- By the early 1970s, many first generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives. One of the most common replacement locomotives became the GP40-2. EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, turbocharged, 3000 horsepower engine in 1972. These locomotives were developed for service where higher horsepower and faster service were preferable. A major feature for the GP40-2 was the introduction of the “dash 2” modular electrical cabinet. For more than 40 years, the GP40-2 has worked main line freights, locals, switching jobs, yard service, and helper service. Many remain in service today.
These Athearn Genesis EMD GP40 2 Series Diesel Locomotives will look great on any HO scale layout or module for eras 1972 to current day.

Great announcement! Cannot wait for the UP 1413, I used to work on the real one. Now if only we could get another run of the standard UP 1300/1400/1500 rco/non-rco series GP40-2s in 2000+ paint
GM50: yes yes yes!
Bank account: no more please!
I’ve been wanting one of these for so long. Thank you Athearn!
Glad we could make you a locomotive you have wanted!
@@AthearnModelTrains the only problem is am I gonna be able to afford it when it comes out.
@@kylestevens6925 I still have my model from the first run, all it needs now is a set of headlights
Me too because I have been running that locomotive on Trainz it is awesome looking locomotive
Dang, hoping for more classic DRGW GP40-2s. Those I bought from the 2014 run and most had warped frames. Last batch was better but the leaves only 4 road numbers.
Love that train! I wish I didn’t have to spend like 200 dollars for a decent train though. I think I’ll get one of yours soon maybe if I can afford it.
does it run on 18” radius curves
Please Athearn, do the FEC units in N Scale!
Should I turn in my model of GM50 and get the updated version??
I've been waiting for as delivered Southern Pacific from the 1978 order. The Atlas one I bought is incorrect.
Good to hear! We are happy you like those as delivered SP GP40-2s.
HO, HO…it’s ALWAYS HO.
- Jan Brady after becoming an N scale model railroader.
😂🤣😂
We have some N scale this month, F89-F Auto Racks and FMC 5277 box cars. No GP40-2s in N though, but there are other manufacturers that make a nice GP40-2 in N.
Not in Rio Grande. I checked.
Now you do UP1413...
We take it you just spent months custom painting your own?
@@AthearnModelTrains A couple years ago a guy did the paint work for me, I just added ditch lights and LEDs recently but it's one of a kind. Come out with some darn modern genesis GP60s please for all us Modern guys who have switching layouts!
@@VSLAModelRR Its an unwritten rule among all of us model railroad manufactures to produce a certain model AFTER someone has custom painted one. All joking aside, great suggestion on the GP60, feel free to shoot us an email at athearn-productsuggestions@athearn.com
@@AthearnModelTrains So True, I submitted the suggestion a couple years back but I can re-submit. It's getting hard to find the Walthers Proto Gp60s anymore so we need some new ones!
