  • Writer-director Charlotte Zwerin's documentary on jazz vocal icon Ella Fitzgerald was originally produced for Public Television's American Masters series. The 1999 film, narrated by Tony Bennett, shocases the "First Lady of Song" through archival footage of early performances and television appearances.

    The King and the queen! A crime that record contracts of the day prevented her from recording with Nat and Frank. All we have are video recordings.

    As I looked at this footage, you really can see and feel she really gave her all to the public. It's about as real as it gets. What a legacy, and what prized a treasure she became. She was at the time the Voice of America! Imagine that for a minute... And the fact that she was a black woman achieving such stature with songs that back then, only pretty white women with blond hair was singing. What irony this must have been at the time. She certainly didn't belong in that category in terms of appearance or race. Bit her spirit and her personality was everything of beauty, especially her music!

    Dear Ella, why did she wear those awful wigs. She was beautiful with her own hair, and her beautiful face and voice, love her always
