    I just ordered one from eBay as that’s the only place I could find this small ring bracket. I was waiting for the R5ii to be announced as I was debating between the R5ii and Z8 but I think the z8 has more features (better articulating screen, back button illumination/night mode etc)

      Ah the Z8 is a fantastic camera, so much camera for the price. The L Bracket is really cool. Enjoy the combo :-)

    I got one of these as soon as I could and agree about its quality. The mounting for the little screwdriver on the bottom is so insecure I leave if off the camera. One person on a forum commented that his disappeared the first time he took the camera out; another has attached a tether to it. As for rotating the camera for panoramas, the camera should not be rotated around the sensor but around the lens nodal point to avoid parallax errors.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      Hi Larry, I have heard a few people complaining about loosing the little screwdriver alright. In all honest, mine has never dropped out and I use it a lot.
      I must just be lucky on that one.
      Thanks for the info on the nodal point, someone else actually educated me on that one.
      You learn something new every day or as a friend of mine once said "there is no point being stupid unless you show it" 🤣
      So thanks for the info and for watching, I appreciate it.

    6.30. I doubt these are nodal point markings. They are more likely the centre line of the sensor. These marks will be further back than the focal plane.
    The focal plane mark (where the front of the sensor is, or gate in the old film days) is marked on the top of the camera with a circle and a line though it.
    The nodal point will be found much further forward than the focal plane mark, somewhere between the lens mount and the end of the lens. This distance will vary depending on the lens and if a zoom, where the zoom is set. A bracket is required, so the camera can be mounted further back from the swivel point of the tripod.
    Best way I have found to find the nodal point, which will remove parallax error (which is what we are trying to do here for panos) is to Put a mark on your house window and then line this up with a distant object.
    Set your camera up on a tripod to swivel on the mark on the smallrig (this marks the centre line of the sensor) and look though the viewfinder and align your mark and distant object.
    Swing your camera left and right on the tripod swivel and you will see the mark and distant object move closer & further apart. This is parallax error.
    Slide the camera bracket back in small increments, so the piviot point of the camera moves further towards the front of the lens and the parallax error will get smaller. When at the nodal point, swinging the camera will not result in the window mark and distant object moving in relation to each other.
    However modern software is so good at stitching, setting the camera so it swivels somewhere in front of the focal plane is good enough. Even when making a tryptic, easier to join all three photos, edit then chop into three.
    The tripod mounting point is normally on the centre line of the sensor (not nodal point or focal plane), which probably why SR mark it on their bracket, as the bracket allows the camera to be mounted anywhere along the AS mount, one needs to know where sensor centre is. Having it marked for portrait orientation is a bonus.

      I stand corrected on that one. I was obviously taught that incorrectly.
      It makes perfect sense the way you describe it now. Not sure why I didn't think of that.
      Thanks for the input and can I just say what you described would make for an incredibly interesting video. If you ever do it please do let me know I would genuinely find that incredibly interesting.
      Also thanks for watching and educating me a little bit more.

    • @wibbley1
      @wibbley1 Рік тому +1

      @@kieranhayesphotography Fully agree with you, that swinging the camera on the centre mark is a good idea, as you demonstrate, otherwise the sensor will move in an arc. With modern stitching software, this should be good enough without the faff of finding the nodal point.
      In the past I been asked to make videos but have neither the voice or face for them 🙂Instead have made some detailed written documentation, including repairing one particular brand of camera.
      Found your videos on the Z8 problem most enlightening, more or less confirming what I thought.
      A number of people have reported their repair slip stating 'plastic parts'
      I wonder, if rather than replacing the actual mount, it is the plastic liner under the mount that is replaced. This is where the curved springs fit, so if they were raised slightly higher in their resting position, they would not foul the lens bayonet. Parts in my camera will be UV marked before sending in, so I will see what parts get changed :o)

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      That could very well be the mod they go with, no doubt they have looked at it well before doing this recall. Very interested to hear what part comes back all shiny and new without any UV marker on it. A plastic shim or liner could very well the solution. Another Jap brand I worked with before would have replaced all 3 tension leaf springs. Either way I am sure it's going to be done right. Do please let me know how you get on...

    Great review Kieran, mine arrived last week and it's fantastic. Two points you didn't mention, first is the side cut-out for the button, now you can easily find it with your finger instead of hunting for it. The second is the other cut-out to let you get your finger open the flip screen for portrait mode. Great attention to detail. I see there's a comment below about the battery door flap potentially breaking off, I think it's sturdy and well designed to last for the life of the bracket, unless you drop the camera.

      Hi Peter, delighted to hear you are happy with your SmallRig L bracket, oh, there are so many things and small points you could keep talking about on it. I actually cut out those pieces from the video because I thought it was getting too long :-) It's the one thing I love about their products, the level of development and feedback they take in is frightening. Most companies if you get back to them about something you don't like they practically ignore you SmallRig want more info on how you would change it. Great sign in a company being so open to ideas and feedback. Just one of the reasons I think I love their products.

    Hi Kieran, Got mine last week, brilliant and very well made, just like the one for my Z7II.
    On a completely and rather annoying subject the Z8 recall! My body is in the recall numbers, to be honest it seems like everyone is.
    I have had no problem at all mounting all my lenses including the F to Z adapter, in fact I find it smoother than my Z7II, why if the potential problem is with the mount is everyone having to send the bodies back for a check. The mount is Stainless steel and surely if all your lenses fit and click into place smoothly that is not going to change. I take it your camera is also included in the recall.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      Hi Douglas, yes it's a beautiful bit of kit alright.
      Tbh I was going to post about the Z8 recall, but I am getting very mixed messages on it. It seems if what I am told is right to be an issue with the latching mechanism.
      Now, has it affected every Z8? Right now, everyone I have spoken to has had theirs recalled and only two people actually had an issue. So it seems there is a defect, and they are possibly just checking and confirming all is well with each one.
      That is going to cost Nikon a nice bit of money sorting all that out.
      I am going to delay sending mine in for a few weeks until the process is streamlined. I worked in a Panasonic service centre for a few years and the first week of an issue was always the worst.
      After that, the processes were perfected, and it all ran smoothly then.
      I have trued loads of lenses and never had an issue. It always seemed to be very positive and as you say nearly better than the Z7ii.
      So it would seem we are ok but better to get it checked at some stage anyway.
      The two people I talked too that had problems all got the lens on but it was a bit tricky by all accounts. Releasing the lens was fine though I am told.
      Out of curiosity did you know what a QD mount was, I am wondering if its just me that didn't know this 😀

      @douglasritchie2836 Рік тому

      @@kieranhayesphotography Hi Kieran, No, never heard of it, I did start proceedings through the Nikon website but it will probably be some time before I get word to send it.
      Annoyingly, Nikon seem to have done away with a UK repair centre, it says the bodies will be going to Europe for checking.
      It must be the spring loaded locking pin that has the potential problem, I cant see a CNC Stainless steel lens mount giving trouble if it is already working fine.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      @douglasritchie2836 ya, the mount even if if it's tolerance is slightly out you would think would either work or not work and also offer a lot more resistance when fitting the lens.
      It nearly has to be in the locking mechanism like I am hearing.
      Only other option is the contact points for the lens connection being out slightly or maybe even a failure there. Might explain why the mechanism jams.
      Seems odd though that that would happen and the latching mechanism would surely be the first thing you would look at.
      I suppose we will find out soon enough.

    Another great video Kieran! You know, I was about to return my Smallrig bracket due to the battery latch not being able to fully open, until I saw your video and just noticed the level mechanism to swing out and allow for easy removal of battery. So, it is a great bracket, especially for the money, and allows for other adapters to fit in there. However, I also bought the Photoclam bracket for the Z8, and it is a bit pricier (List $195). I was able to pick up a refurbished one on B&H for $119 though. I am actually leaning more towards this one, and here is why. The Photoclam comes with a allen wrench style adaption, instead of standard screw head. If I want to add on any adaptor such as peak design strap, etc, the same allen wrench that puts on the plate, also attaches the PD strap. And there is a magnetic hold for the allen wrench which stows away quite nicely. It is a small thing, yes, but something that gives me 1 tool to use, vs the 2 different ones I would use if going with smallrig. But the small rig supports more types of adapters, and costs less. lol, it's a toss up, but my leaning is towards the photoclam ever so slightly. Thanks again Kieran!

    Received my SmallRig bracket a few days ago. There are several differences from the one you were sent by the company: 1: there is no sliding extension of side bracket 2) you have to remove the camera strap lug on the left side and reattach it to the bracket itself 3) the hinged battery door flap is not present at all, there is just a gap in the cage 4) the magnetic key is a little different design, incorporates a small hex key . The last is no big deal, but the first three are huge differences which in my opinion make this L bracket less useful or less sturdy than what you've described. I wonder if you have any contacts at SmallRig who might comment on why the design changes were made?

It seems that the rubber on the L-bracket is slightly too thick, so no matter how much I tighten the mounting screw for the L-bracket, I get some fore/aft flex when I mount it on a tripod. It doesn't seem to impact IQ, especially since the Z8 is electronic shutter only, but it is a bit worrisome.

      Hi Gilbert, in all honesty I have never noticed it. I have used this L bracket a lot and it has been flawless for me.
      I just picked up the camera there now and tried to flex it and there is a very slight bit of movement once a sufficient amount of pressure is applied to it.
      I couldn't see how that would impact image quality though.
      I tried a three legged thing L bracket there now on my D810 and there is also some flex on that. The L Bracket on my Z7ii also has a slight bit of flex.
      The secondary locking pin is certainly killing any serious moment on this bracket, so I am dead happy with it.

    Where did you pick up your SmallRig L Bracket? In the US, both Adorama and BH Photo still list it as being on backorder.

      That's a bit complicated 😀 I am a SmallRig partner and I wanted to buy it but couldn't find it anywhere so I emailed them to ask how I could get one and they sent one out to me for free with no conditions attached. I bought the cage for the Z8 though and I have a load of their products. It's to come into stock very soon though I am told. Really nice bit of kit and amazing value for money.

    Aside from the QD clip, is there another way to attach a Peak Design sling? The QD makes me a bit nervous regarding possible accidental release.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      Hi Gerald, Yes, there is a camera strap bar on the base of the L Bracket and you can of course still use the camera Eyelets to attach your strap. Apologies for the late reply also.

      @geraldseligman Рік тому +1

      @@kieranhayesphotography , thanks very much, Kieran. I'm looking at SmallRig photos and wondering where, exactly, the eyelet would attach to the bracket. It appears to be by the battery compartment. That looks like the weakest point. If so, do you feel that is strong enough to support the weight of the camera as it's jostled while, say, walking?

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      @geraldseligman Hi Gerald, sorry, I possibly should have been clearer in my reply. I still use the original Nikon camera strap Eyelets in their original position on the camera. So the Peak Design Sling wouldn't need to be connected to the L Bracket at all. Which to be fair is handy as if you want to travel light you might let the L bracket behind the odd time.

    Will l bracket be handy with peak design alligned on bracket? I want it more for protection than for gimbal. I heard 2 z8 that had a fall because of anchor fail

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому

      Hi John, there is a solid metal bar anchor point on the base of the bracket for camera slings to be attached to.
      Like you, I have heard of those two events, reassuringly no more have surfaced as of yet. Let's hope it stays that way, too. Enjoy the Z8 👍

      @@kieranhayesphotography I am thinking about buying one you make some really good points! I am just worried about adding bulk to the Z8. I bought a cage for my Z6ll and their well made but makes the camera feel a little bulky. Hey but for 50 US not really a big hit to give one a try. I am good with your accent much better than listening to the stupid shit that comes out of some peoples mouths! 😂

      @CareyP I have had an L Bracket on my last 3 cameras and ya the extra weight is slight issue but when I want to travel light I just pop it off.
      Like now for example I am in Germany and I wanted to travel light so I left the L Bracket at home. The rest of the time I leave it on the camera though.
      For the Z6ii and Z7ii I liked the extra height and weight tbh. I felt it helped to balance the camera a bit more with longer lenses.
      In saying that there were days I hiked up a mountain and thought to myself why is my camera bag weighing 12kgs 🤣🤣🤣

    • @CareyP
      @CareyP Рік тому

      @@kieranhayesphotography It isn’t the weight of them more the feeling bulky but my only experience is with the cage on my Z6ii ! I am going to try the L bracket ! Thanks!

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  Рік тому +1

      @CareyP I have a cage for my Z6ii and it does make it feel bulky but it I think that's down to the added metal on the grip side of the camera. It makes it feel less natural to hold and just that bit wider. The L Bracket doesn't have that thankfully.
      The cage is great for video work though and being able to pop on a proper side handle or follow focus unit or monitor.
      You can just keep buying gear and never stop, that's the problem🤣🤣🤣
