Very nice! Got into a staring contest with your turtle twin coming out of your chest though. Is that rather a quote from Total Recall or Hypnotoad?

When I was at Berklee in 1976....;)
Awesome video Denis! Only problem I have is picking stuff up from the records. Would you consider slowing the song down, using Transcribe! for example, cheating?
Also you basically suggest using tunes as a vehicle right? Instead of practicing all you arps, chord inversions. Learn songs and then apply these techniques? For example: I want to learn the Cmaj arpeggio all over the neck. Instead of shedding the pattern with a metronome etc, learn to play All of Me...
Re: you creating skeleton versions of charts, please check out @Jazz Guitar Scrapbook on UA-cam. IIRC he is planning to do the same.
    Also what about www.ralphpatt.com/Song.html ?

45:40 cheating! You have to find the second set of chords in the bridge of "Girl From Ipanema". Great vid though. Thanks!

Hi Denis...I'm 79, I've taught myself chord melodies of jazz standards, accompany my partner who plays flute, but never spent time getting pick techniques down. The speed and smoothness of your licks is mystifying. I've taken lessons from some really professional players but none of them had any real advice on how to approach speed and precision and choosing licks. I will keep listening to your videos

20:21 on your point on songs played by more old school players, I’d really recommend listening to Teddy Wilson, I’ve learnt a lot of standards using his changes for tunes. He plays everything really correct, but also has some nice movements which you can use once you’re a bit more confident with the song.

Wow! What a pleasure finding another great teacher.
Its rare finding teachers that dont fill their videos with “learn these 5 bebop licks” “how to play joe passchord solos” and dont actually teach anything.
Thank you for your work, liked and subd

Thank you so much! This is an older video, I’ve made many other since then. I hope you enjoy them! Some people want “McDonald’s” answers, and some people want serious lessons like this one. It’s quite hard to please everyone!

About charts: early on I used the Real Book to learn tunes and eventually earned a local reputation for knowing my way around: I got hired for a pickup gig and leader showed me a list of tunes and told me to cross off any tunes I wasn't okay with... Then, he made some announcement and called Stomping at Savoy. Ok, fine! I quickly said to the clarinet guy "Db, right?" And he said "Not sure but I think F"
So I began banging out the rhythm in F but in my mind, the chart went to Gb for the bridge. Being a sharp-centric guy, I had always thought of that as F# but now I'm stuck trying to transpose "if F is to Db then X is to F#: so what is X???" while playing this tune in a slightly unfamiliar key. Never quite got it but managed to hand off the bridge solo to the tuba guy!
    What a mess!
PS: I did actually to get called back for future gigs with those guys so I guess it wasn't terrible (but it was disappointing for me)

BTW, I sat in with a quintet last night, playing electric mandolin (single string) and everything you said in this video came into play and made my contribution much nicer and enjoyable, so thanks for that Denis!

This is what I struggle with! Transposing on the fly is exhausting. I dont play gigs yet but want to prepare for this is as much as possible. Learning patterns on guitar in positions can help, but then its hard to know the Re harmonisations or interchange.
Im only starting and hope im on the right track. The first one I tried was blue bossa last night. My trick is just knowing what order of cadences are in the songs? Eg heres 1-4 in Cmin after that a minor 2 5 1, song then modulates to a major 2-5-1 in Eb
Is it better to learn intervals for songs and modulations?

Can you do a video on your picking technique? It looks like it's based on George Benson's approach. Thanks.

Dennis thanks for posting the video. It helps all kinds of musicians. I'd like to offer a suggestion. Next time we should not have to wait 20 minutes before we get to what the title suggests. Thanks again.

I just recognised the key and learn lyrics on the fly ad lib them on occasion .. good times ☺ once I got of stage people always told me it sounded "natural".. I live in Montreal.. the north american capital of jazz

When a complete beginner at jazz I decided I liked Body and Doul and tried to self teach it using a full-tilt max-complexity jim-hall-on-steroids rubato-ballad-madness chart. I now have PTSD... terror has a name: Body and Soul.

Perhaps the old fellows don't know he names of the tunes! I saw Bireli live (with Vali Mayer and Holzmanno Winterstein) in Heidelberg, Germany and they kinda improvised the whole show. They didn't agree on any setlist. So Bireli started to play and Vali and Holzmanno joined in after Bireli played the first bar. The funny things was, after the played the tune Vali Mayer said that the name of this wonderful tune was Daphne, but in fact, they were playing Them There Eyes. 😂
Back on topic: What helped me memorizing changes a lot better, was transcribing them myself. I remember those tunes a lot better, even when I don't play them regularly. Perhaps the process in figuring out what they play on the recording helps with memorization.
Lastly, thank you Denis for your tremendous efforts. Please keep up the excellent work. Take care and stay healthy.
