- The Gandhi School Choir in Pecs, Hungary singing the Gypsy song Jarba, Mara Jarba while in a recording session for a new CD. The Gandhi School is located in Pecs, Hungary and is a high school for Roma (Gypsy) students from Hungary. Járbǎ màré járbǎ is a Gypsy folk song popular with the Roma people in Hungary. The text/language is Beas (pronounced beh-osh), one of several Gypsy languages found in central Europe. The origin of both the lyrics and the music is unknown. It has been passed down orally from generation to generation.
jó látni egy ilyen iskolai együttest ... föleg a környékröl szóló megdöbbentö hírek után
I teach choir at a small charter school in Utah. Was hesitant at first because most of my kids were inexperienced and only taking choir for the credit. But…I just couldn’t get this melody out of my head! It became my choir’s FAVORITE piece. I was impressed with how quickly they got the lyrics down and they just wanted to sing it all the time.
Thank you for bringing this song to us western teachers!
Thank you for teaching your choir this wonderful Gypsy folk song, and thank you for letting me know about it.
Jarba, mare jarba mas duce a casa, da nu pot ca am jurat,
Jarba, mare jarba mas duce a casa, da nu pot ca am jurat.
Mare jarba, verde jarba nu me pot duce a casa.
Jarba, mare jarba mas duce a casa, da nu pot ca am jurat.
O mers mama de pe sat, O lasat coliba goala,
Infrunzitu, ingurzitu da plina de saracie, da plina de saracie.
Mare jarba, verde jarba nu me pot duce a casa.
Jarba, mare jarba mas duce a casa, da nu pot ca am jurat.
Green grass, tall grass, I would like to go home,
but I cannot, because I have sworn not to.
Tall grass, green grass - oh, that I cannot go home!
My mother has left the village; she left the hut empty,
Adorned with leaves but full of poverty.
Tall grass, green grass - oh, that I cannot go home!
Tall grass, green grass - I would like to go home.
but I cannot, because I have sworn not to.

..Nice to discover and to hear this rare and old Romanian song.. Thank you! It will last forever, as long someone will sing it..anywhere in the world, no matter who and no matter why! But the description of the video is not just. Text/language = Romanian (Latin language origin, the root!)! ”Iarbă, mare iarbă, m-aș duce acasă, dar nu pot că am jurat” ..// "Grass, high grass, I want to go home, but my oath don't let me go.."
hello, do you have the rest of the words? Thanks!

I have a program that allows me to download this as an MP3. I just wanted to purchase a CD to help your school. You should consider post and address so that people like me, who really enjoy this music and the efforts of your students, can help support your music program.
gratùlàlòk nektek

CSATLAKOZOM ÉN IS SZUPER
@ustix1990 Konkrétan ez a dal rajta van a Kanizsa Csillagai Plinzsjé Puju című lemezén.
They are singing in Bayosh dialect, which is archaic Romanian. You can notice some weird pronounciations as well as an alternative spelling for the word "iarbă" in the song title.
Standard romanian, just a bit weird pronontiation, but there is plenty of that.
Bayosh/băieși dialect is a myth :)
Igazi és hamisíthatatlan !!!😍
@andreeadenet HeHeHe, check Indo-European_languages on wikipedia. The roma people language was and is influenced by the language of their neighbours. So, you can hear roma with romanian, hungarian serbo-croatian, russian influences. Funny is to talk to roma people and in the same time trying to guess where they're from.
The lyrics are in Romanian language, not Beos, and it is an old Romanian song, beautifully interpreted here. Romanian is a surprisingly unitary language across the country, regardless of the region; there are no dialects, only few words that are specific to the province (known as "regionalisms"). Thanks for the video, very nice!
+era ce inseamna ingurzita?
+Annamari Albert Hi, Annamari - they mean to say: "O mers mama (or "nana", same thing) pana-n sat, mai, a lasat coliba goala, a lasat coliba goala, ingrijita (not "ingurzita"), impanzita, dar plina de saracie, dar plina de saracie". In english it would translate as: "Mom went to the village and she left the home empty, tidy (ingrijita), decorated/pretty ("impanzita" has multiple meanings, but best in this context comes from the word "panza" or "a impanzi/a acoperi cu panze/a decora", make to look pretty), but impoverished (meaning of "plina de saracie"). I hope this helps, take care.
As you can see, the word "ingrozita" is in the original version and it means "freightened". However, although it is perfectly apprpriate there, it makes no sense in the modified version sung by the choir here. The loose translation of the original lyrics would be: "Grass tall grass, I would return home but I cannot cause I sweared never to go back; tall grass, green grass, I cannot go back home cause I pledged never to. People in the village talk that you left the house empty, freightened, overrun by weeds and impoverished. I would go back, but I took an oath not to. Oh God, do whatever you wish with me, but the flowers in the house are now dried and yellow, black roosters sung and the church bells trembled. Tall grass, green grass, I can't go back home cause I sweared never to." In its original form, it is a sad song about a separated couple and the impossibility of getting back together.
@@era8693 , check "dicționarul de regionalisme" and see what means "îngurzit"!
Beás is Beás. It is old Romanian language, but it is Beás.
I've been looking all over the web for an English translation to this and I'm having trouble finding one. Could someone direct me towards an English translation?

Big debate on what language it is, what does it means, etc. How about closing your eyes and listening to the music...
A big thank you to Mr. Adkins for coming to Pecs and setting this up. The whole world can enjoy it, you have done a marvelous job.
They are singing in Romanian language, not Gypsy. The music is Gipsy ;)
What IS the language pls?

@KrokodilPrinzessin As far as I know the lyrics is somewhat like this: "jarba mare jarba mas duce acasa, dar nu pot, ca am jurat. Mare jarba, verde jarba nu ma pot duce acasa! Refr. O mers mama de pe sat mai a lasat coliba goala ingurzitu, infrunzitu dai plina da sarasie dai plina da sarasie. "

Ez román cigány zene.
Not to be anal, but they say 'járbö', as hungarians can't pronounce the romanian 'ă' sound. :)
Pure Romanian language, just a bit unusual pronunciation :)
