  • This video features my homemade ca. 1960's Fender Vibro-Champ, using the AA764 schematic with upgrades from the AB764 schematic. Included is a detailed analysis of the cabinet, chassis, circuit, and overall construction features. Hints and suggestions for scratch building amplifiers are provided, and the amp is played with and without the tremolo effect. I was not thrilled with the somewhat muffled tone from the speaker used in the video, and subsequently replaced it with a nice vintage Jensen C12Q that provided a huge improvement in clarity and frequency response.

    Crickey Doug.....I know I keep saying it, but another wonderful amp........These are just awesome and show the standard and old world skill we just don't see anymore......things like this have become so mass produced looking and slapped together these days.
    I am not a guitarist sadly, but these amps of yours make me want to be one !! .........sorry for saying this every time I watch one of your video's but I really take my hat of to both you and david for keeping the skill and craftsmanship of this going..........its the one great thing about UA-cam.....we get to see this stuff........cheers again.

    By coincidence, I recently ordered and received an (Italian) Jensen C10R for my Fender Princeton 5F2-A amp. I love it. Even compared to the vintage Jensen's I have in my other amps, it sounds great....and didn't require a lot of break-in time to get that way. My favorite source for speakers is Musician's Friend.....free shipping.....ultra-fast delivery.....lowest prices I've seen. I recommend them.

    Nice design with that retro look. Nice point to point wiring. The grille cloth seems to fit for the period, but the
    highs might be attenuated slightly as if the speaker was placed behind a heavy curtain.
    Cathode bias tremelo, simple but effective.

    Are you familiar with Garnet amps out of Canada from the 60's-80's? I have recently acquired on of the "Stencil" models, the d15tr. This is what eventually led me to your videos. I am so appreciative for them. I have also got the book/ schematic listings of the late Gar Gillies owner of Garnet. He was the maker of the "Herzog" which gave The Guess Who the sound of "American Woman". Fascinating read and with what I have learned from your videos I can understand and appreciate so much more. Thanks for that. A tip of the hat to Rusty and Jack also.

      Greetings, Nusior. It's great to hear from you. Re the mysterious 12" speakers, can you find any numbers printed on the basket rim? As you probably know, virtually all speakers can be identified and their date of manufacture can be determined by this number code. For instance: 220 is Jensen, 328 is Utah, 285 is Rola, etc.

      docs.google.com/file/d/0B16LIiIaNEylY3Z5QXl3dWh0Q0ZiYlRoOXJFU1JsU0JNQUFr/edit?pli=1
      I'm not sure about the date. How can You tell if it's 45th week of '53 or '63?
      Cheers

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  10 років тому

      Nusior, I found an Ebay ad for identical Jensen speakers that came in a Heathkit AS-10 speaker.....which was probably used for a HiFi or stereo: www.ebay.com/itm/Heathkit-AS-10-Drivers-TWO-Jensen-Special-Design-Vintage-8-Woofers-220201-/151391997433?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item233faa8df9
      Re how to tell if it's '53 or '63, you have to go with whichever date agrees with the speaker's apparent vintage. In this case, definitely the later date.
      Re the other, unmarked speaker(s). It appears to have a cast aluminum basket, which seems relatively modern to me. With the square magnet and "Made in England" it may well be a Celestion, from the '80's or 90's.....but I am just guessing.

  • @potatohead5309
    @potatohead5309 9 років тому

    Hi, nice build.
    I think your explanation of the input and how I think it works are different though. Take a look at it again and think of the voltage divider circuits that get created when plugging into either jack 1 or jack 2 and look at how that 1 Meg resistor comes into play in setting up both the input impedance and the triode.
    As I understand it:
    When you plug into input 1 your input impedance is 1 Meg. The 68ks in parallel form 34k which limits current to the grid (NOT a problem), eliminates parasitic oscillation in the tube and unwanted radio broadcasts (always a problem). This gives you a high Z input that, for all intents and purposes, sends 100% of the source voltage to the first triode.
    When you plug into input 2, two things happen. Because the switch on input 1 remains closed, the 1M resistor is bypassed. The signal from the source sees 136k input impedance. This will alter how most pickups sound. The two 68k resistors are in series from the signal to ground and act as the voltage divider, sending 1/2 of the signal to the triode and 1/2 to ground making it a -3 db input.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_divider

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 років тому

      Greetings, PH. I see your point and agree with your analysis. My narrative was addressing the resistance between the input and grid rather than between the input and ground, which has a more significant effect. Thanks for your input.

    Doug -- again, your attention to detail and care put into your craft is top-shelf. I have a question about the inside-mounted grill cloth. In your scratch-built 5F1 video series, you use lath to set off the cloth from the front of the speaker baffle. Is the frame in front a decorative piece set over the "real" baffle that's recessed beneath (and constructed as in the Champ video series)?

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 років тому

      Jason Thorpe Thanks, Jason. Yes, the decorative frame is set over the grill cloth and baffle, but the grill cloth is attached directly to the baffle, not spaced away from it as it was in the Champ video. It would have been quite possible to space it away, but in this particular case, I didn't.

    A very excellent job on the Vibro Champ build Uncle Doug! I learned a lot, example how the Input Jacks operate & the 4 or 8 Ohm Output Transformer circuits ect. Thank You.
    I am making a parts list to fabricate one of these into an Amp Head. The steel cabinet I am using, used to be a vintage Automotive Coil, Condenser Tester that was missing parts. I have stripped the remaining unusable parts out & altered the chassis to accommodate all necessary parts. I was looking at the schematic & see the Tremolo has no "On Off" switch? Is it possible the Intensity simply just fades it out with the Intensity control turned all one way?

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  3 роки тому

      Yes, the intensity control can effectively turn off the effect, but it is still present in the background if you monitor the plate current within the output tube. I honestly think a piggyback on off switch on the intensity control, properly wired, would be a good addition, allowing for a full shutoff.

    • @kevinsvpbiscayne

    Hello again Uncle Doug. I was making my parts list to build my Fender Vibro - Champ to find the resisters I have been using in the past have a 350 working Volt & 600 Volt Over Load , 2 Watt Metal Oxide. I see some of the Circuits in the Champ run as high as 420 volts. Would this be an issue? I will paste the Data sheet from Antique Electronic Supply. Thank You Uncle Doug. Sincere Kevin Clark.
    Metal Oxide resistors are for applications where stability under high temperature conditions is required. Sold in multiples of 5.
    2 watt
    ±5% tolerance
    -55° C to 240° C operating range (derated over 70° C)
    350 V working, 600 V overload
    Excellent flame retardant coating

  • @billedwards2657

    It's only a 3 1/2 year old video but! What did fender do on their production models for that 6V transformer winding if they didn't add a resistance ground? The schem here shows a grounded winding, which I could see getting noise in it. Are you just changing the impedance on that line?

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 років тому

      The schematic shows no 6VAC center tap and no "virtual" center tap, so I guess they just expected the owner to tolerate a little hum (it's not inevitable, but likely). To save wire and labor, they grounded one of the 6VAC leads and ran the other to one side of each tube filament, then grounded the other side of the filament.....which completed the filament circuit, but again, not a good idea. This was probably done to reduce building time and cost.

    • @billedwards2657
      @billedwards2657 7 років тому

      Uncle Doug when they didn't ground power cords.. yeah! But if you ground the primary side of that xfmr on the cord and the secondary in the chassis.. should provide ISO. Looks like I have to build one and find out lol

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 років тому

      Electricity always returns to its immediate source, which in this case is the secondary 6VAC winding of the power transformer. It had no affinity to the chassis ground, which affects only the primary circuit. Circuits using the chassis as half of the filament wiring work OK with a grounded chassis. Try it and see :)

    Hello Doug! Very nice looking and sounding build! I'm about to do my first scratch build of a Champ AA764 without the tremolo circuit. I'm done with kits is all I can say.
    A noob question for you; Can I use 1w resistors instead of 1/2w for this project? 1w and 2w resistors is all I've got my hands on for the moment, I'm figuring 1w will hold up better over time anyway. Here in Scandinavia it seems hard to find anything between 1/4w and 1w.
    For the schematics 1w 1k and 10k resistors I'll go with 2w (maybe 3w for the 470ohm bias resistor or is that overkill?)
    Thanks for making these videos, I'm learning a hell of a lot from you!
    /Niels

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 років тому

      You're welcome, Niels. Yes, you can use higher wattage resistors in your build. I always use a minimum of 1W in my scratch builds for a couple of reasons: 1.) They look old fashioned, bigger and better :) 2.) They will last longer. 3.) The extra cost is negligible. I also agree that a 2W or 3W resistor is better in the bias position.

    • @bluegreenface1193
      @bluegreenface1193 7 років тому

      Thanks for the fast reply Uncle Doug :)
      I'm guessing they went with 1/2w for two reasons;
      1. they were cheaper than 1w
      2. those Allen Bradley carbon comps 1/2w are half the size of the 1w, so smaller the better especially in those early small chassis like 5F1.

    Hey Doug... great video.
    Would this make a good first amp? I have decades of experience building electronics, but all small, low powered stuff, and lately a lot of digital circuits & SMD. I have built a couple of valve things using low voltage valves, but no HT stuff.
    The schematic looks pretty simple but I get that the devil is in the details.

    I really like the looks of that grille cutout. Is the black frame in front of the grillcloth cut from just a piece of wood? I'd be afraid to break one of the little spindly parts even if just while I were doing the upholstering. I'm curious what you may have done to avoid breaking it. Plywood construction? Fiberglass reinforcements? Maybe I'm overthinking it a bit.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  8 років тому

      +Joel Thomas Thanks, Joel. It is simply a decorative grill that I cut out of 1/2" thick plywood, then routered to round the edges. It is quite strong....breaking it was not a concern.

    • @JoelzombieThomas
      @JoelzombieThomas 8 років тому

      I thought it might be plywood since it has layers with grain in both directions- probably making it the best choice of wood. With solid wood, only one direction of grain unless it is super hard, the grain can tend to be a weak point.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  8 років тому

    Hi Doug; in the trem valve, how come the second half grid can see the high voltage output of the first half? Thought this was a no no. Regards, Martin

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 років тому

      You've made an interesting observation, Martin. The rule you cite pertains to amplification tubes, but the second half of the 12AX7 in the tremolo circuit is a cathode follower and obeys a different set of rules. If you notice, besides the direct connection of its grid to the preceding tube's plate, the output of the tube is from its cathode, not its plate. Here is a full explanation that may (or may not) make sense: www.valvewizard.co.uk/dccf.html

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  Рік тому

      Yes, but you'll have to add an oscillator tube. Can your power transformer handle it ?? No, because I don't advocate adding tremolo or reverb to existing circuits. It would be better to simply build a Vibro-Champ.

    Hi Doug, Im about to build a AB764 vibe champ. An issue I phase is the I don't get the 25k-RA pot for the vibrato. What is available is a 50k-RA. Do you think this would be an issue or is it only that I'll get an higher intensity?

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 років тому +1

      Murrat Osmani Greetings, Murrat. If you can't get the 25K-RA pot, then the 50K-RA pot would probably work just fine. The Intensity may be a little greater, but more likely, it will plateau around 25K with little or no increase past that point. Either way, you'll have a good, working tremolo.

      +Chaka Wolf You really can't get reliable B+ readings without all the tubes in place. Unless current is flowing, the socket (or cap) voltages are generally high. Use a Current Limiter at first, just to protect the circuit.
