I'm revisiting this song after many years...What I always liked about it is that it features some of THE most forgotten cities of the American west- Amarillo, Gallup, Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino and turns them into almost mythic destinations. You can still get that Route 66 vibe today if you follow the original road.
They were hurt by I-40 which let people drive right past them. Little towns like Shamrock, TX took a huge hit when RT 66 was decommissioned. Thankfully the nostalgia boom that began in the 1990’s has encouraged many people (often foreign visitors) to travel the “Mother Road.” If you own a motorcycle you owe it to yourself to ride it at least once. I especially recommend going East to West.
New Wave was just a general term for all the kind of brand new music you got in the beginning of the 80s, simply because it sounded extremely different than the music from the 70s. What Depeche Mode, Midge Ure, Joy Division (later New Order), Soft Cell, Visage and all the others made there in the beginning of the 80s, is called Synth-pop.
Yeah, we did. Maybe it depended on where you lived. People who were into bands like this were called wavers. The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, etc. People who were into metal, hair rock, etc. were called rockers. Obviously there was quite a bit of overlap. If you build a half pipe in your backyard, your bangs are long and swooped over one eye, you're obsessed with "trucks" and Tony Hawk is your idol, you're a skater. If you have a mohawk and safety pins in your skin ( your friend pierced you) you're punk, if you wear only black and think everyone else is some cookie cutter, zero personality follower, you're goth. Funny memories.
My wife traveled that route to Los Angeles, and left her sister in Gallup New Mexico. She became a social worker, and guided us into, well, many things. I grew up along Route 66, my parents descendants of pioneers of Oregon Trail,
Drove a portion of it in 2019 on the way to Grand Canyon. We stopped in Winslow and Williams. If I ever strike it rich, I'm restoring a '59 Eldorado and will cruise the whole thing.

when my uncle got out of the army at the end of wwii he travelled route 66 all the way from California to Chicago.... he got tired of the road... in those days it went through towns and you had to follow the signage, etc, .,,,,when they go to the VERY END OF THE HIGHWAY... it was almost dead ending into Lake Michigan and there was a big sign: 'THIS IS THE END OF ROUTE 66'.... he nearly died laughing and told that story over and over till he died in 2005
It was the very first cross country highway from Chicago to L.A. It's historic! It came LONG before ALL the modern interstate freeways that criss-cross the U.S.
Mixture of versions (Never Let Me Down, Behind the Wheel and World in my eyes). Either way, Depeche Mode still sounds absolutely great!! It's a shame my generation of 15-20 don't know what real music is like.
all the kids know now is hip hop and rap that mostly sounds like garbage. Funny how as wild as rock and pop was...the artists werent gunning each other down in the streets. Not even the country singers that talked about drinking and guns.

Finally found this version! I heard this over over a decade ago and didn't know who sang it, I picked up Burnout Paradise Remasterd (I never played the original) and found this song in it. Funny thing is I like a lot of Depeche Mode songs to but I didn't know they covered this.
Matthew Wells i played the original burnout paradise where i first heard the beatmaster's mix of this song. I later went to check out the original and its one of my alltime favourite songs now.

That is awesome that a British band talked about one of the best trips in USA. The instrumental is incredible
It's actually a cover of a 1946 American song, but it's one of the better ones!
Hello, It my favorite song of Depeche Mode!!! ¡
Twenty years after the Stones did the same!
Xx
It was a perfect fit with “Behind the Wheel” and their U.S. tour (culminating at the Rose Bowl and the “101” album and tour film).

The distorted guitar gives this a distinct ZZ Top feel. I like this version.
EXACTLY what I thought in the first 3 seconds
because it is they sampled it then changed it
I gues it is Nile Rogers who was playing on it

Bad ass song! Enjoyed it at Dodger Stadium in the 80s and am enjoying now in 2021 yeaaaah buooyyy
I loved that they used elements from the music for Behind the wheel for this, it worked out really well.
I think they just sampled the instrumental minus drums and bass and played it back sped up on one key on their EMAX
