- On Monday, I transcribed a take six song live in a zoom session for pianists. During this session I showed my members how to find each vocal part in the mix. This video shows the result of what I found.

The legendary Take 6...The worlds best accapella group hands down...listen to those chords they singing...amazing!
Are you kidding?! I'm sitting here crying! I think I love you more because you tried. Take 6 is legit. They waitied 10 years before recording albums. 10 years, bruh! It's like a great shoe. You see it and it's beautiful. It is hand stitched and the soles re priceless. You slip it on and you know it is rare. to hear them sing on record and live is one of a kind and you just made a shoe. No, it is not perfect, but it is so close that I am going to sit down, after I take a nap and learn what you played. it was beautiful and awe inspiring. You make me want to practice after playing for 6 hours in church. I've been up sin 4:00 am this morning!
The FACT that you are able to grab those notes and chords out of this song and put it to piano is amazing! Bro you’re special! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😇😇😇😇😇
This is basically Voice Leading... Any pianist that has a grasp of this concept won't only be skilful but sweet and soulful. Thank you for this ❤❤❤
Yep. The issue is, linear voice leading and broadly speaking, counterpoint, gets seen as something only necessary for the classical music style so it barely gets taught. Very little of it bled into jazz genres that developed a century ago (you'll only find it in jazz orchestrations and band arrangements). Also, the way counterpoint is taught in schools has the reputation of being too boring.
@@musical_lolu4811 you're correct 🙌🙏
It's not basically voice leading; it IS voice leading. This is literally the thing pianists are emulating and referring to when talking about voice leading, hence the name.

Take 6 is still the gold standard in acappella. "A Quiet Place" is still one of my all-time favs, and I'm beyond impressed that after 35 years, they continue to improve this song. You are to be commended on picking it apart! Much props to you, brother. Excellent job!
I’ve always thought about what it would be like to transcribe take 6 on piano so, actually not surprised to see someone with this idea. Couldn’t help but laugh and shake my head at their intricate harmonies.
Your facial reactions to the chords are so priceless cause that's me everytime I'm listening to Take 6. Good work brother
Lol! Yeah man!
Sean my dear brother,I am a Adjunct Professor of Music, has God blessed you with Perfect Pitch? please say YES! Because what you are deconstructing would be a 3rd or 4th year advanced Jazz Harmony Class , Sean my dear brother, is the answer YES ? I am watching you and ready to call the Oscar Peterson back from the Grave to Partner with you , so start the SWOP school of Music (SeanWilsonOscarPeterson) , Sean we should take about us doing a Join Podcast .....after I fast & pray ....because I might need something to COME OUT before I can hear what you sharing so quickly! - Victor
He doesn't. I transcribe note for note but don't have absolute pitch. You just find the notes on the piano, is all.
I play keybass/keys and had my start with vocal groups along with a strong love for intricate, sophisticated jazz harmonies. And Take 6, for a long time was my “secret” weapon in my craft. Obviously, Take 6 isn’t a secret. But in the world of vocal harmony, nobody’s really gonna top their foundational prowess!
Bro your face at the end! Lol 😂 great job!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Bro you are too good🙌🏾 thanks for this tutorial
Thanks so much for the support!!
Why are you so talented… 🎹🎼🎶🎵
This was on their 1st CD in 1989 (i think). Its been my fav over all the years that have passed. It's also a fav of audiophiles like me, who uses the CD to test the sound from high-end Speakers and Components.
*1988, and yeah that album man.... one of my all time favorite
This just tells me that your chord voicing library is large. I'd like a part 2 to this breaking down the chord progressions
First of all, how you’re pulling each note, transcribing it in your mind and playing it out in less than 5 seconds is incredible.
Second, I’ve been listening to Take 6 since I was 10, and I have to say it’s no doubt influenced how i’ve played the piano for the last three decades.
Great video.
Sean Wilson you’re the best brother 🙌🙌
As a Professional Vocal Coach and Music School Founder/Owner, I have always loved listening
to the harmonies of Take 6, Commissioned and the
amazing Clark Sisters since 1988.
Even now, with over 300 concerts under my belt and over three international music tours with some of the best known recording artist, I still am humbled by their equisit mastery of their vocal instruments. Take 6 were my role models as a teenager in the late 80s.
They were and stll are always clean and well polished.
Seeing the guys in concert several times in their early years,
I always felt experienced
a miracle on earth.
Take 6 are some of the greatest singers that ever lived bar none.
I am fourtunate to have met them after a Concert at
Tufts University back in 89.
They are class acts and Grade A
all the way. I salute them with two thumbs up. Way up. 🎉
Take 6, legends forever! Great transcription and analysis. Kudos!
You are absolutely brilliant, Sean. Well done. xo -Mark Dante Troiano
i was just waiting for the first Gbmaj lydian#5 and the correct voicing and i knew the rest will be spot on. i learned the original in D maj in the 90s when i started out . love your work, sean, you are a beast !! your patches and sound and tasteful soulful playing is unmatched
Nice man, thanks!
Take 6 has some nice reharm concepts we can all implement into our playing. Nice video Sean keep up the good work!
Appreciate it man thanks!
I grew up on Acapella especially Quartet Music. So I love harmony. It is amazing to see the creativity that you can create with adding additional parts like Take 6 does. Absolutely love this breakdown.
Oh got it!! Yeah a cappella is it man!!
I would love to hear your final rendition
Words do not suffice to describe this glorious experience. Some things should just be mysterious and then unravelled slowly with a big inner smile. You sure get the mystery and the practical going hand in hand Sean.
So much pleasure to watch how one super Profi reacts to 6 Geniuses. For me to decode them that quick is unbelievable by itself!))
First of all God bless you and your gift. Thank you for sharing. I am a musician and vocalist. My plan is to record this song soon. God has blessed me with new Mac computer as my old one broke. I love acapella music and I am happy I found your channel. I immediately subscribed.
This is incredible 👏
Transcribed it some years back…was so much fun…
I am completely blown away by your transcription my brother. WOW!!
Yeah man, thanks for watching!
Sean!!! What you said at 5:01 in this video was immensely profound. I would spend hours trying to play EXACTLY what I heard and ultimately walked away from a lot of tunes be cause I couldn't.
You helped me alot with that statement. Tanx.
Rich, rich, rich flavors
A lot of times I can hear the chords it’s the clusters that I struggle with!!! I need to shed to this!!!
Sean.... you sir, are the best.
They were my favorite group back then. Remember the blue cassette tape? 😃
Man its such a source of rich harmony and the theory of polyphony can be taught from this! I transcribed it a while back for my boys to sing for an exam which they aced. The examiner was in awe :)
I bet man, yeah this one different from the original, and a half step lower…
@@SeanWilsonPianoYep! The original was a half step higher. When this album first came out in 1988, my dad transcribed it for me, my brother and four other guys to sing, but the other four could never hold their part. So, I sat down at the keys and started plucking out each note. That was the beginning of my piano playing. Absolutely LOVE this song
I can listen to this all day.
Really really crazy stuff. I like the idea of guesstimating it as well.
Glad it was helpful!
This is one of my favorite songs by Take 6 - I like how you were able to break that down. Thank you Dr. Sean Wilson
Doc!! Much appreciated man!
Amazing Sean
Doc!! Much appreciated man!
YOU ARE A FIRE

Thank you very much. I love this Take 6 re-arrangement of Quiet Place. Something new to learn! More power to you, Sean! Greetings from Manila
Your ears have the HolyGhost 🔛🎯all the time.
Thanks for this insight!
yeah man, thanks for watching
Those cords !!!!! 6:21-6:55
Lol, I learnt piano by mistake while trying to transcribe these guys for a group. For me, acapella transcription is critical to having a sensitivity for picking up chords, progressions or textures that work for orchastration. From an arranging/ rearranging perspective, Take 6 always push the envelope with each song... understandable, considering their earlier influences (notably Puerling and Kilby). No note or timbre can be wasted to do this kinda stuff. Beyond that, I'm always greatful for their gift of musical excellence... it's had a spiritual impact on my life.
BRO SICK
Brother Sean thank you for using your incredible God given gift to share what in itself is truly amazing. Lord thank You for Sean's wonderful and inspiring music ministry! In Christ's name, amen.
Appreciate it man!
I always wondered what was going on with the singing being a vocal major I'm still baffled
Yeah the more you know the crazier you realize their harmony is
lolololo....I loved the look on his face at the end segment....what da hell? This wasn't in the original song. The re did this. It's beautiful. I was thrown by it. I never listen to the original anymore.
So happy you're covering take 6, their vocal harmonies are killer!! If you like this stuff then check out Jacob colliers music! He did an awesome vocal jazz arrangement of "I've told every little star" that has incredible harmony. 🙂
Thanks for this transcription…I have seen organists use some of Take 6’s harmonies…A major influence that Take 6 mentioned is a group called Singers Unlimited.
This is awesome as always Sean. I also recently found you decoding Take6 the Star Spangled Banner. Thanks for your teachings; amazing!
Oh my goodness, love those harmonies & the vocal quality. To the moon 🌙 & back 🚀. I’ll have to watch the replay.

Wow, thank you bro!
Such intensifying harmonies ❤
I would really appreciate if you would do a breakdown of I come to you more by Kim Burrell sir…🫡
Enjoyed this. Better for it, for sure, even if I don’t know how.
Thanks so much for the support!!
Sean on the last part Was like damn
it looks like magic
Wow, thank you bro!
Such beautiful harmonies! ❤
Definitely🎉
10 fingers 6 part harmony
Yup!! Look closely though and you’ll notice for most voicings I kept it to no more than 6 notes…
Listened to you again....man, the chords are beautiful. I could put this on loop while driving if you played it through. Please consider it. I'm already burning out their new version as it is....that ending sends chills through me....every time and your teasing with yours...lol
Appreciate it man!! Thanks for watching!
Brilliant !
😂 I like the face you make at the end
You did it bro!!!
Doc! Much appreciated man!
Parabéns

Doc! Much appreciated man!
@5:40 adding this to my bad og changes and progressions!!! 🔥
Yeah those are insane, figured that out the night before
Really amazing chords
Beatiful harmony....
yeah man, thanks for watching
Could you teach how to harmonize voices like this… how to find the placement of the voices in a piano for a choir
Start with 'old school' SATB hymn arrangements, that teaches you basic four-part harmony and voice leading.
The Take 6 guys were 7th day adventists, that's how they came by their style of arranging. They started with those type of hymns and then applied jazz and modern harmony to it with 2 extra voices.
If you're really serious about this, you'll have to be able and ready to read a ton of sheet music of hymns and arrangements.
sean your amazing bro
Doc!! Much appreciated man!

Awesome,
What microphone do you use?
Thanks
Excellent work, really impressed I was on my journey of rediscovering take 6's harmony also and incorporating it into my playing.
What tones are you using by the way?
Keyscape piano
Hi Sean, have you studied it prior to this video recording?
-or is this a real-time mimicking of the voice tones?
I transcribed it Monday live on zoom. Tuesday I reviewed it. Wednesday I recorded
You almost gave up at the end lol. I wouldn't even be made if you cut the video. Take 6 I had the pleasure of seeing April 15th in Miami and MAN, they did NOT disappoint!
I bet man!!
🌈🌠♥!!!!!!!

Anyone know how it would sound if a group sung in drop 2?
What is the name of this sound on your keys? I need it for my midi keyboard
...this version is not bad but the album version is definitely better!!!💯💯💯
Yeah man! Thanks for watching!
Jacob Collier music is great for this too
6:30 - 6:55 those chords🔥😮💨
Bro you gotta turn your likes on, on your videos. It doesn't show how many likes you get, which lowers your views in youtube algorithm. Your videos are dynamite and could be getting even more traction than they already do if you turn them on, just trying to help!
Ohw yes so Amazing..

Yo Sean you did the darn thing bruh! You already know we have the history with these cats! After all these years...I still find myself pressing the rewind button because I heard something new from the same song I've played, listened to, and watched my boys perform even though it's the 1Billionth time. One of their all-time greatest arrangements fr fr! Keep holding it down Sean!
It makes me laugh he struggling to continue from how good take 6 harmonize😂
lol!
