speak normally in everyday conversations with my friends or family sometimes, cant talk normally on the phone, and this has given me SO much anxiety, i feel like im mute sometimes. i dont know what to do with my voice, i used to love singing but i cannot sing anymore or talk, i hate it so much

@carl0telli -I know it's hard. I struggle too with "h", "m" and sometimes just saying my name which starts with "m". I learned to practice with a close family member who understands my struggles with everyday conversations. When I'm alone, I think of questions folks might ask me, i.e. "What's your name?" or "How can I help you?" I also call stores just to ask their store hours or if they carry a certain product for phone practice. This helps me a lot! I exhale for like 2 seconds before I speak and exhale softly after speaking 4 or 5 words for good breath support during conversation. Don't give up! You're so young. The worst thing you can do is to stop talking. That's when you will feel hopeless! Keep talking and feel happy when you speak! Whenever you feel nervous or anxious, take a deep breath, raise your pitch a little whereby your voice feels comfortable and you can hear your words as you speak. Lastly, Pray and ask Jesus Christ to help you. He certainly helps me everyday. I hope these tips help you. Your speech will get better just don't quit! God bless you!

Dear. I posted my reply separately but I will do it again just to make sure you get it. I was diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dystonia 7 years ago. Want to share my story in the hope it could potentially help you (I realize each case is unique). I am not sure about the cause but I did overwork myself for 20 years. Way overdid it with the amount of stress. One day I woke up with a very sharp pain in my throat. Like a small blade or needle was stuck in my throat. That's how it started. The sharp pain. It didn't go away. Then I started getting pain alongside my throat running up all the way along my left neck to my ear and underneath my teeth. That bad was bad. I had to stretch my left arm constantly even while driving to manage. I still have that sometime. At the same time I lost my voice. Could not talk a word. Only whisper with great effort and great pain. I thought it was a cold but it lasted for weeks. Then months. I went to Kaiser Neurology. First neurologist couldn't find anything wrong. Second neurologist was more specialized in vocal cords. I had to go to the hospital and they inspected my vocal cords. I couldn't talk so it was very difficult to explain to them what was going on so my parents joined and they were able to talk for me. The second neurologist said that I had the vocal cords of an 80 year old man although I was only 43 years old. She couldn't understand why so she sent me to another even more specialized neurologist. He found out I had vocal cord dystonia. He started doing botox injections every 3 months. It is very expensive but I have my Kaiser insurance. So I went every 3 months. Results were minimal at first. But I kept going for two years. Maybe longer. They also gave me a muscle relaxer called Tizanidine. Slowly my pain started to subside. Slowly I was able to talk again. 7 years later and I can speak but not like I used to. Sometimes it still hurts to talk. Sometimes my voice tonality goes off sometimes (voice pitch goes too high). But it is much better than when it started. I have found that with stress the symptoms return. So I had to change my life. I cannot work as much as before. My wife of 22 years left me. She said I was making it up and couldn't accept I couldn't do my job as before. It affects not just your voice but also how you see things. I became more spiritual. I slowed down. I am still dealing with it but I can manage now. My wish is for you to be healed. Make sure to relax a lot. Meditate. Go to hot springs. Get massages. Do breathing exercises. Start working out or go for daily walks/hikes in nature. Swim. Try to relax your muscles by stretching them. Especially neck and shoulders. Stretching is so important. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Praying you may recover.
EDIT: I also had serious problems swallowing food during this time and always had to drink water while eating. I almost choked and couldn't breathe twice... I thought that was it but thankfully I had done meditation practices and was able to come out of it.

My voice went a year after spinal cord surgery at c3 to relieve pressure on my spinal cord. It started by sounding like I had laryngitis. And got progressively worse over time. It's been close to 10 years now with this voice condition which is frustrating at best. People don't realize how much air it takes to talk. I can't just jump into conversations anymore because I don't know what kind of sounds are going to come out. I can't sing anymore not even just for fun. It's a strange disability that almost caused me my job as a call center rep. I got moved into a position that I'm not constantly talking. Bottom line it sucks...

This is almost exactly my story, I work taking calls all day from home, suddenly in jan 2024 I had a sharp pain in my neck, my right side mainly. Lost my voice and since then its been 6 months and I can only recover partially because as soon as I am back to work I last 2 days then done the pain the dryness in the throat no matter how much water I drink, literally non stop water, and it travels to my ear as well where it begins episodes of loud ringing. Both ENTs cant see anything like nodules on my vocal cords which makes it harder to convince them. It's changing my life at 40. I am a stressed individual by nature, so I have to try to control that. But how can I when I can't work and how many medical leaves can I take before being let go.

@@agnosticmanquestionsall2409 Thank you for sharing and I understand what you are going through because I recognize all the symptoms you describe. You will have lots of people who will not understand what you are dealing with. I am sure you must have been working very hard for a long time under a lot of stress. Probably to provide for your family? Eventually your body says no. Where to go from here: 1) Stress is a trigger and it will always remain a trigger 2) Limit stress; easier said than done 3) Do Yoga or Stretching; Stretching is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT which is why I mention Yoga 4) You have to make some important life style changes; less financial pressure and hope your partner is understanding (mine filed for divorce). 5) Go to another ENT and ask them if you have vocal cord paralysis (a condition that causes the loss of control of the muscles that control the voice.) 6) Go to a neurologist who specialized in Dystonia (not all of them are knowledgeable). They may need to give you muscle relaxers or apply botox injections in your neck (this is very tricky so it can only be done by a specialized neurologist). I am in the Bay Area so if you need a reference for a neurologist let me know. Good luck brother. You will make it through. Life always changes. But you will make it through. I promise.
