    Great video. Normally a 24 minute video would not hold my attention, but not so with yours. I enjoy the history lesson every bit as much if not more than the sword. I encourage everyone to support you on patreon and teespring to keep the great videos coming.

    Another sword review! I'm enjoying the information and presentation. Since the panicdemic started and guns have become harder to get I've started carrying swords in my gun shop. These reviews are, therefore, timely and helpful. Thanks

    Like you were saying... things improved. Old style chainmail gave way to riveted chainmail which helped defeat more pointed weapons. But... as we know, black powder was developed and then armor started going by the wayside.

    Good video Mike, probably the most prevalent protection for the rank and file was gambeson, worn in layers or under armor, a latter day flack jacket.

    Re: 18:43 ...I think for a lot of people the interest in the later periods has to do with the emergence of documentation regarding sword techniques. Probably the same reason longswords are so popular; they have a lot of source material about them that survived and was translated. Of course they are also big and fast and flashy (I happen to be biased, like longsword, myself, but wish I knew more about sword and buckler, that was where it was at!)

    • @duelist1954
      @duelist1954  4 роки тому

      I wonder how common duels were in the 1000 AD to 1300 AD period? I'd guess most fighting was in full kit on horseback, which is a lot different than fencing....a lot harder for most people today to replicate too. I would guess young knights trained for that, rather than sword and buckler fights. Even trial by combat for the nobility usually started on horseback in that era. Not something the average guy today can afford to buy into...though I know a few who do....but their incomes are far from average.

    That climate change he talked about was apparently caused by a volcano island in Indonesia blowing itself apart. It caused a 2 year winter. The island is now known to historians as Ancient Krakatoa. One of the remaining pieces became the volcano island of Krakatoa which also blew itself apart in 1888. One of Krakatoa's pieces is currently the volcano island Little Krakatoa.
    It's only a matter of time.
