Average person can get in decent shape for this hike in 3 to 6 months. Some don't do any training, but I don't suggest that approach. The better shape you are in, the easier the first week is.
I highly recommend doing this trail. I've done it 3 times so far and headed out in August to once again enjoy the sierras. It's so hard to describe or capture the spectacular views. Once you experience them in person, you will understand why I keep going back.
