I’m amazed at how unfailingly positive you are. It’s very impressive how you continued to do the right thing with Mary’s old house. You’ve treated her with respect and compassion. It’s clearly not all about the profit with you. I know you’re disappointed with the results of this auction but instead of acting angry or frustrated you put a positive spin on it. I admire your ability to see the upside to everything. You’re definitely one of the good guys. Best wishes to you and your family.

Took my kids to an auction, daughter was 10yrs old, my son was 8yrs old. I gave them a budget of $15/ea. Once while my daughter & I went to restroom, my son sitting alone, bid on a glass dog figurine and won.......oh I was laughing so hard when I found out. He paid $10 and still had $5 for consessions! (He still has the dog and we still love going to auctions & antiquing together) he's 16 now

That's the thing with "local" auctions--many times you don't make the money you expect, because of the small bidding audience. Next time, give us all a head's up before the auction. I have a friend who would almost have promised his first-born child for the Muhammed Ali gloves! Maybe we could help! Glad, though, that you got your 100k, anyway. Thanks for the video!

Agree'd. Time to hire someone to update your website to include any and all up coming auctions and to let us know where we can buy the stuff we see on your channel. I think if you had links there to your ebay sites and online auctions you would get a lot more bids. I would have loved that elephant that you found in the hoarder house. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it in the drawer and I collect NOTHING! Im very picky about what I bring into my home.

Hi Alex, I think you should start thinking about marketing to the world and not just your local area. You have some phenomenal finds and near museum pieces that you have come across. I think those Muhamad Ali and other famous boxing photos would have sold for multiple 100's of dollars in a big sports oriented auction. The United States is mostly picked over by now and I don't think you could find some of these things at the prices you are paying. The quality of items you find in your little corner of Canada is astounding. Apparently there have not been that many people around there doing this sort of thing. You should really think about finding the right international auctions for you higher end finds. That said , I am not an expert though my mothers cousin and her husband have done what American Pickers is doing since the late 60's They are a family of auctioneers living on 30 acres of land in a huge house. They still do local auctions but also spend a lot of time on the internet buying and selling.
Think BIG. Get a marketing plan. Thanks love your videos

Also Europeans bid online and would certainly have paid at least 10 X of these results. Maybe consider giving such big lots to an international Auctioneer near you. You might have to pay them a higher percentage, but doesn't matter with a result of 300.- instead of 30.-. You work so hard, and also help others, so I wish you a lot of luck.

Hey, I know this is totally off topic, but since you're the only person from Alberta I know, I will still target you with this :D So, I just found out that yesterday, the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association have voted in favour of two extremely important resolutions, namely 1. requiring vets to report any neglect or abuse of animals that they become aware of, and 2. (and this is one I'm unbelievably happy about) banning medically unnecessary surgical procedures, including declawing in cats and ear cropping and tail docking in dogs. YAY Alberta, way to go!!! 🎉🌟❤

Shouldn’t they have in mind that a well promoted item will optimised their % results too. It’s a business and in Europe , auctioneers take always the time to reveal few things/info, facts, details, figures, ...something, about the item to make it tempting and though more exciting for the audience/buyers. Besides, happy that u reach ur 10k target Alex 👍🏽 even if it was quit disappointing on few unique pieces who haven’t sold well. Auctions are a lot of fun. If you have a hobby, going to one aimed at that hobby is even more fun. They are a great indicator of how much "things" are actually worth in a certain area, without relying on Ebay sales or other broad venues for comparison.
It's also easy to get caught up in "auction fever" and pay way too much for something. I'm guilty, a few times. LOL.

Despite the availability of online bidding this auction seems too local for your items. I think you need to move on to a bigger better auction for these types of items. Furniture and items with a function seem to do just fine at this auction though. Also you might think about not over saturating the auction with a certain type of item. There's less of a fight over an item because there are other chances to bid for a similar piece. But if you put less similar items they will be bidding more heavily over that one piece they really desire.

    • @pegsbarton6353
      @pegsbarton6353 6 років тому

The downside of limiting how many things 'of a kind' you put in an auction, is that some dealers won't bother to travel to an auction for just a few things. If they are there in person they will be more likely to try for something that is a bit slow starting but at least the interest is there. Some of this memorabilia stuff is very specialised so you need to get a target audience to show up in the first place. You need specialists at a speciality auction or it will just not be sold, or go for peanuts.

As someone who works pt at a local auction house, it can be tough with big collections. Especially with the small houses, as I've noticed that you generally have the same bidders coming week in and week out. Some come for jewelry, some come for toys, some come for dolls, some come for tools, etc. So big collections are so specialized that you almost have to go online to broaden the bidding audience, which is what they did here. Those boxing autographs should DEFINITELY have netted you a bigger return, and that is a shame. They may have done better in a US based auction.
We recently had a huge collection of sports jerseys (football, mostly), and they did ok. Then we had a huge collection of vintage musical instruments, with some vintage violins from the 1800's going for far less than they should have. It always makes me sad when this happens. I feel bad for the seller, as you always hope for high returns on what you prize the most (or your loved ones did). But, as you said, that's the way it goes with auctions.

Alex can you please do a Live stream before you put items up at the auction. Even just a brief live stream would reach a lot people so we could make arrangements to be present for the online bidding in the US.

I agree with Cynthia Swearingen Alex, Why did you not send the Ali boxing glove to an auction house in Amerika`? You have to put items you wanna sell on auctions, to where there are most buyers who have an interest in it. Look for proof how your ice Hockey things went. So better luck next time! :o)

Why not EBAY with a reserve? You would also be able to charge shipping and handling. Most auctions have reserve capacity. find an art auction house for the pottery.

Unfortunately Jack Dempsey in his later years worked as a Wrestling Ref and signed thousands of Autographs to make extra money, so his Auto isn't near as expensive as you'd think, some guys hated signing and theirs are worth a lot more.

Back in those days Boxers didn't make a lot of money, after he retired he went broke, so started working with prowrestling in Chicago, he signed upto 100 Autographs a night during that time.
Created a bit of a glut.

I don’t know how I missed this! I would have bid on so many because my son-in-law is a sports writer, specialising in boxing. He lives in London, UK, and travels frequently to the US to cover boxing matches for various newspapers and boxing magazines. He would have loved some of those.
So yes, please let your fans know in advance so we can bid.

Consider forging some contacts at regional memorabilia shops in the US and either give them first dibs on the American-oriented items or at least a heads up that they will be at auction online and what they need to do to be able to place bids. If they choose not to bid, they might at least consider posting a flyer about the items on auction in their shop. It's very possible you could have made $20k US on that stuff.

I’m from Detroit and I know about 10 guys that would have killed for that Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsey, and Sid Abel autographed photo. Same with the Gordie Howe pucks. Maybe you should have announced this on your Instagram and UA-cam channels, as had I known, I would have bid on those items and re-sold them for twice the auction price and they would have found a good home. I bet the buyers are dealers who are going to re-sell those items at marked up prices.

I think that you would have made much more money in the USA. Even with the cost of shipping to the USA to an auction house here. Muhammad Ali's gloves would have sold for a minimum of $2,000 here in the USA. In the future, think about sending to an auction house here in USA. You definitely had things sell for much less than what you could have here in the USA. I love your channel and I wish you the very best in all your endeavors.

"Hello from Finland, nice autographs collection, unfortunately prices were not as expected. You will most probably see some of them pretty soon on eBay with better selling price, let's see. You are doing good on eBay why you did not put them here this time ? I know also this is less effort with these local auction as you do not have to create listings...but results are not always there. Nice to watch this auction anyway, thank you for sharing with us and better luck next time. Best regards, Pascal"
