    I drove a roll off semi for years. Most of the time when I had to put and empty in the same spot as the load I had to drop the empty, pick up the load, drop that, pick up the empty and put it where it goes, then go get the load. All this in downtown Chicago, just finding a place to do all this was a challenge. Excellent job Michele.

    Driving a roll off truck was my first driving job. I never thought of pulling the full dumpster out like that. That's a really good idea that would save a lot of time.

      This is what the customer requested...everytime the dumpster is switched....they stop their operation until we are done to avoid accidents onsite....the quickest is to use the chain instead of sitting it down to move another....it would have been quicker if the dock officer would stop trying to help by pushing buttons to pack out the dumpster...

    People think I'm weird for actually WANTING to do this, lol. How should I get started? I know that you need a CDL A or B to drive one of the trucks, but. Should I just start as like, a residential helper or something until I can pay to take the class? Will some waste companies pay for your CDL class as long as you stay with them for a certain period of time? I now some of the OTR trucking companies do that but I'm not trying to drive a semi truck lol. Been into trash trucks since I was a little kid (probably like every other child, I just haven't grown out of that stage and probably never will lol).

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Shawn....first of all you are not weird for wanting to do this type of work! Second of all download the app DMV Genie and click on your state and start studying and also do to your local DMV to see if they offer a free CDL booklet to also study. Majority of the work can be learned this way! Most jobs in this field will not offer the contract to train new people you have to get your CDL first and then apply to get training! But starting as a helper on residential isn"t a bad idea...at least you would get an up close idea of whats expected just by watching! But, get those CDL to gain leverage for yourself! Good luck!

    yeo! that was sick! i been doin roll off for about 6 months with other guys that have 20-30 yrs experience...never seen that method used or taught...i always do a double rotate...but i’m all about saving a minute here a minute there...those all add up to shorten my 10-12 he per day shifts...so i’d love to give this a try the next opportunity i get. but i had one question...so the front rollers of the compactor that’s on the ground...only raise off the ground during turns??? is there a way to have them slightly raised while pulling straight forward? just asking in case the location has plenty of room to pull ahead but not side to side...great video!!!!
    or...is it even necessary to have the rollers slightly off the ground at all if i were to pull forward with both cans like 20-30 yds...set the one back down...carefully back around it...and put the one i brought on truck back onto A Frame...also would this method work with open tops???? i don’t see why not but again i’ve never tried that maneuver

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  5 років тому +1

      This method works for all cans...no matter the size...I have been doing this for 26 years and it makes for a quicker switch...BUT...if there is new concrete or asphalt...I do not recommend this method because depending on the weight of full container...it could leave indentations or roll marks... and if you are pulling container forward...go slow to illiminate scuffs...good luck

    • @ak-qs9ni
      @ak-qs9ni 5 років тому +1

      26 years!!! it shows! thank u for response!!! one more question...i went shopping for a tow chain but wasn’t sure what grade and length to purchase...the strongest one available at store was good for like 6,000 pounds...would that be ok for the purpose i’d be using it for??? some of those cans as u know can weigh quite a bit more than 6k

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  5 років тому +1

      @@ak-qs9ni Hi Anthony....I went to Lowe's hardware to purchase the chain....the strongest one they had...but if the container is heavy...DO NOT DO THE CHAIN METHOD...you will tear up the ground....you have to use good judgement when using the chain....its quick and easy to switch out cans but please use good judgement when doing this!

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  6 років тому +1

      beverwyck1 thanks for viewing my video...normally that would be the route that I would take but, the old man on the dock started pushing the button to compact the unit and it pushed the trash that was in the shoot and wedged it between the container and unit which made me pull it out further than normal....a lot of that was edited out...he knew that I was making a video and thought that he was helping! I told him whenever you see the truck pull up...don't touch anything! He was very apologetic and said that it wouldn't happen again but, we shall see...he is very hardheaded might I add...

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  5 років тому +3

      The best advice i can say is be aware of your surroundings when approaching a pick up site! Pay attention to everything! Look up for power lines, tree limbs, overhangs of all kinds, fire hydrants, water meters, cracks in driveways to avoid being blamed for anything and objects around container that could potentially be damaged while loading container. Once you have checked the area where you will be picking up the dumpster... back up to it safely and then raise your boom and hook cable to prepare to load dumpster. While you are out of the truck check that the dumpster door is secured and container is leveled to avoid dropping debris on highway/ cars while you are transporting it to the dump! It's easier to do this while the dumpster is on the ground! If the container is sitting on uneven ground...you are going to have to drag it out a little to even ground so that it doesn't jump off the frame of the truck while you are loading it. Do not ever drag a can with just the cable alone. Load the dumpster on the end of the boom first by tightening your cable to avoid breaking the cable or shredding it! Now that it is on even ground.....it's time to load the dumpster. Depending on your skills and coordination....you can release the brake while the truck is in neutral and let the dumpster pull the truck underneath the dumpster while you are steering the truck and covering the break. As the container comes onto the truck over the rear fender, lower the boom to meet the containers guide tracks under the container. At this point it is very critical to pay attention because you don't want to lose the dumpster by it jumping the rails depending on how straight (lined up) you are to the container with the truck! The more you load the can, the more you lower the boom but, you are constantly watching it until it is completely on the truck. This goes for all types and sizes of dumpsters! Once it is loaded on the truck, pull the air brake, get out and tarp your load if its an open top can, and apply your mandatory safety straps on the rear truck frame to avoid getting a ticket! It's a fun job....I have been doing this for over 25 years.... I have trained so many....and I love it.....it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it! The main thing is to always pay attention! Hope this helps...PS right now I have about 3 videos up concerning roll off...go take a look at them....and watch the things I do when loading the dumpster...You have to get in a routine to make sure you do everything all the time to cover yourself!

      Michele Little Things thank you so much!! I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply so quickly! I have two final questions in regards to the hours. Right now I work about 50hrs a week and I work out of a non union base. I heard from other drivers that it’s incentive based pay. I wanted to know if you could tell me if it’s a significant pay increase from residential to roll off and how many hours a day will I have to work. The only thing I prefer about resi is that I know what time I’m going to get off each day will I have any control on my day to day work load or will the demand dictate that aspect of it and if so how many hours a week should I expected work. Thanks again for your insight you are truly a great example of a WM employee!

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  5 років тому

      @@cball579 Thank you so much...some places pay incentive based on areas ( how ever many containers in that area based on how quick to service them will determine the funds earned for that area on a daily basis), some pay by day rate (one flat rate for the day no matter how many cans or hours worked in a day), and others pay hourly... I work over 50 hours a week and paid hourly and non union based as well. My route on a daily basis could change due to the importance of a stops needs. The landfills close at a certain time and according to the lay out of your route will determine your ending time of the day.....so get your hustle game up....but be safe at the same time to complete your stops in a timely manner before the landfill closes....Sometimes you can't get everything....but try your best too....if you have cans that have not been serviced....it's best to inform the dispatcher ahead of time, maybe they could get someone to help you with a stop or two....??!! PS avoid coming in toooo early the dispatcher will send you back out to get a so called " hot one that needs to go" which will put you back out there for about 2.5 hours more! So use your time wisely and stay busy that way your time goes by pretty quickly! Good luck!

    How did you get into trucking or roll off?

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  6 років тому +1

      Years ago...1994 to be exact...my brother asked me to ride with him...he was a roll off driver long before I was...and sitting high and looking down gave me another perspective. He let me drive in an open parking lot and the rest was history...I studied the CDL book from the DMV for about 3 to 4 months, took the test, and passed and he let me drive his truck for the walk around inspection and driving test...but before anything took place I had to take a DOT physical to be certified to drive such a big piece of equipment....been driving for 25 years now! And its still challenging and fun!

      Hey thanks so much for watching.. .if you have your CDL....ASL would be the easiest spot to get into on the residential side...I would say go for it! Good luck as well! Good vibes coming your way pal!

      Thanks Ma’am. Yes I’ve been Class A trucking for 22 years but it’s my child dream to run an ASL. We only 1 company that runs my entire city and they’re very hard to get in with. But I keep trying.

    • @micheletlittle
      @micheletlittle  5 років тому

      depends on your experience and time in...I know some people who have been in roll off for more than 28 years making $32 an hour...but the least you make also depends on your experience...maybe $17 starting out in some places...
