You're literally the only band ive ever heard that incorporates chiptune with a hardcore punk sound, which is awesome. i specifically love that lil breakdown like 1:25 in Truckers For Christ, so badass. I'm actually wanting to go back and add some 8bit stuff to my old demos, or re-record them. my 1st lsdj cart got fried and i lost all my tracks, but i recently got a kk_gb_256x16_plcc cartridge from kitch bent that im hoping to write something with.

Hey thanks! I actually got it before they closed. It's making me a little nervous to use it in my design, because if it breaks or has an issue, I'll have to switch to something else. the good news is it should be pretty easy to just make one with a teensyboy or something because it's open source.

Amazing work! I assume LSDJ is going to be driving this. I haven't used link functions with LSDJ. I thought it was only for syncing two Game Boys for playing back LSDJ songs, but I guess you have enough flexibility to run unique midi commands from it? In my mind I'm thinking about how GB Studio could be used with it's hUGEdriver to do something similar.
Yeah it'll be run with LSDJ into an arduinoboy, with a custom fork of trash80's arduinoboy code that only lets me send midi start/stop, tempo, and midi CC commands.
And then the gameboy will be working in tandem with an instance of Reaper that will handle the rest.
Later this evening I'm going to dig into GB Studio since you brought it to my attention with your email. I don't quite understand what it is yet, so I'm curious to see. It's the first time I've heard of it.
Gameboys don’t have sound chips. The audio is generated from the cpu.
Look buddy don't make me bring the knowledge hammer down 👀The audio is processed on the Audio Processing Unit of the Sharp LR35902 (DMG-CPU). While it's technically part of the same SOC as the CPU core and the GPU, it might as well be a separate chip because its functions are fully dedicated to generating audio waveforms. And its specific architecture is what makes the sound unique. It's called a PSG Chip (programmable sound generator).
Saying it doesn't have an audio chip is like saying Intel Iris graphics aren't a GPU just because they're on the same die as the CPU. It's still a separate dedicated GPU device and architecture, it just shares the same die and ram as the CPU. 💣
Surely you can flash the consolizer with new defaults so that you don't have to mess around in the menu every time you boot it.
It's definitely possible. That's what I want to do. The only problem is I need the source code to do that since it's an FPGA. The "firmware" is actually just binary instead of assembly or something, which would make it really hard to try to make changes to myself.
I asked the developers if they'd make me a custom image and they seemed partially open to the idea, so I'll have to bug them again.

Yeah I can do that! Although idk how useful my shapes would be if you're going to do a GBA.
Which portion of the design would you like the stl for? I can share a .step too so it's easier to edit.
@@inhalants I wanted to try it and extend it to accommodate the rectangular gba. I just was looking for that mounting bracket you created with the cart slot off to the side. Also the arduino boy mount. This build is so clean.
.step or .stl is good. I can convert the stl to a .obj to remix
Yeah definitely. Although I'll warn you that I haven't fully tested the stability of connecting a ribbon cable to the motherboard to allow that side-mounted cartridge yet. That'll be in an upcoming video.
Also Catskull, the company that makes that arduinoboy closed recently too which is a bummer, so you might have to adjust the design to house a standard teensy board instead.
But you're right I should probably make this build rectangular and sell it as a standard Gameboy module for a eurorack synth as well. I'll get the stl over to you sometime this week!

should have stuck with the original gameboy board imo. the DMG has a much better audio output than any other gameboy model. low noise, rich sound, and if you use one of the later revisions of the system, the sound is even better as it doesn't make popping noises like the first couple versions did.
gbc on the other hand has very poor sound quality with a lot of high pitched background noise
This is a good point and definitely the general wisdom, but the difference is pretty slight if the proper mods are done to the gbc.
You can bypass the high-pass filter by doing the bass mod to the cgb, and put in a noise filter capacitor to reduce most of the background noise. And then the remaining passive noise is blocked by my noise gate.
The result is pretty damn close to the dmg, but I can run tons of commands without it crashing.

The DMG definitely has a tiny bit of an edge, but this machine is specifically for live use, so it won't matter in that context, and having a color image is a huge perk.
I still record off a DMG in the studio though as long as the song isn't too complicated for it.

Dude, I need help soldering up a male midi jack assembly to a DMG link cable to plug into my Arduinoboy. Its a Xiwi electronics. Anybody here know how to do that? Nobody who I bought it from seems to know
Yeah it's pretty simple. You just have to check the pinouts and match them to what the arduinoboy is looking for.
If I recall correctly it should be somewhere in the Arduino boy documentation. Have you ever made a cable before or is this your first time trying to solder something like that?

I just need to know the 3 pins I need to solder up. I think it's 3. Also I need to buy a link cable and cut it up. How do I wire it up?

@@inhalants somebody on that post gave me a good example with that link. How is it customizable though? I'm still a little lost on how the pins work with the wires and interface. I've heard that when you orger DMG link cables they won't all have the same color coded wires.

This is a really great point. Thanks for bringing that up. I'll have to decide whether to add a reset switch for the arduino itself or just rely on a master reset switch for the whole module.
