      @@Rybonator I really do recommend the mini dice mold with UV resin, it works really well. I mostly just make earrings with it (which it is perfect for), but it works best with some force on the lid to really minimize the flashing. For epoxy I might recommend putting something on top of it while curing because if you squish it and then release, you just add bubbles. Hopefully this helps for if you do the mini dice (if you haven't already filmed it)

    Oh yay love the review videos. Good or bad it’s always nice to hear your take on things and see any issues that might arise. While I would definitely like to see the tiny dice mold just to see if it works, it might also be nice to see another mold making video where you make your own tiny dice mold. I’m sure there are a lot of different challenges when it comes to making something on such a small scale and it would be cool to see that journey. Plus I bet you could use it to do cool things with leftover resin from bigger dice projects as long as it doesn’t get too hard between pours.

    I am glad that I am not the only one who has been having issues with them. I would recommend not trying the chonk as you will be bitterly disappointed with the voids it produces. As for the mini dice mold, you need a flat metal nozzle and either a squeeze bottle or syringe to get the resin down into the small hole in the top. The keys are good, but you will need elastic bands holding it together or your resin will flow out the bottom of the mold. I went back to making molds with dragonskin and sortaclear from Smooth-On and not one void in a dice from them yet. Hope this helps!!

It started with the box which was 6 months delayed (They only gave the chonk and mini dice in the box the thank you for not canceling your order after 6 months of uncertainty was a free tiny bottle of S+T pigment) When they released the dice set it was so similarly priced to DiceyEncounters that I was better off getting a mold from them! Easy to see where the problem is, after the squish of the top part of the mold is squeezes out any extra and leaves the air bubbles inside. Then when the pressure pot compresses the air there is no extra resin to fill in the void... As you say not made by a person who actually has tried dice making.

    so, I get the Elves Box and Disney boxes; I have the new mini dice and the giant d20, plus their Kingdom Hearts dice molds. What confused me is that on their Kingdom Hearts mold, the special emblem is on the LID as 1 instead of on the bottom to take up the highest value. Which means that whoever made that design decision doesn't know gaming dice.
    And I've yet to see S&T mention a pressure pot or vacuum chamber with any of their molds. I feel like they specialize in small, UV resin crafts, and not really in thicker projects.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator  2 роки тому +3

      They did the logo on the lid so that they didn't have to REMAKE all the bottoms. Easier to just pop on a new lid than do the bottom stuff. So that's why it's on the 1 :/
      But yeah, they are mostly an ART thing, not a dice/useable resin company I have found

    I had a feeling that would be the case with these mold. My Chonk D20 mold from the box is horribly off center and I have to make sure the top is placed a certain way for it to be center and when working with resin you sometimes don't have time to make sure it sits 100% right. I am unsure if S&T actually have a pressure pot to test these molds in from what I have seen them talk about. Which would explain why the molds are awful with pressure pots. Dice with voids and bubbles is not what anyone wants.

    Here's the thing: S&T is never going to improve, because their dice molds are cheap crap mass-manufactured in China. They don't make the molds themselves, they buy them wholesale without any care or thought for quality. Look on alibaba/aliexpress and wish, and you will find those exact same molds. That is why there is no consistency with their design, and why sometimes their molds are very obviously ripped off a custom dice maker's style (Both shape and font). Honestly, the only way I'd ever use anything else from them is if THEY paid ME.

    Would like to see the big D20 review, mostly because I got one, and haven't found it to be too bad aside from the extra flashing around the middle of the 3 part mold. Other issues I've been putting down to not having a pressure pot combined with it being big enough to potentially warrant needing to be done in 2 pours.
    Any I've tried to do as a single pour just ended up with voids on the 1 face where the bubbles have risen up during curing. Whereas doing them in 2 pours has resulted in no voids, but there is usually a visible row of bubbles between the two layers of resin. So far I've tried making 5 dice, 1 I did as one big pour, and there was just far too much air in the resin, so voids galore, but the others have come out as reasonable looking raw dice (not sanded/polished them yet)
    However i've got a few bits and bobs ready to try and make my own bodged together pressure pot to see if that helps with the air bubbles so I can also make transparent dice xD

    These molds look like the kids are not made WITH the base, as in they are all same at the same time with separate pieces, and now how we make molds by using stuff like mold release/vaseline over top with more silicone over the existing mold. to make the lid. But rather it looks more like 3d printed parts for all the pieces that the silicones poured over to make the whole mold at the same time. Thus they do fit together but don't form that good a seal and allow air to slip in.
    To be fair you don't need a very thick lid. All of my molds are 40mm square for a full standard size. That means for the d20 I have 10mm along all the edges, including the lid and I don't have issues with bubbles like that. It's more along how well of a seal the lid creates to the mold so when the pressure pots are put into play it sucks the lid down solid and does not let any air slip in. (seen this with clear molds and putting a go pro onside to see what it does). But then we are making our lids by pouring silicone over top the existing mold and master.

      They really specialize more in resin crafting molds (things like trinket boxes and trays), but I'd guess they keep revisiting them because their subscription box sold out much faster than usual the first few times they had dice. And probably people are still willing to give them another chance since the subscription is half of what the molds themselves are listed for.

      @@tawesssoabbox I wouldn't call any of them "vast" improvements. It took them 4 videos worth of mold styles to put usable keys and registrations on a set. Their molds still have unacceptable flaws like the sloppy flashing on the molds themselves. But I guess making molds for dice that have all the same sized faces is applauseworthy? This set costs about 100$ and is full of basic mistakes. Their entire business is made on silicone molds, you'd think they'd maybe know what they're doing.

      @@elogan5817 Unless they totally switch gears in the future, Sophie & Toffee is not a gaming dice mold company - their products are geared more for resin crafters who are into making things such as keychain charms and trinkets, and not necessarily "useable" resin pieces.
      This newest set they've come out with IS too expensive and lacking quality control even for making the dice into charms or decoration-only pieces, but it does have some improvements over their first tries at making dice molds. They tend to actually listen to customer feedback, so may try making newer dice molds in the future, but for making sellable/playable resin dice I'd just make my own following one of Rybonator's dice mold tutorials.

    • @elogan5817
      @elogan5817 2 роки тому

      @@geminidragon33 This isn't a question of what would be the most fiscally sound decision for people who want to get into dicemaking, That would always be DIY, because you trade upfront cost for effort.
      The point I was making is that, no matter if this is their main focus or not, the combination of price and multiple useless iterations of the base product is unacceptable. Unbelievable too. If a cook is used to making italian food but wants to sell japanese food, you'd at least expect them to look up a recipe or two. S&T, in this analogy, is ALREADY specializing in their specific kind of mold type (silicon molds) but continuously ignoring both feedback and common sense. There seems to be no quality control, no second thought behind the design of their products.
      If they don't care about giving people the ability to make usable dice, that's understandable. But creating expensive bullshit molds to catch people who don't know better is bordering on sinister.

    The dice size thing is my problem with Artisan Dice (along with a lot of other things). I just can't get behind the look. Since they're machined, the longest distance across any die is the same, so the d6 (a cube of this longest dimension) looks huge compared to the rest. All the dice could fit inside the d6, since they all share that longest dimension. Setting aside all the other issues with the company, I could never own Artisan Dice because I hate the way they look.

    I was super disappointed with the jumbo d20 mold. I used it once and tried a petri poor. The alcohol ink fused the silicone to the resin and ruined it.

    I just bought this set and the chonk mould literally about 4 hours ago...£120 🫣 damn I'm gutted, I thought they'd be a good size set and faultless...those moulds look like it's a set of minis 🤦🏻‍♀️
    I've just been back to their website and left a message asking for a refund but no reply on their live chat. Fingers 🤞🏻 I don't lose my cash to substandard, I couldn't see anything relating to " how to cancel an order" 😮‍💨

    Great review. I'm glad you mentioned the issue with having a large lip on the d20. Had I known that the first time I bought dice molds I would have started by making my own.
    On a different note I've been making Galaxy style dice using purple, blue, and pink with a bit of glitter mixed in then lightly swirling them. I think you would enjoy making some of the same.
