  • The great debate, can I call myself a clubman rally driver anymore or not, now I’m competing in a Fiesta R5?

    very inspirational . started watching these for the dog...have a troublesome one of my own, but have since found them incredibly compelling. What a great mix of car porn, tech, daily life , doggo and honest and reflective advise for someone who has a hobby looking to pursue it to perhaps a level that many dont achieve. glad you are going ball deep.....life be short.

      Hi Keith. Evo is a great choice, but I hear you on scarcity of some parts. The mechanicals aren’t very hard to get mainly. Body panels are harder. It’s quite popular to put the running gear in a proto shell now, which gets rid of the problems with rust and panel availability.

      Cheers Richard. I’m returning to National Rally champs after 30+ years away from it. Certainly will have to preserve the car and not risk damage as parts very hard to obtain Looking forward to your next instalment

    Another really interesting video Richard. Pretty inspiring, and seemingly brutally honest. Obviously rallying is a real passion for you. Respect to you for your commitment and results. All the best from North Yorkshire.

      Thanks Micheal. I know I’m privileged to be in an R5, but on a perhaps different scale, I want people to be able to relate to the challenges I experience, which many other people also have, in financing rallying.

      @Richard_Weaver I only came across your channel a few weeks ago and I've been catching up on past videos. It's quite refreshing to see the attitude you have towards rallying and showing both the highs and lows. You're dead right (pardon the pun) about trying to do what you want in life while you can, it passes by at such a quick rate....especially as the years go on. I did a good bit back in the late 90's and early 2000's, all in the ubiquitous MK2....firstly with a toyota 4AGE, and the progressing to a vauxhall XE. A big accident, family commitments & a new house build put an end the rally career. Fast forward 20 odd years and I'm in the process of building a historic MK2 to make some more memories while in can.

    Really like your content! Nice to hear thoughts behind the scenes (when wind is not blowing :)). Tried rallying almost 20 years ago when I bought Swift GTi N1 spec, did 3 rallies, went broke and sold the car.

      I know what you’re saying Ozzie. I rallied my Mk1 for about 8 years and had a ball. I then got the evo and was instantly so much more competitive. The R5 is the progression. Ultimately, I suspect I’ll go back to an escort. But I reckon it will be a firecracker modern mk2 if I’m honest.

      Both are awesome. The R5 can be driven to some extent like and escort. Very adjustable chassis; does what you ask of it perfectly. I did a vid about driving them. Perhaps check it out. Thanks for your comment 😄👍🏻

    Interesting point of view.
    Firstly, rally drivers are by nature risk takers so gambling on progressing by hocking yourself to the nines comes as no surprise.
    Secondly, and probably contradictory, should you be running an R5 if your first thought when you have an off is the cost. Maybe the first point answers this second!
    Thirdly and more importantly, are you a clubman? That entirely depends on the events you are doing. If you are continually turning up to small single venue events, where the entry field is circa 60 cars and maybe fielding a junior series as well, then no you are not a clubman, you are one of the ones the rest of the field are complaining about.
    They are there in the ex road car they have built in the garage at home buying the parts on Klarna or from each months salary and are out there doing their best (Like you were in the escort) And along come half a dozen of Mr Wilsons cast offs and trash the field and take all the pots home. If you can run an R5 you should be either mixing your events or moving along and doing the nationals with the big boys. Then you'd be a clubman until you start regularly appearing in the top ten.
    But the R5 debate will rumble for a long time, rallying is very political and cliquey, a cheque book won't buy you a win and no one wants to finish in 38th place in an R5 ! So, are you a clubman? Probably defined by event entry.

    • @Richard_Weaver
      @Richard_Weaver  10 місяців тому +2

      Extremely interesting point Nick. I’ll always compete on a few SV events, as I’ve always done because I like them. So the likes of the Southdowns, Brands, Abingdon. But I’d like to do Jim Clark next year and perhaps the Three Shires. So a mix of events, purely for the fun of it.
