I have tons of plants but I keep African violets in memory of my grandmother who raised me. I always remember an African violet in the kitchen window. I still keep the pot she painted and use it for my African violets. ♥️ Rest in peace mawmaw!🙏
I inherited my Mothers plant that she had for 50 years. she loves the plants, she just can't take care of them. Violets grow and propagate so easily. I give them away to everyone.
If your lower leaves are dying be sure to check your soil level! If your leaves do not sit above the soil with some space underneath the moist soil can rot the leaves even if you aren't overwatering! I learned this the hard way and found that my lower leaves would suddenly die. Onces removed I could see where they had rotted from resting on the moist soil! I haven't seen this tip anywhere so hopefully that will help someone!
@Steve Mar. it was African violet soil in terracotta with drainage. It would dry out fully each week. Not sure how I could have improved that further, violets like to retain a bit of moisture
Let me add a few thoughts to clarify a few points that are not "quite" right: 1. African Violets generally don't prefer temperatures above 80 degrees (F). 2.) Watering from the top of the soil is perfectly acceptable and actually assists with "leaching" the soil of fertilizers/salts that build up over time. The key with water from the top is to use tepid water (minimally room temperature). I like to put mine in the microwave to take the chill off. If you do get water on the leaves, take a paper towel and blot the water off and allow to completely dry before returning to natural light. If you grow under artificial lighting, you can return them immediately. 3.) Any all purpose fertilizer will suffice for violets. I prefer quality fertilizers such as Dyna Gro (1/4 tsp = gallon of water). Use this every time you water. Do not discontinue your fertilizing program in the fall/winter. Violets are heavy feeders and discontinuing a food source will show up in the form of less/smaller blooms and typically a noticeable difference in the size of the foliage. 4.) Repotting - for best results repot your violets into fresh potting mix twice a year. This does not mean you need to pot them up into a larger pot. Most violets do quite well in a 4" pot. If you have a store bought violet in a 4" pot and it's time to repot, simply remove a half inch to an inch of the bottom of the root ball with a sharp knife and loosen/remove some of the existing potting mix around the root ball. Then simply return the plant back to the 4" pot and fill in with fresh potting mix. This process is called "potting down". This is particularly useful when you have removed older/yellowing leaves and a "neck" (bare stem) begins to show. By "potting down" the neck/bare stem roots will begin to grow from it and it will completely rejuvenate itself. 5.) Potting mixes are very important and your point regarding "fluffy" and "light" potting mixes is spot on. Those of us who grow professionally use professional mixes such as Premier Pro-Mix (either their HP or BX formula) or Sunshine #4. And as a reminder, you can find much more information on African Violets from the African Violet Society of America @ avsa.org

I have my mini African violet in a coveted terracotta pot. Will it kill my African violet if I place a glass reservoir underneath the terracotta pot and wick water it that way? I’ve seen a lot of sites advise against it because of reasons that seemed minor to me. But I would like to know if it’ll work or not. Please advise. Thanks in advance 🤗
My African Violet is nearly three years old and measures 15 inches across. It is in nearly constant bloom and I water from the top down. Like one other commenter wrote about I use the microwave for a few seconds to warm up some tap water. I also use a large plastic syringe to get the water directly on the soil and avoid the leaves. As the presenter spoke about, I use weight to gage when it needs water. I also mark on my calendar which day I gave it water last so I know how long it has been. I also use the fertilizer shown in the video. I use it about every fourth watering. It gets indirect natural lighting and then several hours under a grow light. The leaves are strong and broad and the blooms are excellent.
Just watching this video 3 years later. Several of my violets are big across but they're not very "bloomy". They have mostly leaves but not enough pretty flowers. Any recommendations? Thx.
Okay so I feel like you have lots of experience with african violets and I have a question. Are the flowers supposed to turn brown and mushy before they fall? Like ive noticed its even traveling up the stem. The rest of the plant (to my knowledge) looks perfectly healthy but as soon as one of the flowers browns(ussually starting from the center of the bloom and traveling outward) it travels down the stem. Is this normal??😭
My African violet is so easy. All I’ve done since bringing it home is just watering it every few days and keep it by the window. It’s been blooming and growing like crazy. Just hope she survives the winter.
My mother raised African Violets for years and they were always a success. She did not fuss with them. She made sure they were watered and turned but did not treat them any differently than other plants. I bought some yesterday and put them into a wide planter as compared to a deep one. I used the Miracle Grow earth I have here and will see what happens. Sometimes plants don't like to be handled and fondled. My mother lived where the climate is cold a great deal of the time and the window ledges she sat them on where near the panes of glass. If they are too delicate for me, I will get something else.
Great tips, thanks In the early 80s I had some African Violets that were amazing, I didn't do a thing to them and they bloomed endlessly, as time passed and I was not home, I gave them away, now I have spare time and started with a beautiful one, your video kinda refreshed my mind on what to do
Best instructional video ever! You got right to the point and clipped through the pointers, one by one. It doesn't hurt that you're also the cutest creature on the planet! :)
Great video, Laura. I live in an adult community where I've come to be known as somewhat of a plant expert, but I don't know anything about the African violet. One of our residents recently purchased one and it's still in the nursery pot and I need to repot it for her. I'm potting it into a slightly larger terra cotta pot and I don't have access to orchid mix, so I'm using Ferti.lome brand cactus and succulent mix. If the aim is a lightweight mix, this should do the trick. My personal plants consist of: 1. a rather tall 3 "clump" Strelitzia reginae (orange Bird of Paradise) 2. a Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera spp.) 3. acommon jade plant (Crassula ovata) 4. a Traveler's Palm (Ravanala Madagascariensis) 5. an echeveria (Perle Von Nurnberg) and 5. an Agave attenuata (foxtail agave) I got through the mail from a grower in the San Francisco Bay Area. I want to keep up my image and not make any mistakes. Your videos have provided me a lot of good information and advice. Thanks! 😉
She is going above and beyond. I water mine once a week, letting them sit in a tray of fertilized water. I rarely repot them. Mine may not bloom as often, but I don’t have that kind of time!
Just got my mum one off facebook marketplace and it's beautiful, super excited to see her reaction for mother's day. Wanted to know how to help care for it since it's been a few years since my mum's had one(no one around us sells them anymore for some reason..) and this was a good crash course in violet care imo!
I fertilize my babies every couple of weeks, using an all purpose one and water from the bottom as well . Absolutely no water on the leaves and fert with just a little bit and room temperature water. I also let the water sit a few days if it's from the tap. Once I started doing this my violets are growing and flowering all the time. Great tip about keeping them away from the cold windows and / or air conditioning. Thank you everyone for sharing your useful tips as well. Next I'm going to try home propagating. I'll try a leaf in the soil with rooting powder and a leaf in water. Going to see which one works the best for me. I have spent so much money on new plants at the stores when it's so easy to do at home with a plant bulb or lighting systems.
Thank you very much! This video is extremely helpful to me. --Someone just gave me a lovely African violet plant for Mother's Day! Blessings and Cheers! 🙏🌈🌸🌈😊
Mirical grow did wonders for me, specifically indoor potting mix. Also they don't love being dusty, we have two cats and two dogs which generate a lot of dust. From time to time I rinse off the leaves, and dab the crown with a paper towel. Happy plants, no rot. Water thing is kind of a myth. Usually water mine from the top too. Of course it's best to avoid standing water on the leaves, but you have to bear in mind these come from nature. When it rains it falls on the plants...
The African violet pots are self-watering. That means you leave the water in the pot and the plant will self-water. I have several in these pots and make sure there is always water in those pots. My flowers are profuse and the plants are very healthy. I don’t worry about watering them because I use the self-water pots.
I left the water in the self watering pot and my pots got root rot and died. Now...with new african violets that are in regular plastic pots...I put the pots in a bowl that has about two inches of water in it for about an hour, let them absorb the water then take them out of that bowl of water and place them on a saucer and they are doing fine.
My plants weren't blooming much so I tried adding a pinch of old coffee grounds to the water. I always water from the bottom. They took off like crazy! Now they have big healthy looking flowers again!
I’ve had issues growing African Violets in the past, but your tips are clear and nicely short. I would consider trying, again. Thanks to your video. Having grown many varieties of plants, including coleuses, hostas, hibiscuses, nandinas, and even ferns, I am used to breaking up the roots when I transplant them from the store pots, but I sense, that this approach would be detrimental to African Violets. Is it recommended to do nothing to the roots, since “slightly root bound produces flowers?” Should I leave them in the original pot? Thanks for your tips. I should be successful this time.
Thank you sooo much. I think mine are starting to die! I have never had success with African Violets. My neighbors gave me two. I do not want them to reach the same fate!
I do everything you said and my two, names Maxwell and Horatio, are blooming all the time. They take turns. I do water them at the edge of the pot, being careful to keep the leaves dry.
These are actually one of the plants that I have been able to keep alive, healthy AND blooming for at least several yrs. LoL Every other flower/plant just dies on me!!! HaHa
Oh my god, yours is H.U.G.E! I’ve had mine for, what? 1, 2 years? And it hasn’t grown a bit. The leaves fell off and don’t grow back. Thanks for the help!
I'm looking forward to growing these because from what I've seen they're nontoxic to my cats and grow well indoors. My mom says that I might be able to if we get the money
Is it normal for the flowers to die after just purchasing it? I got mine from a grocery store (known to have a strong floral program so its not your typical abused plants...but still a grocery store) and the blooms are dieing after a few days. I moved it closer to the sun (not direct sunlight though). I know some flowering plants will loose their blooms when the type or quality of light changes but will regrow new ones eventually. Not sure if violets are the same. Thanks!
Why are my buds drying up before they open? Are they getting to dry between watering. JUST STARTED TAKING CARE OF THEM SO ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME WILL BE HELPFUL! Just noticed capital letters were on 🤦🏼♀️. You say not to water from top I’ve been very busy so I’ve been doing that this week but I have a special squeeze bottle that I’m sure not to get water 💦 on plant or blooms thank you 😊
Yikes I’m using the wrong soil. That might be why mine aren’t doing as good as they used to :(. Hopefully they’ll do better when repot them in better soil
I made every possible mistake with my violets. Lets see how long they last ( I potted them in a pot without drainage and in normal soil, then I misted some water over them) . They look so cute in their pot though. So I don't want to repot them.
what sort of color of grow light would you prefer for your plants. I had a grow light that produced purple or blue. Is it really important or is it the spectrum of light needed? Thanks
Any tips for sustaining a small African violet that has lost some of its leaves and is not doing well overall? I currently have a very small plant in a tiny clay pot that measures 2 1/2" in diameter. I recently repotted into a *smaller* pot because I think it wasn't root bound enough and was having trouble soaking up moisture from underneath. I have never successfully restored an African violet from such a small plant.
Simmer Heart, you can use a west facing window if you gave a light curtain you can pull across when the hot afternoon sun is beating in your window. Otherwise they will probably burn.
I have my grandmother’s African violets. Two plants. I got them in 1995 and she had them before that. Probably at least 30 years old. My daughter accidentally knocked over the plant stand and they fell and broke. I’m trying desperately to save them, but it’s not looking good. Do you have any advice on how to save these plants??
What kind of violet plant are you holding? I want to purchase one but have no idea where to even start/how. 😅 my friend was supposed to give me a clipping but she moved before I could get one
If you can't water from the top because they "burn" how does the plant get water from rain in nature? I water from the top all the time but put it where it can dry fairly quickly. Constant damp is a killer. In winter when tap water is fairly cold I mix it with hot to keep it tepid as the really cold water splashed on leaves can spot the leaves.
that's a good damn question. Been wondering that myself for ages :D www.nytimes.com/2002/11/03/travel/where-the-wild-african-violets-are.html - I read they grow on riverbeds in East Africa, so maybe not a lot of rain
It boggles the mine that, "plant people", continue with the myth of burning leaves with water. I damp cloth wash my African violets and pat them dry - no standing water and they never complain.
I have a violent that has yellowing and dying leaves, but it's still looking pretty healthy and starting to get several blooms. Should I prune the yellowing leaves or just let it do it's thing?
Hi, I have been watching your videos since I got my first violet, I have so many right now over 35 but one has lighter circles around the leaf and the team. Could you help me pls. Thank you Gloria
Hi Lauren, Thanks for this video I have a 2 year old plant that has bloomed once. This year I repotted it into a self watering bisque pot. It is thriving but I have not fed it, I have ordered the food you recommended, also last year I propagated 2 and one has a flower emerging this week. I cannot find any advice if the bisque self waterers are fine to pot them in (I have paid a fortune for them) I love the ease of using them. If I keep them in it how do I fed then?
I water from under in a draining pot and they always droop. Why? I repotted and mixed the soil with perlite thinking for some reason the plant is sitting in too much water no matter what. I made a homemade plant food and my plant bloomed for the first time in 5 years? But my stems always seem oversaturated, droop them die no matter how little i water. This happens within 24 hours after a watering.
I have a question, I live in salt lake city, where it snows and there's not enough sunlight during the winter. What kind of light do you recommend I get to keep my plant healthy ?

GOOD👍🇯🇵
I’m curious as to how you use your fertilizer if you don’t water from the top of the plant. Thanks
The plant food goes in the water
How about using the double pots for african violets and watering?
Thanks...I will try again.
Thank you, ♥️
Is it normal for the flowers to die after just purchasing it?
You say not to water from top I’ve been very busy so I’ve been doing that this week but I have a special squeeze bottle that I’m sure not to get water 💦 on plant or blooms thank you 😊
some of my flowers died off but the leaves look healthy, do I dead head the flowers, remove the whole stem or just let them go?
Yikes I’m using the wrong soil. That might be why mine aren’t doing as good as they used to :(. Hopefully they’ll do better when repot them in better soil
I made every possible mistake with my violets. Lets see how long they last ( I potted them in a pot without drainage and in normal soil, then I misted some water over them) . They look so cute in their pot though. So I don't want to repot them.
My African Violet leaves got very leggy, should I trim those off? It looks so funny like a spider 😂 otherwise she’s healthy! Thanks
what sort of color of grow light would you prefer for your plants.
Thanks !!!!
Will a west facing window work? I'm a dorm room, so west facing is my only option.
Simmer Heart, you can use a west facing window if you gave a light curtain you can pull across when the hot afternoon sun is beating in your window. Otherwise they will probably burn.
Me: literally just watered my new African violet plant from the top
“Make sure to water from the bottom!”
Welp... 😐
Thank you for this video. Do you happen to have one about propagating an African violet?
Thanks for all of the information. Do you know of any reliable sources to purchase them online?
Hi, I have been watching your videos since I got my first violet, I have so many right now over 35 but one has lighter circles around the leaf and the team. Could you help me pls.
Thank you Gloria
I’ve watered my African violet from the top for years and she is fine. She blooms still and everything
I started with an almost dead violet but he's much much better now edit I only have one African violet do is there a cheaper soil option?
What kind of grow lights. I have one violet and need to know what you can tell me about what kind of grow light!
So treat it the same as I treat my orchids.
Looking online for the beautiful ceramic african violet pot with clay pot insert you have in this video. I can't find any that look this one.
What kind of light do you recommend I get to keep my plant healthy ?
full sprectum bulg and or lamp.
Mine were doing great til I started watering it, now it’s dying
