    I feel like people don’t know what is about to happen. The rate of change and development has gone madly exponential. No one knows what a machine with all the world’s knowledge and ideas in its mind might come up with for solutions to almost every problem we have.

      Very true and I often feel conflicted about even talking to people about it who are just living there lives. One, I don't think they would understand the situation humanity is currently in and two, they should just enjoy their lives as it is right now but there are only a few remaining years left of life as we have known it to be.

      My prediction is that when age reversal appears as a technology, there'll still be 8 billion humes on the planet, and there'll still be a massive space between the have nots (most of us) and the elites with the have. The haves will get access to the age reversal tech because they will consider themselves worthy and important. The rest of us won't have the cash and won't fit the class requirements to be allowed access to the tech. LIke Elysium (the movie) or Altered Carbon (TV) there'll end up humes who are hundreds of years old and obscenely wealthy, and the rest of us will be the 80 ish. Most of us won't reach three figures, even if we are young now. That's what I think will happen. The first few who get the age reversal tech will keep it a secret. After a while it will be common knowledge but still not available to the masses.

    I get what you're saying and mostly agree with the sentiment but find it hard to enjoy anything when it's just a bunch of corporations forging the path, all of which are headed by people I think are threats to humanity. I don't think they'll cause extinction but I do think they're going to make this a lot worse than it needs to be, and quite possibly lock in a suboptimal path for all of us for quite a while, at the bare minimum.
    I've been thinking about all these group computing projects that people have done to find Minecraft seeds and similar, donating spare compute across average person's rigs, why don't we work together to build our own opensource model from a system like that?

      Yeah, I agree. I wish I could be more optimistic about this. I mean at the end of the day corporations are just people but unfortunately, history has shown that people can be pretty messed up when in positions of power. I also worry about giving big red buttons to everyone (i.e. open-source AI) considering the messed-up things we've seen people do with guns. I can't help but think about all the terrible things an angsty teenager might get up to if they have the leading AI tech at their fingertips. A small example of this is Civitai, a place for people to upload AI images. If you do nothing more than sort the images by recency and turn off the 18+ filter, you will see what people really want which is rather eye opening considering most of it is taboo. Ultimately, there are down sides to every approach, and we simply will have to overcome them collectively.

    • @phen-themoogle7651
      @phen-themoogle7651 4 місяці тому +3

      I think right before a major turning-point or future is always the most interesting time in human history. There's probably going to be a lot more times like this in the future (since unpredictability of the future is interesting) that have more technologies to look forward to and things we cannot imagine beyond ASI. I just want to get to a point that is more futuristic already, like travel 5-50 years into the future and see what happens haha (maybe not too far since my human brain might not be able to process it or AI eats us as delicacies)
      The most fascinating thing will be if AI can manipulate time in our world or at least show us movies from what happens in the future and can simulate those worlds for us that we can go inside as video games. Of course future beings might go to the past in such scenarios, playing with dinosaurs could be fun too🦖

    I think a lot of the fear is strictly practical for a lot of people. I’m a poor person and I know a lot of poor people, and I think increasingly the appeal of knowing things is unappealing to people. If knowledge about the world makes you sad or frustrated and you’re less and less likely to be helped out of your current difficult circumstances, why do it? And then for people who have dedicated themselves to art, language, literature, etc etc - they see the immediate threat to their ability to scratch together a living on one hand and worsening indifference from their economic overlords on the other. I value and respect the point of this video, but I think fear and a good collective scream are appropriate reactions as well.

    I have few questions.
    1. When will GPT-5 come ?
    2. What is the parameter count of human brain.
    3. What is the parameter count of GPT-4 or Claude Opus ?
    4. How much time it takes for parameter count of most advance model to become 10 times ?
    (I have herd it takes 1 year for that, but not sure )

    • @phen-themoogle7651
      @phen-themoogle7651 4 місяці тому +1

      1. Unknown 2. Some estimates suggest that the human brain has the equivalent of around 100 trillion (10^14) to 1 quadrillion (10^15) synapses, which could loosely be considered analogous to the parameters in an artificial neural network. 3. Unknown, but thought to be between hundred billions to 1-2 trillion. (I asked gpt-4o and it says "I am based on the GPT-4 architecture, which has about 1.7 trillion parameters. This large number of parameters allows me to generate more accurate and nuanced responses compared to previous models.") 4. While there is no fixed rule, some observations suggest that the parameter count of state-of-the-art models has been increasing by roughly an order of magnitude (10 times) every 1-2 years. However, this growth rate may not be sustainable indefinitely due to computational and data limitations.
      I like researching that too, it will be interesting when the biggest model (if it has 1 trillion parameters) has 100x more parameters than now (maybe in 3-4 years?!) ...to see what it's like and if it becomes its own species at that point. Also even if it reaches the same amount as our synapses, it would need to be extremely optimized at those specs, like how some smaller parameter models outperform or compete with bigger parameters models. Like Llama3 70Billion was pretty competitive with GPT4 which might be dumbed-down/optimized to 500 billion to 1 trillion for public interaction (I don't think they use the full 1.7 trillion, because the old GPT-4 turbo says " I have 175 billion parameters" ..hmm but then it's interesting like is GPT-4o 10x bigger than GPT-4? lol , if this is a pattern GPT5 might be 17 trillion+ parameters ...I bet GPT6 will be 170 trillion+ parameters and be sentient.

    It is always healthy to maintain an attitude of gratitude but the chances of you and I having been born in such an age of prosperity, economically and health-wise, is a function of the chances of you and I having been born to the parents that we were, and the same counts for them. This goes back all the way to the very first organism. Thus the probability is 100%, esp. coming from a Bayesian point-of-view. This is the observation selection effect. But once more it is good to acknowledge how well we have it compared to our ancestors, and it is our duty on this earth and in our ephemeral existence to make it better for our successors.

It’s easy to accept the alarmist point of view, but think about it critically: things are always improving. Would you rather be alive 100 years ago, or today? Today! Fifty years ago or today? Today, of course. Look around you, there are almost daily reports of medical and technology miracles (for lack of a better word). Cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

    I don't always agree with David's perspective but I find it valuable. Nevertheless, the hyperbole is getting a little out of hand here. I'm old, so I've had the benefit of living through several "omg everything is going to change!!!1" moments and while it does, it doesn't. People are still people. Acting like one technology or invention is going to suddenly transform the natural behavior of humanity is ridiculous; we act exactly the same as we did a hundred years ago, a thousand years ago, ten thousand years ago (as best we know)... the monkey doesn't change. We simply use the new tools to accomplish the same goals we always have - status, sex, power (violent or otherwise). We have to make wise decisions based on this, because otherwise we get to learn the lessons all over again... though that, too, is in the nature of the monkey.

Unless we advance fundamental basic science, our technological progress will start to take a hit. Perpetual state of stress due to not knowing what tomorrow will bring is very much the opposite of what this shill (and many others) suggests.

    yea i feel like this all the time but for some reason, I keep thinking of what Dan Barker said. When he used to believe in Christianity he would say to himself; 'wow how lucky am I, to be born in the right country, to the right family, in the right part of history, to be perfectly positioned to take advantage of the imminent rapture.' (paraphrase). As time went on he realised it was all just wishful thinking and every person before him had felt this same feeling of imminent success which led to him losing faith. Any thoughts?

    • @carlosamado7606
      @carlosamado7606 4 місяці тому

      I think there is a difference between thinking something like that on blind fate and an empirical exponential curve of technology. How many people predicted the "end of days" or another religous/metaphysical event but it never comes to pass? Now compare that to how advanced (as far as we know) technologically we have been. Especially AI has done things in last few years many thought was impossible for the next decades so there is a real pattern of accelerated growth.

    • @roryfarrell3587
      @roryfarrell3587 4 місяці тому +1

      @@carlosamado7606 that's a good point but I think that some of the promises of ai do require a pinch of faith to believe. you don't really know what is and isn't possible in the future. A big draw for me with ai is the idea that ageing could be 'cured' in my lifetime. this doesn't appear to be against physical law but neither is 'killing all bacteria' for example, but in reality it is quite impossible. The same could go for some of these other hopes for AI like post-scarcity. Generally there are hard limits to things and this exponential improvement may also have hard limits and I think it requires a little bit of faith (not as much as Christianity) to assume it doesn't.
      what led me down this path is Ray Kurzweil saying he predicts longevity treatments in the next 10 years. Well I doubt he's got longer than that left without this sort of assistance. What a stroke of luck for him, not only is he living in the right part of history but it's perfectly timed down to the year to save his life. If that's not faith then I don't know what is, and couldn't help but doubt my own chances at ever-lasting life (and I'm 30 btw).

    The weapon we have is that our brain is essentially a compression tool, ultimately its going to try to compress the next new thing and in the process of trying to do that, masters it. Its trying to resolve the next novel data point at out systemic interface and in real time, and recursively builds up a world model in the process, no other tool is capable of that, neural networks are just approximations of the damn thing that we can abstract and scale out.
    AI only gets to extend us and nothing more.
