  • In April I had the privilege of filming "The Desert Dog Police Dog Trials" in Scottsdale, Arizona. I would like to thank Tim Norton of the Phoenix PD and Kevin Sheldahl (retired N.M. Sheriff's K9 handler) for helping me get these videos. The competitions reflected real life scenarios. Police K9 handlers were working with Swat Team Members. Some of the scenarios involve "Flash Bangs" and blank rifle ammunition during apprehensions.
There were 64 police service dog teams from all over the South Western United States and Mexico who competed in this event. The Police K9 Officers in this region certify their dogs through the "National Police Dog Association" and the "Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association." These are both excellent K9 organizations whose goal is to make sure their training standards and certification reflect the street work a K9 team will face on the job.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case with many other police K9 organizations who certify police service dog teams. In my opinion, these other organizations do a disservice to the dog handlers who put their lives on the line every day. These other organizations put handlers lives at risk because of their unrealistic weak certification programs. Handlers from all over the country should show this video to their supervisors and recommend they consider the National Police Dog Association as their certifying organization.

Very nice work. Love the handlers that help dog down from catwalk instead of forcing dog to jump down and injure front legs. Says a lot about a handler.

As a retired cop, I worked a lot with K9s, I can't say enough good things about having them to work with. Great job to all involved in this video, I really enjoy watching these teams work so well together. Stay safe

I noticed that the first two guys has to do what appears to be a choke out.. but the guy around 17:00 can just command his dog to out.. I guess my question is.. is it handler preference?

No....its generally the dog (sometimes better breading and or training too)...some dogs have a stronger prey drive than others...some "hardened" or more experienced dogs once they get the taste of blood sorta speak it can become more difficult to out the dog as they either get in the zone or are enjoying chewing too much.

Matt Vandewiel ohh OK. That makes sense.

Also...part of the prey dive is once they bite..that prey is theirs. Just like you see a lion not wanting to let go of a kill around other lion...they are trained dogs, but still animals with basic animal instincts.

Police dogs know how to BITE but; handlers have dogs that refuse to RELEASE their grip. A dog should RELEASE when told to do without having to be strung up (choked-out) etc. Even the most frantic biter can learn to OUT / RELEASE on command without weakening its performance.
