My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!

not sure if this is something you have thought of but what if you choose 5 favorite flannels, bamboo, party, tee shirts, 2 pairs of shorts, and 5 pairs of pants, and make it a rule if you buy a flannel then you have to let a flannel go or if you buy a party shirt you have to let one go same for everything that way you can keep it down to a minimum

Buying something you want/like, and it's new, whether need it at the time or not...I get it, it gives you a good feeling. My addiction now is 1/64 scale diecast cars and trucks.

Same here--books. Gotta weed some out soon, but I read them over and over until they fall apart. Bookshelves are about to collapse. No room in the house for more shelves.
Just a tip…Take it from one who use to pack for air travel a lot, If you roll your towels and clothes instead of folding them, they will take up lees room in your cabinets 😊….I think we all horde a little bit 😏… After years of fighting the same battle, I have a rule, if I bring something in, I have to find other things to go out…..I can’t say I live up to it all of the time but all one can do is try most of the time 🤷🏼♀️😊
I watched a UA-cam video that had a guy roll all his clothes for a suitcase and compare it to his regular flat folding in the same suitcase to see which method took up less space. The rolling was no advantage

For the shirts you want to give away, I have an alternative suggestion you might consider. Take pieces of fabric from them and make a patchwork comforter/cushions etc.
Last year's giveaway was super-duper fun and I will try again. I lost to Francisco!! Not this year, naynay!

I live in a 22' RV, and upgrade from a DIY Ram Van. I appreciate having a tiny closet for sundresses and jackets/shirts. Underwear an socks go in small drawer below closet. All the rest is folded Kon Mari style and placed in categorized zippered travel packs: jeans/bottoms, cold weather, short sleeves, long sleeves, etc. Those are placed in overhead cabinets. Off season clothing/bedding is stuffed into zippered pillow covers.
Matthew I have an addiction that if t shirts come in numerous colours I have to have them. This year I've been really good. Not got many donated lots to friends family charity shops. Well done you
P.S., ...There are 2 lightweight wash clothes & 2 lightweight towels in that package.☺️

Me, myself, as someone who lives in a house, I have clothes all over hidden away that I have only worn a couple of times. Some that don’t even fit but seem to have sentimental value. I, like you, should really, really get rid of 60% to 70% of what I don’t wear. Shame on me!

Matthew Please be careful with the amount of tylenol/acetaminophen you are taking.I was taking it for back pain and arthritis and not being careful of dosage and damaged my liver.I don't drink alcohol and never did much.I now have to avoid all Tylenol and have my liver enzymes checked every 3 months.
Bring your t-shirts and older Dixon shirts to a quilter. They can makes you a quilt with them. So you can enjoy it still, it in another way😉😀
Hi Matthew, Congrats on hitting 29K subs! I'm kind of going thru my apartment and deciding what to get rid of. ! My daughter and I have 2 storage units with seasonal stuff(Christmas)...I think it's time to have my daughter rid herself of some clothing. :) I saw Amber's picture on Benny's breakfast Bar website, celebrating her B-day! Have a wonderful week ahead.
Large Beach Towels - put them on top of the bed! So, when The Beautiful Penny throws up on the bed, clean up is very easy! I also put the largest size bed protection pads on the bed. They are 100% water proof! These can be thrown away easily - no extra trips to the laundry mat!

Hello Matthew....29,000 subs, an accomplishment indeed! It has been a while Hun, since I've made a comment. Not for lack of following. For having way too much in my bloody dump truck, every single day. I have to sleep sometime, that is 'When I get to sleep before 5 a.m.'😵💫. At my age, having too much stuff and losing it all on at least 3 different occasions in my life...has caused me to hang on with a death grip to the things I have now. I too am in the process of getting rid of 98% of everything I own. 30 ft camper with zero closets. Storage I have of course, but easily accessible, not so much. I applaud your diligence. By the time you reach my age 66(on your consult day, in Edmonton) I pray you will have nailed it. Pets to Precious Penny 🐈🐾❤️ Don't be too hard on yourself...life has a way of doing that for you. Awareness and challenging ourselves is absolutely part of growing and not becoming stagnant.
Attracted to minimalism and efficiency, the battle against matrrialism, I paired down repeatedly. BUT I finally realized that Celebration is a great part of who I am. That my collections of sparkly hats and colorful clothing and books are tools to help me celebrate. Yes,I weed through them guided by practicality and priority. But I no longer amputate my soul to forge my character. I just keep on being "quite a character".🙃

If you have not seen them in 6 months, then give it away. Are you going to look at it again even if it is in the storage unit? I get it, really.
Sorry- six months is ridiculously short in my opinion.
I have recirculated many things after even several *years* and when I get them out they are as good as buying completely new! Since my clothing is :\"classic" and not overly trendy, it works just fine and I save a *ton* of money!

I think you made a great decision (about the shirts and about having a storage unit.) You can keep downsizing both each season, if that is what you want to do. 😁 Totally get a shelving unit for your storage unit and just operate seasonally. Maybe even get a smaller storage unit. Your tiny home is VERY tiny and you are making it work! ❤️❤️

29K.....Awesome! Matthew what made me cut back on the Dixxons' was not even opening the packages and stacking them in the hall closet and trying to add another. The stack is still very high and unopened.....well the thing I see is the "Shasta" and I have to order it cuz I live in Shasta County...Boat in Shasta Lake and Look at Mt. Shasta every day!
You might consider selling your Dixxons in a consignment shop.

You are not the only person with what I label hoarding issues. Facebook Marketplace has been my friend this summer, I've offloaded stuff I haven't used in half a dozen years. I have enough clothes to last this lifetime and several more. Of well, buy more storage bins.

I tend to agree more with the person who called it a collector mentality.
Plus, most of hat he has is being used, just not s regularly if there were fewer of them.

I've downsized from my small condo and building out my van to live in and travel. Whatever I wasn't able to sell I donated or gave away. For now I'm storing some things at my brother's house. I can't bring myself to sell my saddle and bridles even though I don't have a horse right now. Now to work on downsizing my collection of clothes. It's about 1/4 of what I started with but still too much.

Have you considered donating to the homeless directly? I mean the people who actually live on the streets.
I have several blankets I am trying to give to them. Not sure where to go in Indianapolis. When I donate to goodwill, I noticed they overcharge when they resale to people.
A Japanese lady who has a clearing out vlog says that she keeps only 100 pieces of clothes.
She does not count underware, this is just 100 main outer items.
So when she wants to buy a new pair of pants, for example, she _HAS_ to toss 1 big item…
She says that this keeps the clothes in check.

I don't see the problem with having extra stuff if you buy it once and keep it you never have to waste money and buy it again
What you can start doing is, one thing new in and one thing old totally (not storage unit) gone. One step farther till your storage unit is gone, one new in and one in van and 2 in the storage unit totally gone. That way your brain has to know what you are replacing the new with. It will slow you down on buying if you like what you got. Just a thought.

There's nothing wrong with collecting. What if you took photos of your shirts and kept the photos, which of course we NEVER print anymore...Perhaps you could make the decision to buy new only when you're ready to purge? I try to do that in my sticks and bricks. I have a certain number of hangers. Will not buy more. Always looking to downsize and reduce my clothing. Once I retire I will get rid of A LOT because I won't be needing them. Anyway, as always your video was entertaining and informative. Keeping it real Matthew, that's why we love you.
I have a seasonal clothing issue includes jackets and sweaters, and twice a year I shift what works for the season. I wouldn't beat yourself up for having storage. I can't see myself not having storage as I garden and do that for others...plus I love my tools but don't need them all the time, just the ones for the one day vanlife. 4 months of work after 11 months of school - still on track but damn, it takes sooo long to make stuff work out ..
I think you've encouraged some of us to purge. just because I have the space, my spare room doesn't need to be full! that's my project for the weekend!
Oh yah you might also want to put things in all baskets it helps but still u r doing what we all do thanks for giving us an opportunity to vent share calm complain you r awesome.
Look into Tylenol Arthritis. I, too have a lower back problem, with "Arthur" from the Ritus family setting in🙄and I take that...albeit sparingly, so don't build up a tolerance to it.

Fine line between collecting and hoarding--there it is--that word--how did I recognize the difference? when I had to justify, rationalize, deny and drag others into the mix--so for me I had to get real about what hole I was trying fill with my items--it's a process but it starts with QUITTING --you'll figure it out or need a trailer to haul your gear around with you

We do live in season though, and there's some stuff. You've got to have to work on things and change clothes out. And it's not shame it's just life. You're handling it good cut yourself some slack. You can't have it all in the Van. But there is stuff that you need that you don't want to have to buy every time you use so I think you're doing well.

I know what it feels like to have a collector mentality. I collect vintage pocket knives.
You're absolutely right about obsessions. I have more drawing pencils, color pencils, oil paint pencils, water color pencils and plenty of sketch pads, oil paint frames, and any sized easel you could think of along with my quilting stuff that literally fills 2 small closets. But in my defense I use are to express my feelings rather than explode at another human. Admittedly 15 sets of brushes is a bit obsessive but they all get used whenever I'm having a madness moment of splashing paint in my office/studio. I have stacks and stacks of finished paintings that only my family will ever see. But they're done as my fun, stress relief, therapeutic time. What can I say. I'm obsessed with creativity. Shirts are no different, expressing your personality through happy fun shirts is creativity. Keep what makes you happy Matthew. I would make room in a van for being a le to create my art, probably more than I do now with spectacular scenery to paint.
Why do I anticipate you looking up the Dixon catalogue within the few next days? You already have? Be happy.

I have just given away three bin bags of clothes! The secret was not looking in them just letting them all go! I feel so much better. Most of my paperbacks have gone as well the house is feeling lighter!
