The United States vs. the WW2 Volcano

    For a brief period in March of 1944, the greatest force facing off against the Americans in Italy during WWII was not that of the Axis Powers, but rather, that of Mother Nature herself. As the Mount Vesuvius roared to life in the middle of the Allied push through Southern Europe, a New York Times writer described the volcano as sounding “exactly like artillery fire.” And against nearby two American airfields, it would prove even more devastating than the Luftwaffe...

      One of my shipmates, when taking a tour to Mount Aetna when we pulled in to Augusta Bay in '06, decided to light a cigarette on a lava rock. He said he wound up coughing his lungs up because of the sulfur content.

      They couldn't have been made out of aluminium, which is what I'd expect them to be made from.
      Aluminium melts at 660.3°C / 1220.54°f
      Lava is typically between 700 - 1200°C / 1292 - 2192°f
      Of course they could have been made from stainless steel - can't find a source to say either way.

      Ian Macfarlane what about enameled steel if it was used in the military that is.

    • @ianmacfarlane1241
      @ianmacfarlane1241 4 роки тому +2

      @@SquishyZoran Interesting call, but I doubt that the enamelling could take that kind of temperature.
      I'm pretty sure that enamelled ironware, (le Cruset for instance) could take temperatures beyond 300°C / 572°f, but I don't know about whether it could take the temperatures found in lava flows.
      The other problem, (as far as I could tell, although I'm not an expert) would be weight - enamelled cast iron is incredibly heavy, making it unsuitable for military uses, (in the field) while enamelled steel tends to be a lot lighter, but very thin, so I'd imagine that buckling/distortion would occur at those temperatures.
      I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I simply can't see urns being placed into lava to make coffee - sounds like a military tall tale.
      I'd imagine that there's a grain of truth somewhere - perhaps the urns were placed near the lava, on rock, dirt, or even cooled lava itself, but I can't see it happening as described.
      How would they even handle the urns? They'd be taking unnecessary risks - exactly what commanding officers don't want.

    If this happened in a book that "oh it just so happens that the point where there was fighting on the Italian peninsular for the first time in over a century, this volcano happens to erupt just as the fighting is near" the author would be called a hack for coming up with such a contrived coincidence. But reality has the advantage over fiction as fiction has to be plausible.

      If the leadership had allowed earlier evacuation that would have made sense. The issues though is the weather a eruption produces grounds planes even today.
      Essentially if this happened today the planes would be left behind as well because of how dangerous flying in the plume of ash from a vulcano is. Even flying close to the collum is full of issues turbulence and lighting strikes. Getting the men out best they could likely have done when they decided to leave.

      The U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay was nearby, too, and was a massive base and major repair facility. It probably hadn't been a known volcano for more than 20 years, and its most recent eruption was 400+ years prior. I know a little bit about it... I was there for the eruption. I was erupted upon. I helped evacuate Clark. I saw T-shirts that said, "I survived the volcano-earthquake-typhoon of 1991" or something like that, being sold in Olongopo City." Utter devastation.

    When the volcano causes more damage to your airforce then hostile fire... :D also if you think the concept of flying an aircraft that was refurbished after crashing or even getting shot down is facanateing I'd love to see the stories swapped by pilots and crew "yea we got our aircraft new, had to replace an engine from another airframe that was too damaged to restore and had a rebuild after we landed gear up, what's the story behind yours?" "Nothing special, had a few wing panels replaced due to flack, also full rebuild after pyroclastic flow melted some of the airframe" would also be a great museum attraction if they still had one of the ones that survived and rebuilt as an exhibit

    • @SilvaDreams
      @SilvaDreams 4 роки тому +1

      @Ryy Dog To be fair you can't really fly a plane in volcanic ash, it is really fine and gets sucked into the engines and either a) chews everything up B) turns to glass and causes things to lock up. Go look at the mess that an volcano eruption causes to airways, it can effect thousands of miles of air space.

      Sounds like an awesome way to reassure idiots.... if that volcano wants to, naples will be a crater. And you should look up its connected naighbour which makes versuvious look tiny. I strongly suspect versuvious is just a tiny safety vent for campi flegrei and messing with one could upset the other. And campi flegei is getting very hot at the surface recently showing signs it could go vei 8, a full super eruption.

    You would think maybe the idea of putting an airfield at Pompei might have elicited a moment or two’s thought. Especially once things started rumbling. What was the reasoning? “Nah! No way could this place be wiped out twice by a volcano In a couple of hundred years!”

    My gradfather was there on Vesuvius the day before it erupted when he was presumably off duty. He remembered his Italian escorts immediately running off without saying anything while they were up there, which struck him as ominous. Needless to say, the next day it went off.

    As for the video itself.
    World war two breaks out and Vesuvius wakes up, "OH! Hey gang, what's you doing, having a war, yeah that sounds fun."
    Then
    "They decided to stay in place to fight the Germans."
