Salama Odyssey is not just about the journey or the destination-it’s about the people who travel with you and those who made it possible for you to reach where you are today. With Salama’s undeniably vibrant and creative company, filled with funny anecdotes and bursts of inspiration, we’ve envisioned a way to share our adventures through the traditional and modern rhythms of Indian Ocean Creole culture during Fringe Festival 2023.
This 2023 Salama show is a celebration of connection-our diverse perspectives, our shared curiosity about the creative process, and the beauty of collaboration within a multicultural group. Salama Odyssey in about our origins, culture, and friendships, ultimately exploring who we are, using the evocative power of Maloya music and dance.
Maloya, a traditional percussion-driven music from Réunion Island, is deeply rooted in the island’s complex and painful history of slavery. Today, it resonates as a symbol of ancestry, Creole identity, and joyful freedom.
We are honoured to pioneer the sharing of this powerful and magical art form at the Subiaco Arts Centre on the 3rd and 4th of February 2023.
