  • A full unabridged audiobook of the classic short story, "The Boy at Mugby", by Charles Dickens - complete with sounds and visuals.
"The Boy at Mugby" describes (in thinly disguised form) the town of Rugby in Warwickshire and the town's railway station. This was inspired by an incident in April 1866, when Charles Dickens was travelling from London to Liverpool. Dickens's train made an unscheduled stop at Rugby due to one of the carriages catching fire. While waiting for his journey to resume, he went into the refreshment room for a cup of coffee, and the proprietress, clearly not recognising the celebrity author, treated him rudely. Inspired by this, in chapter three of 'Mugby Junction' he made a scathing attack on railway refreshment rooms and their staff.
"Mugby Junction" is a set of short stories written in 1866 by Charles Dickens and collaborators Charles Collins, Amelia B. Edwards, Andrew Halliday, and Hesba Stretton. It was first published in a Christmas edition of the magazine All the Year Round.
    Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.

      I know this is weird......
I often think how strange it would be if all the greats came back for just an hour or so, not only to see and hear how very much alive their works are, but to get their take on it all. Imagine watching the tv dramatisations with them!

Well, well, it just goes to show that uneatable British railway food and questionable customer service have a much longer tradition behind them than I realised!

😂 I should be fairly well practiced as I’m a Brit and have lived in London my entire life! Dickens also writes dialectically too, removing aitches on certain words and inserting them in others that don’t need them! Thanks for listening 📚

Great job of reading in the voice of a young, cocky busboy at a Charles Dicken’s Moody Mugs-they-be Station! 🎉❤🎉
It’s got that teenage-early adulthood, irreverent, side-cracking, smirky, & an artistically dramatic mimic of his customers who come in thinking “high & mighty” of themselves along their way- true fun! 🪭📚📖🪄🎁✍🏼

Haha thanks Evelan. A really unusual story, clearly borne out of so much derision and contempt from Dickens himself

@@classicaudiobookswithelliot Sarcasm from one of Victorian’s finest, emotional provocateurs! A bit of a change, as usually I am upset at the injustice, misery, & misers within his stories. This one is vaudeville on a Friday night, instead of those “Sunday evening morality novellas” he orchestrated with ink over the industrialized musical mayhem of his day.
It reminds me a bit like the rhythm & jest of
Dickens was often very empathetic…even here, for haven’t we all had a run-in, or two, with the “non-service service” person.
      Note:
While I imagine Dickens an A-Level or College 101 in the UK, my exposure beyond the Christmas Carol has truly been through YT; so, I appreciate the comment section for a bit of seminar like reflection and I do enjoy the idea that my insights might bring a bit of “understanding laughter”. Thank you for contributing to my exposure to literature.

You’re so welcome, Evelan. It’s great to have you. To be totally honest with you, this was a story I was completely unfamiliar with. These collections which would have appeared in magazines and periodicals seem to have faded into relative obscurity but are well worth the resurrection in my opinion!
